Chapter 485 Call Off the Engagement
Cecily stayed calm and looked at Darian. "You think a few glances from me will seduce him?" She smirked at Freya. "How insecure are you?"
Her tone was cool and dismissive, which made Freya look even more petty.
Freya clenched her fists and glared. "Do you think it's okay to stare at my fiancé? Have you no shame?"
"So, are you saying anyone who looks at him has no shame?" Aurelie stepped in.
"What else?"
Aurelie glanced at Darian. "I looked at him too. Does that mean I'm seducing him? She looked too. Are we all shameless?"
Aurelie pointed to a girl next to her, who chimed in, "Yeah, I looked at Darian too. My friends did too. Are we all shameless?"
They were at Owen's funeral, and Freya's outburst was uncalled for.
Freya tried to explain, "I..."
"Josep, Darian, can't the Fitzgerald family find a decent daughter-in-law? This woman is causing a scene at a funeral. She has no decorum," an elder said, clearly annoyed.
Everyone saw that Freya was causing trouble, and soon, she was the target of everyone's criticism.
Freya stood there, tears welling up in her eyes.
Josep quickly stepped in. "Sorry, everyone."
"Don't apologize to us. Make her apologize to Owen. This behavior is unacceptable," the elder insisted.
"Yes, of course," Josep said, glaring at Freya.
Freya looked at Darian, panicked. "Darian."
"Had enough?" Darian's voice was cold.
Everyone noticed Darian's cold attitude toward Freya, making them look down on her even more.
Freya lowered her head, feeling wronged. Bryan, who had just arrived, walked over. "Freya, what are you doing now?"
"Dad, I'm not doing anything," Freya said, tears streaming down her face.
Bryan looked at Vivienne and Cecily. Vivienne's eyes were cold. "Control your daughter. Does she know what kind of occasion this is?"
Freya bit her lip and shook her head, feeling wronged.
Bryan pulled Freya aside. He had heard something about Darian's fiancée and Freya's name.
"They're saying you're Darian's fiancée now. Is that true?"
Freya nodded. "Dad, Darian lost his memory. He agreed to marry me. I didn't do anything wrong."
"He lost his memory?" Bryan squinted. "Who arranged this?"
"Josep."
Bryan frowned and grabbed Freya's arm. "Come with me."
"Dad, where are we going?"
"To call off the engagement. Josep is using you. Even if Darian lost his memory, he was Cecily's husband. They have two kids. He doesn't love you. You won't be happy."
"I'm not going. Let go of me." Freya was determined. She had worked hard for this engagement. Why should she call it off?
She wanted to marry Darian and see Cecily suffer.
"Don't you get it? Marrying someone who doesn't love you won't make you happy. Darian may have lost his memory, but he has always loved Cecily in his heart."
Freya yanked her hand away from Bryan. "I'm not calling off the engagement. Whether I'm happy or not is my business. Love can grow. Once I marry him, he'll fall for me."
"You're being foolish!" Bryan snapped.
Freya felt even more wronged. "No matter what you say, I'm not calling it off. My marriage is my own business. Stay out of it."
She wiped her tears and ran off.
"Freya, wait..."
But she was already gone, refusing to listen to Bryan's words.
Bryan's face darkened. The Fitzgerald family was a mess. Darian had lost his memory, and Bryan knew Josep was using Freya by setting up this marriage.
"Your precious daughter, huh?" Vivienne said sarcastically.
Bryan turned to Vivienne and Cecily, looking apologetic. "I'll help her call off the engagement with Darian."
"Don't waste your time," Vivienne said coldly, then walked away with Cecily.
Bryan frowned deeply, his mind racing. He looked for Josep to call off the engagement but found that Josep had just calmed the guests and disappeared.
Meanwhile, Josep and Percy were heading upstairs. Percy, recalling the scene, sneered, "Do you think Darian really lost his memory?"
Josep frowned. "I can't find any flaws with him."
Even when Freya was causing trouble, Darian's expression seemed normal.
"But he did get angry in the end," Percy noted.
Josep felt exasperated as he thought of Freya. "If I had such an embarrassing fiancée, I'd be angry too."
Josep thought it was reasonable for Darian to be upset. Any man would be.
"Cecily is pregnant," Percy said nonchalantly.
"When did this happen?" Josep's eyes narrowed.
"I heard it from someone. Your previous tests on Darian were minor. If you want to know if he really lost his memory, I have an idea."
"What is it?"
Percy leaned in and whispered. Josep's expression changed as he glanced at Percy.
"It's a good plan, but why are you helping me?"
Percy smiled. "I want you to remove the obstacles quickly and take control of the Fitzgerald family. It's good for our business."
Josep sneered. "Your plan is a win-win. It tests Darian, and if he really does it, Cecily will hate him."
Percy continued, "I have my own motives. Evander has always liked Cecily and doesn't want anyone else. I want my son to marry the woman he loves. If Cecily gives up on Darian, that would be great."
Percy's words were only half-true. Josep understood but didn't fully trust him.
Percy had been advising him to get rid of Patrick for over a decade. Josep knew Percy wasn't a good person.
He just didn't know Percy's true motives. No one would help someone else for no reason.
But Percy's idea was good.
After thinking for a moment, Josep asked, "Do you really want Evander to marry Cecily? She's pregnant now."
"What can I do? He's been thinking about her for years. As his father, I can't suppress him. Pregnancy is a small matter; it will be simple to get rid of the child," Percy said lightly.
His true goal wasn't for Evander to spend his life with Cecily. He wanted to use Cecily to marry into the Lockwood family and gain control of the Bennett family.
Moreover, Cecily had Owen's shares. If he helped her get the shares, what belonged to Cecily would belong to the Lockwood family.
Trading a son's marriage for so many benefits was definitely worth it.
