Chapter 229 Lies to Get Out, Son to Get In.
Owen descended the stairs slowly. "Where are you off to in the dead of night?" he asked.
"Couldn't sleep, so we thought we'd take a walk," Darian replied, his tone casual, devoid of any hint of deceit.
"Couldn't sleep, so you decided to take a walk?" Owen repeated, his voice heavy with skepticism. "And then go find Cecily?"
Owen's face was a mask of indifference. "If Cecily were alive, she would have come back by now." Observing the contrasting expressions on the two children's faces and Darian's, Owen surmised that Cecily must indeed be alive and had returned.
Worry clouded Owen's eyes. Darian pursed his lips, then, in a nonchalant tone, said, "I'm dying."
"What?" Owen's brow furrowed.
"I have a sleep disorder. Declan said I'll die if I don't get treatment soon." Darian's voice was calm and detached as if discussing an everyday occurrence, but his usual demeanor shocked Connon.
Connon even took a step forward, carefully examining Darian's face, noticing the signs of exhaustion. As Connon drew closer, Darian's sunken eyes, hollowed eye sockets, and dark circles became more pronounced.
A terrifying idiom suddenly flashed through Owen's mind, sending shivers down his spine. "Be at death's door!"
Spencer Steele!
Owen's heart raced. "We need to call a doctor!"
"It's no use. If it were, I wouldn't be in this state now," Darian said languidly, his tone too calm, his eyes almost devoid of emotion.
Owen found it difficult to discern if Darian was telling the truth. He knew Darian had a sleep disorder, but he had never imagined it could be so severe, severe enough to be life-threatening. However, looking at Darian's complexion, Owen began to believe it.
Griffin blinked, silently wiping away tears. Rowan glanced at the clever Griffin, her face filled with sadness as she lowered her head.
Seeing this, Owen's doubts were dispelled. Darian suddenly found it somewhat amusing as he led the two children away from the Fitzgerald Family.
Griffin and Rowan breathed a sigh of relief. "It was too dangerous. We almost didn't see Mommy. Daddy's life is really useful."
It was just ten o'clock, and Cecily wasn't feeling sleepy. She took a shower, changed into her pajamas, and settled on the sofa to watch a movie.
The movie was ordinary and somewhat dull, filling Cecily's mind with various thoughts. She wasn't really watching, just listening to the background soundtrack.
The doorbell rang. Cecily snapped out of her reverie and turned her gaze to the door. "Who could it be at this hour?"
Within a few seconds of walking to the door, Cecily already had a hunch. "No one else but Darian," she thought.
She took a quick look through the peephole. Indeed, a handsome man in a black coat stood outside. Cecily turned and made no move to open the door.
"Mommy, we're here," Griffin said, knocking on the door.
Click. Cecily opened the door the next second.
Standing at the door, Darian heard Cecily approaching, then retreating, and finally, the children's voices, so he opened the door. He felt speechless.
"Rowan, Griffin," Cecily's eyes lit up. "Mommy, we're here to sleep with you," Rowan and Griffin immediately rushed into Cecily's embrace.
This unexpected surprise made Cecily very happy, so much so that she ignored the person who had orchestrated it.
Darian realized for the first time how low his presence was. The woman was kissing her son for a long time without even a glance at him.
Lies to get out, children to get in.
"Thank you for bringing them over. Be careful on your way back," Cecily said, holding Rowan and Griffin's hands, smiling at Darian to express her gratitude.
Darian paused, sighed, and said directly, "The car broke down."
"The car broke down, so you don't have to go back," Cecily said, pretending to be confused.
Darian felt puzzled, then saw Cecily take out a car key and patiently explain where her car was parked. "You can go now and just have someone help me bring it back tomorrow."
Darian looked at the car key in her hand and suddenly smiled. "This woman is intentional!"
"How do you think I brought them out?"
"What?" Cecily blinked at him.
"I told him that I would die without you. If I go back now, do you think that stubborn old man will immediately move out of your house?"
Cecily looked at the two children holding her hands. She believed that with Owen's stubborn and domineering personality, he could do it.
"So what Darian meant was that as long as the children were with him, he would go anywhere with them."
Cecily fell silent for a moment.
Darian glanced at Cecily and noticed that her hair was not yet dry, and she was wearing a plain cotton nightgown. Her slender figure looked a bit fragile. "Are you cold?"
The air conditioner was on in the house, but standing at the door, the cold wind kept blowing in.
Darian didn't say much, already taking a step. His tall figure made Cecily involuntarily step back.
Darian, dressed in a gray sweater, black straight pants, and a black coat, looked a bit tired and lazy without his usual formal attire. His tall figure walking towards her made Cecily's delicate body appear even smaller and more fragile.
As the door closed, the movie in the room was nearing its end, the sound gradually quieting down, and the sound of dripping water suddenly became clear and distinct.
Darian frowned slightly at the sound of water coming from the bathroom.
"Cecily, is someone in the house?"
Darian's heart suddenly felt like it was being tugged by a hand. He raised an eyebrow. "Is someone there?"
Cecily was about to answer when the sound of water suddenly stopped as if the person inside had put on a bathrobe and was ready to come out. With a click, the door opened.
Cecily's heart trembled, and she hurriedly rushed over.
Darian looked at her anxious expression, his mood becoming heavier.
"What's the tension? Are you hiding a man?"
Darian followed, curious to see who it was.
Aurelie was still puzzled as to why Cecily had pushed her into the bathroom. In her confusion, she saw Darian standing behind Cecily. "Oh my."
Aurelie quickly slipped into the bathroom.
When Darian saw that it was Aurelie, his expression immediately relaxed. Cecily was already nervous because of Aurelie's reaction, and when she turned around and saw Darian, she was once again taken aback.
"What are you doing?"
Darian didn't answer but instead asked, "Why is she always here?"
Aurelie poked her head out of the bathroom. "No, Cecily and I haven't seen each other for two months. It's not strange for me to come and chat with Cecily. It's your ex-husband who always comes over and ruins Cecily's reputation."
Darian turned his back to the bathroom, his expression dark. "She won't be dating."
"Why?"
"Because she's mine."
"If it were any other man, Aurelie would have retorted with a 'phooey.' But facing Darian, she still remembered the scene where he threw her into the sea. Although it was just a scare for Cecily, he quickly rescued her, but for Aurelie, who couldn't swim, it left a psychological trauma. She was afraid that saying 'phooey' to this person would lead to her being thrown into the sea again."
