Chapter 621: Encountering Evander Again
"I can't even hold a candle to you," Cecily's voice went icy and she turned to the bodyguard. "Keep an eye on them, don't let 'em leave Silver Frost Capital."
"Got it," the bodyguard replied.
"You're crossing the line," Barbara yelled.
"Come find me when you're ready to pay back the money," Cecily said, dragging Aurelie away.
Barbara and her crew shot daggers at their retreating figures, seething with hate but totally helpless, just boiling inside.
"Mom, what do we do now?" Nicole freaked out.
Cecily didn't rough them up like the casino thugs, but from now on, finding a job in Silver Frost Capital was a pipe dream.
She'd promised to make their lives hell in Silver Frost Capital.
In a big city like this, they need cash for everything. No job, no income, no staying put.
Their whole lifestyle was bankrolled by Joshua's gambling. When he won, they splurged; when he lost, Aurelie covered it.
Now Joshua was dead, they were broke, and they didn't even know where their next meal was coming from.
Back home, Cecily had the driver take Aurelie to a private hospital where Nathaniel was recovering.
Just as Cecily got home, she noticed a car parked by the wrought-iron gate. She stopped, squinting to get a better look.
Someone pushed open the car door and stepped out.
The guy was decked out in low-key black clothes, a black baseball cap, and a black mask.
He was all bundled up, but Cecily recognized him right away.
Evander!
First time Cecily had seen Evander since the wedding half a month ago.
She'd called him, but he ghosted her.
Karen had called too, asking her to find Evander.
But no matter how hard they tried, he was MIA.
He'd vanished after the wedding.
And in the past half-month, thanks to Percy's scandal, Lockwood Group's stock had tanked, almost hitting rock bottom.
But luckily, Landon, who had his act together, kept Lockwood Group from going under.
Cecily looked at Evander, biting her lip before speaking, "Where've you been? Your mom's been looking for you."
With the mask on, she couldn't see Evander's face.
He took off the mask and gave a bitter smile.
Cecily felt a stab of sadness.
The once high-flying Evander now looked totally crushed.
"I found a quiet place to chill," Evander said.
He'd found a quiet spot and spent the last half-month in a drunken haze.
Everything before felt like a dream to him.
He wished the dream wouldn't end, that Cecily had really married him.
He also wished the dream would end, so he could wake up and find all the bad stuff was just a nightmare.
But when he sobered up, he realized it was all real.
Everything had changed.
"Have you figured it out?" Cecily asked softly, not daring to speak too loudly. The Evander in front of her seemed too fragile.
For Evander, who'd always been shielded by the Lockwood family, he'd never faced anything like this. Percy being locked up and Lockwood Group on the brink were like tidal waves crashing down on him, each one threatening to drown him.
If he couldn't pull himself together, he'd be done for.
"No," Evander shook his head.
He could never wrap his head around why Percy had to be so ruthless.
Knowing it was wrong, Percy still did it, dragging himself, his family, and the company down with him.
Was money and power really that important? They already had so much, yet he wasn't satisfied and went after things that weren't his.
"My dad's court hearing is tomorrow. You going?" Evander asked.
"No," Cecily didn't want to see Percy, who'd caused her child's death. "His fate's got nothing to do with me. I won't hate you or blame you for it, and it won't change anything."
Cecily meant that no matter what, she wouldn't interfere.
Evander lowered his head, the shadow of his hat brim couldn't hide the bitter smile on his face, "Alright, I just saw you called, so I came to tell you I'm okay. It's getting late, I should go."
Cecily watched as Evander slowly turned around, his back looking so defeated.
Seeing Evander like this made her heart ache.
"Evander," Cecily called out. "What Percy did has nothing to do with you. Don't let this trap you. You've got a long future ahead."
Evander didn't turn around. Cecily only saw him pause for a moment before saying, "Okay."
