Chapter 441 You've Always Known
Cecily frowned. "A blood sample? For a paternity test?"
She found it ironic. He didn't believe it before, and now, he wanted a test?
"Mr. Whitaker," Josep's voice cut in, "Freya's really upset. You should check on her."
Bryan's face darkened. "What did you say to her?"
Josep sighed. "Aurelia just wanted to chat, but she spoke without thinking. Freya asked, and she answered honestly. I'll talk to her later."
Bryan clenched his fist, let go of Cecily, and headed towards Freya's room. He then paused and glanced back at Cecily, still frowning.
What was he thinking? Did he really believe Cecily was his daughter?
Bryan found it laughable. Vivienne never wanted his child, and he saw her after the abortion. That child was gone. How could Cecily be his?
Impossible.
He shook off the thought and hurried to Freya's room. She'd just lost her mom. She was alone and seriously hurt. If he didn't care for her, she might not make it.
Seeing Bryan rush off, Cecily lowered her eyes and smiled, not even sure why.
Maybe she was laughing at herself for never deserving a father. Bryan always prioritized Freya over whether Cecily was his daughter.
Josep stood nearby, staring at Cecily.
She sighed. "It's rude to stare, you know."
Josep raised an eyebrow. "Sorry, I got lost in thought."
Cecily eyed him warily. A man who could harm his own brother probably had no humanity left. This was the first time she had been alone with him.
Josep always had a slight smile, seeming kind at first glance. But if you looked closer, you would find his smile was never sincere.
Cecily stayed on guard. "What were you talking about with Bryan? You don't look well."
Cecily shrugged. "Just talking about recent stuff. Seems like I'm always the prime suspect."
"Really? Must be about Jennifer. Heard she was murdered, not a suicide, right?"
Cecily raised an eyebrow. "Didn't expect you to be so informed."
Josep just smiled.
Cecily sighed. "I can't tell if it's bad luck or if someone's framing me."
Josep didn't rush to respond. He smiled and said, "If you hadn't come back after your eyes were healed, none of this would have happened. Sometimes protecting yourself is more important, right?"
Cecily got the hint. "Why didn't you warn me earlier? I'd have taken my kids and left. Who wants to stay here?"
Josep quickly replied, "I didn't know someone was targeting you. Just thought I'd give a friendly reminder. Don't overthink it."
"I was just joking. No need to take it seriously."
"What are you two talking about?" Darian's deep voice interrupted as he approached.
Worried when Cecily didn't return, Darian came looking for her. Standing next to her, he eyed Josep indifferently.
Josep kept his usual kind demeanor. "Look how much Darian cares about you. He came looking for you. Seeing you two reminds me of before Darian lost his memory. Dad was too harsh, using drugs to make Darian forget just to separate you two. It was heartbreaking for me to watch."
Cecily's eyes flashed with surprise, but she kept a faint smile. "Where'd you hear that? Would Owen do such a thing? Let's ask him together."
Josep's face changed slightly. Anyone could see he was trying to stir trouble. If Owen found out, he'd probably beat Josep with a cane.
"I was just joking. No need to ask Dad. You two keep chatting; I have to go."
Not getting what he wanted, Josep left, his smile turning sinister.
Darian frowned, looking at Cecily. "Is what he said true? Did you always know?"
