Chapter 521 Testing
Two soft knocks on the door.
"Come in." Cecily leaned against the hospital bed, looking towards the door.
The door opened.
"Cecily?"
It was Bella and Percy.
Cecily raised an eyebrow slightly. She had already asked Darian to take the children away, and even the bodyguards at the door had temporarily left. So when they came in, Cecily was the only one in the ward.
However, the bodyguards had reported that Josep and Percy would come together. However, Josep was nowhere to be seen at the moment. So, Cecily supposed he must be outside eavesdropping.
Cecily withdrew her gaze, pretending not to know Josep had come. "Mrs. Bella Lockwood? Mr. Percy Lockwood?"
Percy walked into the ward and glanced around; there was no one else in the ward.
Cecily's voice was weak as she tried to sit up. Bella quickly pressed her shoulder. "Just stay there. I heard from Evander that you were injured. Where are you hurt? Is it serious? Are you feeling better?" Bella asked with concern,
Cecily's gaze inadvertently swept over Percy behind her.
"Much better," Cecily said, withdrawing her gaze. "The doctor said I just need to rest."
"That's good to hear. I was so worried when Evander told me you were hurt. What happened? How did it come to this?"
Bella clearly knew nothing, and her concern seemed genuine.
But with Matilda's example, Cecily only believed in such concern to a certain extent.
Cecily silently pressed her lips and lowered her eyes, looking as if she didn't want to recall the events.
Bella noticed the sadness on Cecily's face and didn't want to press further.
Percy, however, continued to ask, "Cecily, what happened? I heard you were shot, and the shooter hasn't been found. Even Evander was taken away by your friend for three days. We've been so worried."
Percy's words were clearly probing to see if Cecily suspected their involvement. He stared at Cecily's face, not relaxing for a moment.
Cecily shook her head, looking somewhat dejected. "We're also investigating the shooter, but we've found nothing yet."
Percy breathed a slight sigh of relief, yet his gaze was still fixed on Cecily.
Cecily continued, "But I'm very grateful that Evander came to save me. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known what to do at the time.
I hope you don't mind my friend taking Evander away; he just wanted to ask about the situation. But I've known Evander for so many years, and I know the person who harmed me has nothing to do with him."
Percy nodded. "Evander has always liked you, and you know that. He couldn't possibly harm you. Your friend was just overthinking.
By the way, I heard Freya was kidnapped with you. How is she?"
Percy deliberately asked this, clearly catching the fleeting sadness on Cecily's face.
There was a moment of oppressive silence.
Cecily lowered her head, her lips trembling uncontrollably.
Bella, being closer to Cecily, was the first to see her tears falling uncontrollably.
Bella placed a warm hand on Cecily's shoulder and quickly asked, "Cecily, what's wrong? Why are you crying?"
Cecily wiped her tears, feeling Percy's gaze firmly on her. She knew he was observing her every move.
Knowing his intentions, Cecily couldn't show any flaws. Her tearful appearance was that of a woman who had been exchanged, abandoned by her lover, and lost her child, breaking down at the mention of her sorrows.
"I'm fine, and I remembered some things and couldn't hold it in. Sorry," Cecily sniffled and then looked up.
Her eyes were red, and she looked exhausted.
Percy couldn't detect any flaws.
After composing herself, Cecily gave a bitter and sarcastic smile. "Darian save her. She should be fine."
Percy's eyes showed understanding, and he sighed, his gaze softening as if he felt sorry for Cecily.
"Don't be too sad. After all, he lost his memory, and Freya is his fiancée. It's just unfortunate for you. I heard from Evander that you lost your child because of this. It's truly tragic."
Hearing this, as if her sorrows were brought up again, Cecily's already red eyes filled with tears once more.
"Alright, don't mention it," Bella said, patting Cecily's back worriedly and scolding Percy.
Percy lowered his head. "I spoke out of turn. Don't mind me."
Cecily pressed her lips. "There's nothing to mind. Whether he lost his memory or not, he made his choice between me and Freya. It's over between us."
Cecily choked slightly when she said "over."
Her red eyes were filled with the resoluteness of someone utterly disappointed, showing no trace of pretense.
Being abandoned at a critical moment, whether due to memory loss or not, was unforgivable in a woman's eyes.
When Percy saw Cecily like this, his last bit of suspicion was dispelled.
Bella gently patted Cecily's hand, her eyes full of pity. "Poor child, things will get better. You need to look forward."
Cecily nodded, "Thank you, I will."
"Have you thought about what to do next?"
Cecily shook her head, speaking bitterly, "I don't know. Maybe after I recover, I'll go back to Detroit with my mom and never return."
"Then it will be hard for me to see you again, Cecily. I'll miss you, but I hope you take care."
Cecily's eyes filled with tears. "I'll miss you too, but there are too many painful memories for me here."
Percy's eyes shifted, and he said, "Mom, you've always hoped Cecily could be your granddaughter-in-law, right? Evander has always liked Cecily. Cecily, the Fitzgerald family hurt you, but that was Darian's lose. Our Lockwood family won't. If you really leave, I'm afraid Evander will wait for you forever. Why not stay and give Evander a chance?"
Percy's words were clear: he wanted Cecily to become his daughter-in-law.
Even Josep, eavesdropping outside, was stunned.
Percy wanted Cecily to marry into the Lockwood family?
Cecily also understood Percy's intentions.
As she and Darian had guessed, Percy had great ambitions.
Cecily looked up, her expression showing some surprise, as if she hadn't expected Percy to bring this up. Then she said bitterly, "Thank you for your kindness, but I'm not worthy of Evander. He deserves a better girl, and I'm not that."
Seeing hope, Percy naturally wouldn't let the opportunity slip. "Cecily, don't say that. Our whole family likes you, and Evander has waited for you for so many years. To him, you are the best girl."
Cecily looked somewhat troubled.
Understanding that Cecily was not currently in a position to provide him with an answer, Percy decided not to push her too forcefully on the matter.
"I know it's difficult for you to agree now, but I hope you'll consider it. Evander has always been waiting for you, and Bella and I hope you two can be together."
Bella looked puzzled at Percy's eagerness to matchmake.
Cecily didn't say much. The less she expressed, the less Percy would suspect. After all, in Percy's eyes, she had just lost her child and given up on Darian. How could she agree to marry Evander so quickly?
With his doubts dispelled and his goal achieved, Percy had no intention of staying longer. He advised Cecily a bit and then left with Bella.
The door to the ward opened, and Josep stood outside with a grim expression.
Percy knew Josep had heard his words. He didn't mind Josep's dark face, smiling as he glanced at Josep. As he approached Josep, he slipped an inconspicuous device into Josep's coat pocket.
No one else noticed, but Cecily did. It was likely a listening device.
