Chapter 263 Distinguishing Truth from Falsehood.
Desmond looked at the two women and said seriously, "The head of the family has only one daughter. One of you must have undergone plastic surgery. We have brought a professional plastic surgeon to verify this. Do you both agree?"
Cecily nodded calmly.
Eliza remained silent.
Cecily narrowed her eyes and glanced at Eliza.
She felt that Eliza must have been prepared for this.
Desmond gestured to the side, and a professional plastic surgeon approached.
"Ladies, please excuse the intrusion."
With that, he put on medical gloves and carefully examined Cecily and Eliza's faces.
He gently touched their features.
After a thorough examination, the plastic surgeon furrowed his brow slightly.
Desmond immediately asked, "What's the result?"
The doctor looked at Eliza and said, "Miss, you have had plastic surgery."
Eliza's expression froze for a moment, and she smiled bitterly, nodding. "Yes, I have had plastic surgery."
The elders all turned their gaze towards Eliza. She pursed her lips, unwilling to mention the past.
Desmond then looked at Cecily and asked the doctor, "And what about this young lady?"
"There are no traces of any facial alterations on this young lady," the doctor reported after a detailed examination.
Desmond's expression changed as he looked at Eliza. One had undergone plastic surgery while the other had not. Obviously, actions spoke louder than words.
A crystal pendant could be stolen, and people could be bribed, but alterations to one's face couldn't be hidden
"Miss, do you have anything else to say?" Desmond asked Eliza sternly, his tone cold.
Eliza lowered her head, her lips trembling, tears welling up in her eyes. Matilda looked at her with pity, patting her back to comfort her.
Cecily, watching this scene, narrowed her beautiful eyes.
It was time to come up with a reasonable explanation for the plastic surgery.
She had come with a surgically altered face, seemingly unafraid of the real Cecily showing up. She must have made thorough preparations.
"I did have plastic surgery. A few years ago, I was in a car accident that severely injured my face. Over the following years, I underwent multiple surgeries to gradually restore my original appearance."
Desmond narrowed his eyes. "A car accident?"
He clearly didn't believe her words. Words could craft all sorts of excuses, and without real evidence, he would not believe.
"Yes, a car accident. If you don't believe me, you can investigate. I still have photos of my completely disfigured face from the accident, which can be obtained from the Watson family, or you could check the hospital records to see if it's true."
Eliza spoke with sincerity, her beautiful eyes filled with tears of sadness.
Cecily just looked at her and sneered inwardly.
Eliza had finished speaking, and now it was time for someone from the Watson family to vouch for her.
The first to speak was Matilda
She held Eliza's hand tightly, a look of sorrow on her face. "Yes, Cecily was in a serious car accident back then, so severe that it almost took her life."
Cecily looked at the pained expression on Matilda's face and couldn't help but let out a cold laugh.
It was a pity she didn't win an Oscar for her performance.
Desmond and the other two elders exchanged glances, unsure of what to believe.
Desmond said, "We will investigate what you've said, but the fact remains you've had surgery and this lady hasn't. She's the one we're looking for."
Before Desmond could say anything else, Eliza interrupted, "Mr.Bradshaw, in this world, there are people who are not related by blood but look exactly the same. How can you determine that she is the real Cecily based solely on this?"
Desmond furrowed his brow. "What you say is true, but the probability of such a situation is extremely low. Almost impossible."
"You said 'almost,' not 'completely' impossible," Eliza retorted loudly.
"This matter concerns the fate of both of us. If you make a judgment based solely on this and mix us up, can you bear that responsibility?" Eliza questioned loudly.
The three elders remained silent.
They knew the gravity of the situation and dared not be careless.
"What you say is indeed possible, but compared to your lies, I believe everyone would rather believe that you are the one lying," Cecily finally spoke up, having been silent until this moment.
In a world with so many people, it was true that there could be two identical individuals without any blood relation, but the probability was extremely low.
Eliza immediately retorted, "If you think I'm lying, you can go and verify."
"You used a disfigured face from a car accident as an excuse for plastic surgery. What's there to verify? Whether the accident itself is true? If you dare to say that, it proves that the accident and plastic surgery are true. But who can prove that you didn't take this opportunity of the accident to surgically alter your face to look like mine?"
Eliza clenched her teeth and chuckled softly. "Do you have any evidence to support your claim?"
"No, it's just a guess."
"A guess?" Eliza sneered, "You're basing your argument on a guess. Don't you find that ridiculous?"
"If you can use probability to argue, why can't I use my guess?" Cecily retorted coldly.
Eliza was speechless and glared at Cecily without saying a word.
Desmond frowned. "Alright, stop arguing."
After some thought, Desmond said, "Please wait a moment, everyone." With that, he led the other two elders away to discuss.
Both Eliza's probability and Cecily's suspicion made sense.
In comparison, Cecily's words seemed more credible.
However, Eliza did have Matilda to testify for her and the crystal pendant in her possession.
The three elders found themselves in a dilemma.
"Let them do a paternity test with Raphael," an elder sighed and suggested. "It's the only way now."
Desmond nodded. "Yes, that's the only option."
Cecily was the daughter of Vivienne and Raphael. Since Vivienne was not present, a paternity test with Raphael would be the same.
Desmond walked out and took a deep breath before addressing the two, "Since you both have your own claims, let's proceed with the paternity test. Raphael, are you okay with that?"
Raphael immediately stood up and said, "You don't believe what my daughter says and still want a paternity test? That's not a problem. However, it is true that my daughter was previously injured in an accident and underwent a long period of plastic surgery to restore her original appearance. As a father, I have already recognized my daughter, and she is the one."
Raphael gestured towards Eliza.
Desmond called the family doctor over and took blood samples from all three.
As the doctor was about to leave, Desmond said, "Nicky, please accompany them and bring back the test results together."
Desmond wanted Nicky to personally oversee the testing at the hospital to prevent any tampering.
"Alright, I'll go with them," Nicky readily agreed.
"Thank you."
Eliza sneered inwardly. The vigilance of the Bennett family was exceptionally high, and it was practically impossible for anyone to tamper with the results.
