Chapter 131 He Had Lost Her

"How come it's you?"

Ophelia, seeing Darian walk in, was first filled with surprise delight. She had expected to wait a long time since Darian was in a meeting, but he had left behind a whole conference room to see her.

Her joy lasted only a second, though, as her happiness quickly faded.

It seemed Darian had mistaken her for someone else.

Ophelia's face rigidly froze for a moment. "It's me, Darian. Who did you think it was?"

Darian frowned, and Larkin, entering behind him, also paused in surprise.

"Miss Ophelia?"

A cool gaze swept over Larkin, and in an instant, he felt a shiver of cold shoot up his spine.

It was supposed to be Cecily. How did it turn into Ophelia?

Larkin turned to his female secretary with a look of you've-done-me-wrong on his face. "Didn't you say Mrs. Fitzgerald was coming? How did it change to Miss Ophelia?"

The secretary felt the terrifying pressure exuding from her big boss and answered with a tremble, "The Mrs. Fitzgerald I mentioned is Miss Ophelia."

Ophelia often visited Darian's place, and since they had announced their engagement, many people, eager to please her, had started calling Ophelia Mrs. Fitzgerald.

Ophelia never contradicted anyone when they addressed her Mrs. Fitzgerald. In fact, she was so delighted by the nickname on several occasions that she gave small gifts in return.

So, naturally, everyone had started to refer to her as Mrs. Fitzgerald.

The secretary looked at Larkin with a blank face, utterly lost.

Larkin, with a near-tearful face, met the big boss's if-looks-could-kill expression, and he almost wished he could take his own life as an apology.

"Darian?" Ophelia's hands were clenched tightly, and the hurt in her heart was about to spill over.

So Darian had hurried over because he thought Cecily was here?

Was Cecily that important to him?

Darian sat down on the couch with a stern face and asked coldly, "What is it?"

Ophelia bit her lip, looking at Darian's expression; she suddenly didn't dare to bring up the matter of cooperation.

"It's... It's nothing." Ophelia forced a smile. "I just missed you and wanted to see you."

Darian was about to get up and leave.

Ophelia, biting back her frustration, quickly called out to him, "Darian, could you sit with me for a cup of coffee? I've just made it, especially for you."

Ophelia looked at Darian with a pitiable expression.

Darian frowned, unsure if his heart had softened, but he stayed.

Ophelia quickly sat down and poured Darian a cup of tea, handing it to him with both hands, "You've often praised the coffee I make for its aroma. Try it."

Darian took it from her, drank it in one go with a stern face, clearly lacking the patience to sit down and quietly savor the tea with her.

"How is it?"

"It's fine." Darian's gaze fell on the bruise on her hand and he casually asked, "What happened to your hand?"

Ophelia withdrew her hand, lowered her eyes and pursed her lips, "I was just with Auntie visiting Miss Cecily. I said something that upset her, so... it's really nothing. It doesn't hurt."

Darian's brow furrowed, his dark eyes filled with displeasure, "Didn't I tell you not to go?"

Ophelia quickly explained, "Darian, we were just worried about Miss Cecily. We went to check on her, didn't do anything else. We left after a short while and didn't disturb her."

Darian's expression did not improve. He poured himself another cup of tea and downed it quickly, then asked, "What did you talk about that made her angry?"

Ophelia bit her lip, "Auntie brought up your divorce..."

Her voice trailed off as she realized Darian's demeanor had suddenly become very dark, his look dangerously stern.

It dawned on Ophelia that ever since the topic of divorcing Cecily came up, Darian had been off-kilter, seemingly quite angry.

Adding to this the fact that he had mentioned calling off their engagement earlier, it seemed possible that Darian did not actually want to divorce Cecily!

The thought made Ophelia's heart race.

"What else was said?" he asked in a somber tone.

Ophelia clenched her fists, tentatively beginning, "Miss Cecily said she wanted to... divorce you, asking Auntie for a billion. She said as long as Auntie gave her the money, she would divorce you immediately."

Darian's face remained the same, but Ophelia felt a cold chill sweep through her.

This confirmed her suspicion; Darian truly did not want to divorce Cecily.

Otherwise, he wouldn't be this angry.

Ophelia felt desolate as she looked at Darian, her lips twisting bitterly.

No wonder he was so assertive about calling off their engagement.

Was she really worth nothing compared to Cecily?

Had he fallen for Cecily?

Why did he value Cecily so much?

Ophelia bit down hard on her back teeth, feeling terrible, but this revelation was undoubtedly a breakthrough for her.

With an expression of heartbreak, Ophelia continued, "Aunt Sandra originally agreed, but then Miss Cecily got greedy, wanting two billion. Aunt Sandra said she was too greedy. I also scolded her a bit, and Miss Cecily got angry, throwing a cup at my hand."

Darian lifted his dark eyes to Ophelia, his gaze narrowing dangerously, causing her hand to tremble.

"Cecily wants two billion?"

"Yes." Ophelia nodded earnestly.

She hoped this would make Darian see Cecily as greedy and start disliking her a bit.

Darian just smirked sarcastically.

Ophelia didn't know what his smile meant, but she felt a chill down her spine.

He was laughing at how effortlessly Ophelia lied.

Perhaps what she said earlier was true because Cecily couldn't wait to divorce him.

However, Cecily was not greedy; she would even give up her billion-dollar settlement, let alone increase her demands.

"Darian, what's wrong?" Ophelia asked.

Darian raised an eyebrow, "It's nothing."

Ophelia stared intently at his face, afraid of missing any expression.

However, even with her constant attention, she couldn't decipher what he was thinking at that moment.

"You can leave now," Darian said coldly.

Confusion crossed Ophelia's face, "Did I... say something wrong?"

"No, I'm just very busy."

With that, Darian stood up.

Ophelia rushed forward anxiously, disregarding everything to grab Darian's hand, “Darian, did I say something wrong that made you angry?”

Even Ophelia, who was usually oblivious to moods, could tell that Darian was upset.

Ophelia was frantic, “Darian, can you please not be mad at me? I’ve been really sad and scared lately, you know I love you, I’m really afraid of losing you. Ever since I was little, my dream was to marry you. I used to think that we would always be together, but when did we start drifting apart?”

“Darian, I promise I won’t cause any more trouble, I’ll be good. Miss Cecily said she wants a divorce, can’t you just divorce her?”

Ophelia wept bitterly and threw herself into Darian's arms, trembling with sobs.

Darian frowned, a hint of scorn in his eyes.

How came Cecily couldn’t learn to be clingy and adoring like Ophelia?

Be good, be obedient and said she loved him.

Why was she always like a hedgehog, always hurting people...

Darian had forgotten that the earlier Cecily had also been compliant and had loved him.

However, he had lost her.

Darian raised his hand and ultimately pushed Ophelia away, “This is between her and me.”

Clearly meaning it was no one else’s business.

Ophelia cried with red eyes, holding on to Darian's hand, “Okay, I understand. I won’t interfere with your business. I was prejudiced against Miss Cecily before, and I was too rash. It won’t happen again.”

Darian's frown deepened, “You should go back.”

Seeing that Darian's voice wasn’t as harsh as before, Ophelia continued pleadingly, “Darian, there’s a party tomorrow night, could you go with me? All my friends will be there with their partners, and I don’t want to be alone. I want you to accompany me, can you?”

Ophelia looked at Darian with red eyes, full of hope.

“Hayden and Declan will probably be there too, along with many old friends. They’d all really like to see you there, Darian…”

Darian tensed his face, which could be taken as an agreement.

"Really? Thank you, Darian." Ophelia wiped away the tears on her face and managed a smile at Darian.

Without lingering, Darian turned and walked out of the office.

Ophelia's face was filled with joy. Darian might not be completely heartless; after all, he hated attending parties but was willing to go with her.

Next, she needed to figure out how to get the two of them to tie the knot quickly.
