Chapter 89 A Lesson in Humanity
The pair got out of the car leisurely and approached Cecily with mocking eyes. "Sorry, it wasn't on purpose. You're not hurt, are you?" they said with a sneer.
"Wasn't on purpose?" Cecily responded emotionlessly, fixing her gaze on them.
They had made it blatantly obvious with their actions—a car speeding toward her on an otherwise orderly street. Had her reflexes been slower, she could have been sent flying by the impact. "What does it take for it to be 'on purpose'? Killing me on the spot?"
Now, with only the three of them present, Elysia and Ophelia abandoned all pretense. Elysia scoffed disdainfully, "So what if you had died? I could easily compensate. A million or two is insignificant; it wouldn't even cover half the cost of a car for me. Besides, we didn't cause your accident, so why are you making a scene? Are you trying to extort money from us? It's hard to believe you've fallen on such difficult times.
"Actually, if you're really looking to extort, why not just roll around on the ground? Maybe I'll take pity on you and give you the money." With a sneer, Elysia exchanged a look with Ophelia, both of their faces showing nothing but disdain.
A human life seemed to be worth nothing more than a couple million of dollars in their eyes. Compared to a car worth nearly ten million, that truly wasn't even half the price of a vehicle.
The chill in Cecily's gaze grew even colder.
"Cecily, start rolling. Maybe if you entertain us enough, we might even toss some money your way," Ophelia said, looking down at Cecily from her perceived higher status in life.
A couple of million was, indeed, a lot of money for the average person. Looking at Cecily's destitute appearance, unable to even afford a car, they figured she might seriously consider rolling a few times for that sum.
The thought of disregarding Cecily made them both unbearably smug.
"Well, what are you waiting for? Roll!" Elysia stepped forward, reaching out to grab Cecily.
Cecily grabbed her hand in return and retorted, "So, a human life is just a trivial matter for you? Something that can be resolved with a million or two?"
"Yes, what about it?" Elysia struggled violently to free her wrist, but could not break from Cecily's grip.
"Cecily, let go of me, you lowlife! Your life is only worth a couple of million, just like your dead mother..." Elysia sneered.
The mention of her mother caused Cecily's pupils to constrict. In a swift motion, she delivered a hard slap to Elysia, her eyes turning icy in an instant. "What about my mother's life being valued at only two million? What about her being deceased? What do you understand?"
"Want to know? I won't tell you." Elysia raised her hand to slap back, but her frail body was no match for Cecily, who caught her hand and pulled her hair.
Cecily had believed her mother's disappearance was an accident, but now it seemed the Watson family might be involved.
A coldness crept into Cecily's heart.
Elysia continued to shriek and struggle, scratching Cecily's arm with her sharp nails. "Cecily, you wretch! What are you trying to do?"
Cecily glanced at the two of them, saying, "Teaching you some manners."
With a quick pull, Cecily knocked Elysia to the ground, holding her by the hair and delivering two more sharp slaps.
Elysia's scream pierced the air. Ophelia, realizing she couldn't overpower Cecily, turned to run.
As Cecily looked up, she caught sight of Ophelia as muttered, "Oh, I almost forgot about you."
Cecily stood up swiftly, closing the distance with Ophelia in quick strides before grabbing her by the hair.
Ophelia, already injured and unable to resist, lost her balance and fell to the ground. Roaring with powerless rage, she exclaimed, "Cecily, you maniac, release me!"
Cecily snatched up Ophelia's collar. "So you two think a life is only worth two million, huh?"
With eyes full of hatred, Ophelia glared at Cecily, her teeth clenched as she retorted spitefully, "Your sorry life isn't even worth two million in my eyes. Giving you two million is charity. I should have been more ruthless back then, should have sent more people to finish you off so you wouldn't be here snarling at me today."
With a loud thud, Cecily slammed Ophelia's head against the side of their million-dollar car.
"Right, you're so wise. Why didn't you do just that? Since you didn't finish me off, you should've expected consequences. Ophelia, the old Cecily you toyed with is gone. Now it's new Cecily’s turn to play," she sneered.
Ophelia felt dazed from the impact, barely cognizant, her ordeal seemingly over until a sharp pain shot up her leg.
"Ah!" She screamed in agony.
Cecily was mercilessly standing on her injured leg, grinding her heel for emphasis. She looked down with a cold gaze, saying, "Didn't I warn you not to mess with me? Cross me once, and I settle the score. Why can't you just listen?"
While speaking, Cecily noticed someone lunging at her from the corner of her eye and swiftly dodged to the side.
Elysia, who had attempted to hit Cecily with a rock, couldn't stop in time, and the fist-sized stone flew from her grasp, striking Ophelia on the nose.
"Ah!" Ophelia felt a sharp pain in her nose, followed closely by the warm flow of blood.
Elysia, hands covering her mouth in disbelief, rushed over to apologize, "Ophelia, it was an accident, I swear."
But Ophelia was too dazed and furious to care, shoving Elysia away, "You're useless, get away from me!"
Cecily's lips curled into a cold smile as she picked up her handbag and pulled out a check, writing two million on it, and tossed it in front of the pair. "Two million should cover your medical expenses, right?"
Ophelia ripped up the check, anger flashing in her eyes. "Cecily, don't you dare try to humiliate me! I'm calling the police and I'll have you arrested!"
Cecily's lips curled into a slight smirk. "Go ahead, call them.”
Pointing to the surveillance camera, Cecily added, "The cameras are right here. They'll show who started this."
Both women were seething, their former bravado now replaced by an embarrassing retreat. Their glares fixed on Cecily like venomous snakes.
In the heat of the moment, Cecily brushed dust off her clothes and calmly rearranged her hair. "If you're asking for it, just say so. I don't mind teaching you a lesson again."
As luck would have it, the car Cecily had called arrived. The two women could only watch in frustration, gnashing their teeth as she climbed in and was driven away.
After Cecily left, a car pulled up beside Elysia and Ophelia. Four men dressed in black stepped out, saying nothing, and dragged both women into the vehicle.
Elysia and Ophelia screamed frantically, but their cries were quickly lost to the wind.
Inside her own ride, Cecily's gaze darkened with thought. Reflecting on Elysia's words, she worried about whether her mother had truly met with misfortune.
She had believed her mother was just missing, but the truth seemed far more grim.
It wasn't hard to suspect the Watson family's involvement.
With her head bowed, Cecily massaged her temple, sadness spreading across her face. She felt a profound sense of injustice for her mother—the Watson family had been built by her mother, and without her, there would be no Watson Corporation.
Regarding her father, he had seized all of her mother's possessions, introduced his mistress and her daughter into the Watson family, and ultimately evicted Cecily from the house.
Setting aside those thoughts momentarily, the idea that Raphael Watson might have been involved in her mother's difficulties was a deeply painful betrayal.
Cecily closed her eyes, a tear slipping down her cheek in spite of her resolve. She feared she might never see her mother again.
In the reflection of the rearview mirror, a pair of sharp eyes watched her quietly.
