Chapter 602: Going to Remarry
"Just spit it out, man," Nathaniel muttered, eyes down, clearly ticked off.
"The casino boss called. You messed up his guys, and he's pissed. He wants the Kensingtons to explain," Terry sneered. "Look at the mess you dragged me into."
Nathaniel didn't flinch. He knew who they were when he acted, so he wasn't scared.
"We're not on the same team. I'll clean up my own mess. Never expected you to help," Nathaniel shot back.
Since that verdict eleven years ago, Nathaniel knew the Kensingtons were unreliable. He was on his own.
Terry, fuming, slammed the table and stood up.
But Nathaniel was already heading upstairs.
Stanley, lounging nearby, chuckled and said to Terry, "Dad, chill. If he wants to handle it, let him. He'll face the fallout."
Stanley was itching for Nathaniel to screw up. Back then, Nathaniel was the only brother who could rival him. His brilliance made them all look like chumps. But now? Now, he was the Kensingtons' black sheep, tangled in messes he couldn't fix.
Stanley could crush him easily now.
Stanley loved it.
The next day.
Cecily called Aurelie and found out she was at the duplex apartment. Cecily brought Griffin and Rowan to see her.
She didn't make it to leave the city yesterday, and Cecily had worried all night.
"What the heck is going on? Why did the Kensingtons detain you?" Cecily asked.
Aurelie told Cecily about Terry's reason for detaining her but left out the debt collectors and her trip to the police station.
"Then come with me now. I'm heading back to Detroit. I think my mom's hiding something, and I need to check it out. You should come with us," Cecily suggested.
"Yeah, come with us to see Grandma. She must miss us," Griffin said, shaking Aurelie's hand, looking hopeful.
Aurelie smiled and pinched Griffin's cheek. But she refused, "No, I'm good here. You go ahead. Say hi to Aunt Vivienne for me."
"Why? Why won't you come with us? You'll be safer," Griffin frowned. They were young but knew enough to sense Aurelie might be in danger alone.
They wanted her to come.
But Aurelie knew she couldn't leave now.
Terry's and the casino's people were already watching her. There might even be someone outside keeping tabs on her. Going with Cecily and the others would only drag them into it.
Besides, she had already pulled Nathaniel into this mess. She couldn't involve them more.
There was no way out now.
"Are you scared of dragging us into this?" Cecily got it and knew what Aurelie was worried about.
Seeing their concerned faces, Aurelie forced a smile, "Don't look at me like that. I'm fine. Aren't you going to Detroit? Go ahead."
Cecily was worried but knew Aurelie was stubborn. Before leaving with Griffin and Rowan, Cecily left a check in a spot Aurelie would find.
She knew the deal. With Joshua dead, the casino people would come after Aurelie and Barbara for money. As long as Aurelie was related to Joshua, she couldn't escape it.
This was all Cecily could do to help. She knew if she gave Aurelie money directly, she'd refuse it, so she left it secretly.
As they left the apartment, Darian was waiting in the car downstairs.
Of course, Darian was going with them back to Detroit.
Once in the car, Darian started the engine and glanced at Cecily, "She's not coming?"
"No, but I left her a check. Do you know anyone at the Fluvoria casino? I think she won't use the money even if I leave it for her," Cecily said, worried.
"No, but I can look into it," Darian replied.
"Okay. Where are we going? Aren't we heading to the airport?" After a while, Cecily noticed they weren't heading to the airport.
"Not yet. It's still early. We have something more important to do first."
"What is that?" Cecily asked.
Darian smiled, clearly in a good mood. "Remarry."
