Chapter 12
Although Cecily felt strange, she was not allowed to dwell on it for long. A few seconds later, she spoke up, "If that's true, I will stay and treat you for free until you recover."
Darian raised an eyebrow. "You think you can treat me with your mediocre medical skills?"
"I may not be a top-notch doctor, but you still traveled to Dorde Hospital for me, didn't you?" She asked back.
Darian snorted, his eyes narrowing, "Fine, it's a deal."
At that moment, Cecily's phone rang.
Cecily glanced at her phone. Seeing the name on it, she frowned and then stepped aside to answer the call.
A young voice came through the phone, "Mommy, sorry, my watch ran out of battery, so I'm charging it in the room. Are you looking for me, Mommy?"
"Griffin, where are you right now?" Cecily asked anxiously.
"I'm at Uncle Blaise's house. I'm a good boy and I'll stay here waiting for you." Griffin answered.
"Tell your mom, or she'll think I've lost you," Blaise's voice came from the side.
Cecily was surprised. She glanced at Darian, and then lowered her voice and asked, "Griffin, you haven't left Dorde, have you?"
Confused, Griffin wondered why she would ask, 'I'm always well-behaved. Why would I cause trouble for Mom?'
He answered, "No, Mommy, not even a step away. If you can ask Uncle Blaise for it."
Realizing she might have made a mistake, Cecily paused.
She recalled in her heart, 'Aurelie had mentioned that Darian had a son.
'And he was so certain that the child was his and couldn't possibly know her.
'No wonder he was so confident.'
Cecily rubbed her forehead, with a mix of happiness and bitterness in her heart. But she still wondered, 'Was it so crowded that I mistook his child for Griffin? It seemed to be the only plausible explanation.
'Anyway, I've made troubles this time.'
"Alright, I understand. Just stay at Uncle Blaise's, don't wander off, okay?" she told Griffin.
Blaise felt something about Cecily, so he asked with concern, "Is everything okay?"
"I can't explain right now," Cecily answered.
"Then make it brief," Blaise said, not satisfied with her answer.
Cecily sighed, "I mistook someone for Griffin, and I've reported it to the police."
Blaise was at a loss for words.
"Okay, that's it. I'll call you back later." Cecily hung up the phone.
She took a deep breath and turned back to meet Darian's icy gaze.
Just moments ago, she had been so sure of herself. Now, Cecily felt a twinge of guilt.
After some hesitation, she walked back and said to the police, "Sorry, my mistake."
The police looked puzzled. "Ms. Watson, what do you mean?"
Darian's eyes narrowed, suspicion flickering across his face.
Cecily explained to the police over and over again, and only after that did the cops leave.
Then the study was left with a guilty Cecily and a brooding Darian.
Gritting her teeth, Cecily looked at Darian, and said, "Sorry for the disturbance, I'll leave now."
With that, Cecily was about to leave.
But Darian didn't want to let her off, and hurriedly said, "Wait."
The chilling tone in Darian's voice sent shivers down Cecily's spine.
Cecily sighed, "I made a mistake and wronged you. As compensation, I'll try to cure your disease if you need to. I'm leaving now."
With that, Cecily opened the door and ran out immediately.
Darian just looked at the open door, with her words echoing in his mind.
He wondered, 'She had just accused me of taking her child. But after a phone call, she claimed she made a mistake.
'A mistake? What did it mean? Did she not know she had a child with me? If she didn't, then who was the child she was referring to?
'Back then, she had given birth to two children, one with me and the other supposedly dead. However, since Cecily had faked her death, could the other child also be alive?
'The two children should look alike, so she could have mistaken Rowan for the other child, and thought it was me taking the child away. Is it the reason she coming here so urgently?
'But I had made an investigation. She should have been living alone for the past five years. There was no sign of a child, and she had returned to the country alone.'
Darian narrowed his eyes. He doubted that something was amiss, but he couldn't pinpoint what it was.
In any case, something about this just didn't add up.
As he pondered, Rowan was brought over by a servant. He looked at Darian calmly, "Dad, you called for me?"
Darian stared Rowan's face. He was stunned.
Rowan looked at Darian for his response. Seeing him silent, he asked, without any emotion, "Dad?"
"Yes." Darian shifted his gaze. He was struck by how much Rowan looked like him. But Rowan shouldn't be his biological son.
Thinking about this, he rubbed his forehead, feeling a bit confused.
"Dad?" Rowan called out to him again.
Darian sighed, "Nothing. A lunatic just broke in, and now she's gone."
"Okay, then I'll go back," Rowan answered.
Darian watched as Rowan walked away. This boy had become increasingly indifferent to everyone in recent years.
He asked himself, 'I've been pouring my heart and soul into raising Rowan, yet he seems to be pulling away from me. Is it because we are not blood?'
The thought stung in his heart. He mused, 'Blood is thicker than water, after all!
'But if not, why his face grows to resemble mine?'
After much compensation, Darian called for Larkin.
Larkin approached, as formal and upright as ever. "Boss, what can I help you?"
"I want a full background check on Cecily—everything from the last five years, including her associates, events, every single detail. Get back to me with your findings," Darian commanded.
Larkin paused, puzzled by the request to reinvestigate the life of Darian's ex-wife. "Boss, why do you want to investigate Ms. Watson again?"
"No reasons, just go for it," he replied.
Scratching his head, Larkin felt awkward. "Boss, the last investigation has already covered all of her information."
It wasn't that he was unwilling to follow orders, but he couldn't.
Last time, all he could find out was that Cecily had a connection with the renowned Doctor Astrid at Dorde Hospital.
Seems that there was a mysterious and potent force silently protecting Cecily.
Moreover, their power overseas was limited, making it difficult to conduct a thorough investigation there.
Larkin explained all this to Darian.
Darian squinted his eyes, thinking, 'Interesting. Cecily must be hiding something from me.'
"Prepare a paternity test for me," he said suddenly.
"A paternity test?" Larkin was puzzled, asking, "You mean, with Mr. Rowan Fitzgerald?"
"Yes." Darian nodded.
When the results came out, perhaps everything would be clear!
