Chapter380 Taking Cecily to Find a Man
"Cecily," he murmured softly, his voice devoid of much emotion.
Larkin, seeing the door ajar, knocked but received no response. He then pushed the door open and entered, only to find Darian staring blankly at a spot.
"Mr. Darian?" Larkin tentatively called out to Darian.
Darian's thin lips pressed tightly together. After a few seconds of silence, he asked, "How did I treat her before?"
Larkin was momentarily at a loss for words. After some thought, he replied, "You loved her very much before."
Darian quietly observed him, making Larkin too scared to move, his heart pounding with anxiety.
‘Did I answer incorrectly?’ Larkin thought to himself. He then asked, "Mr. Darian, why are you asking this? Did you remember something?"
Darian shook his head and smiled. He simply couldn't comprehend how deeply he must have loved her back then to give everything to Cecily without reservation.
Thinking back now, he still found it unbelievable. "Why didn't I give her the shares back then?"
Darian sighed to himself. Larkin, thinking he was being asked, replied, "You intended to."
"What?" Darian was surprised.
"But you said you wanted to keep the shares to earn more money for Miss Watson to spend."
Darian raised an eyebrow, a peculiar smile flashing in his eyes. "So, it seems she was really important to me."
His thin lips curved slightly. Suddenly, his world was filled with a former wife who could stir his emotions and their two sons. It was sudden, yet a rather wonderful feeling.
In the room, Cecily was suffering from insomnia. She tossed and turned on the bed, unable to find any sleep.
In her agitation, her thoughts wandered.
At that moment, the phone rang urgently. Cecily picked up her phone and saw it was Aurelie.
Cecily turned over and glanced at the clock.
It was almost one o'clock. Why was Aurelie contacting her so late?
Cecily immediately answered the call. "Aurelie?"
On the other end, there was a cacophony of music. After a while, Cecily heard no response and frowned slightly. "Aurelie, can you hear me? Where are you?"
"Cecily."
Hearing Aurelie's drunken voice, Cecily was momentarily stunned. She threw off the covers and got out of bed. "Are you drunk? Where are you now?"
"Cecily, I'm so sad."
"Don't be sad. Tell me where you are, and I'll come find you." Cecily was a bit anxious, her tone somewhat stern.
Aurelie reluctantly gave her the address. Cecily instructed her to stay put, grabbed a coat, and headed out, ignoring everyone she passed. Cecily went straight downstairs.
Darian saw Cecily leaving but was completely ignored by her as if he were invisible.
He frowned and glanced at the time. It was past one in the morning.
She was going out past midnight!
It was raining outside, and a trace of worry flashed in Darian's eyes, but it was so fleeting that even he didn't catch it.
Half an hour later, in a bar's private room.
The music in the private room was deafening. Under the dazzling lights, Aurelie was lying alone on the sofa, with a row of empty bottles on the table in front of her. For some reason, the floor was littered with broken bottles.
Cecily's smooth brow furrowed as she put down her bag and walked over. "Aurelie?"
Hearing the voice, Aurelie raised her head warily. Seeing it was Cecily through her half-closed eyes, she straightened up and extended her arms. "Cecily, you're here."
Cecily caught Aurelie's limp body. "How much did you drink? And what happened here?"
Listening to Cecily's words, a bitter smile flashed across Aurelie's flushed face. "A few bad guys came by earlier. I chased them away. Cecily, am I amazing?"
Looking at the shattered glass all over the floor, Cecily didn't think Aurelie was talking nonsense at all.
"Cecily, I broke up. What should I do? My heart hurts so much." Aurelie's voice was tinged with sobs. Her chin rested on Cecily's shoulder, and tears began to fall continuously. "Cecily, do you know? I feel like I owe him so much that tonight I didn't even have the courage to question him. I really..."
Aurelie sniffled, choking up to the point of being unable to speak.
Hearing this, Cecily knew that something had gone wrong between her and Nathaniel.
Nathaniel had saved her, and because of her, he had spent ten years in prison. This matter was a constant barrier between them. Aurelie always felt guilty towards Nathaniel, and because of this guilt, she was always humble.
"Alright, stop crying. Let's go home first, and we'll talk there."
"I don't want to go back," Aurelie clutched Cecily's hand.
"I don't want to go back. Can you stay here with me?" she said, reaching for a nearby bottle.
Cecily held her shoulders. "Stop drinking. He can't see it, and he won't feel sorry."
After a long silence, Aurelie broke into a bitter smile. "You're right. He doesn't even want to give me an explanation, so why would he feel sorry? Cecily, thank you."
"Thank you for coming out in the middle of the night to tell me this." Aurelie hugged Cecily, her mouth twitching. "Now I feel even worse."
People were like that; they understood the logic but were still swayed by emotions.
"By the way, coming out so late, won't Mr. Fitzgerald be unhappy?" asked Aurelie.
Cecily's eyes darkened, and she murmured softly, "He won't."
How could he? He had forgotten her, and there was another woman by his side.
He no longer cared about anything related to her, so why would he be unhappy?
"Oh, he lost his memory. He's a scumbag who forgot you after losing his memory. Cecily, let's not care about them! Let's live together. I'll take care of you and your kids, okay?"
Cecily couldn't help but laugh at her. "You take care of me? I'm the one who pays your salary."
"Then you take care of me. I'll have babies for you, a whole bunch, and we'll piss them off!"
Cecily's eyes curved with laughter, and she nodded in agreement. "Alright, you have a whole bunch, and piss them off."
Aurelie grabbed a bottle of red wine and took a swig before Cecily could stop her.
"Don't..." Cecily couldn't stop her in time.
"Don't stop me. It's rare for me to get drunk, okay?"
Cecily looked at her, feeling both like laughing and crying.
Maybe getting drunk really could make one forget a lot of unhappiness.
Cecily found a clean glass and poured herself a bit of red wine.
Aurelie stopped her. "You can't drink."
"Red wine, low alcohol content, a little won't hurt. I'll drink with you. Am I loyal or what?"
Aurelie clapped her hands. "You're loyal! But I'm sorry for dragging you out so late to go crazy with me."
"You're my only good friend. Of course, I'll be here for you."
As it turned out, getting drunk didn't stop bad emotions; it only amplified them.
Cecily hadn't drunk in a long time, and now, after half a glass, her head was spinning. They leaned against each other.
Cecily closed her eyes, listening to Aurelie mumbling in her ear, occasionally responding or laughing.
Time passed without them knowing. Aurelie, in a daze, looked at the sleeping Cecily beside her. Struggling, she picked up her phone, found Darian's number, and called him.
The phone rang several times with no answer.
Aurelie called again.
No answer.
She called once more.
This time, the call was answered.
A familiar indifferent voice came through. Nathaniel said, "What's wrong?"
"Darian, your wife is asleep. Come and take her home. Did you hear me? You scumbag, Cecily has done so much for you, and you forgot her. Aren't you ashamed? Why aren't you saying anything? Are you mute?
"Even if you're mute, you have to come get her. Otherwise, I'll take her to find another man. There are plenty of men in the world. Cecily has no shortage of suitors. I'll take her to find a bunch of men, and they'll have a bunch of kids to piss you off."
On the other end, Nathaniel glanced at the time.
Three in the morning.
Aurelie was out drinking.
Well done!
"Where are you?" he asked.
"None of your business!"
Nathaniel was stunned, thinking she had finally realized she had dialed the wrong number.
Then the drunken voice came through again. "I'm taking Cecily to find another man. She doesn't want you anymore."
The call was disconnected. Nathaniel lay in bed, looking at the time, and laughed in exasperation.
He hadn't intended to get involved, but since his friend's wife was also there, he decided he should.
He got up, grabbed a coat, and headed out while calling Darian.
At that moment, Darian's room was filled with the heavy scent of smoke.
