Chapter 558 Wedding Dress
Karen was feeling particularly wary of Lillian now. Just the thought of yesterday sent shivers down her spine. She couldn't shake the fear that if she said the wrong thing, Lillian might snap again.
But there was no way to kick Lillian out, so she forced a smile and said, "I don't mind," while gently pulling Cecily away from Lillian.
"Are you scared of her?" Cecily asked, noticing Karen's obvious attempt to avoid Lillian. She thought, 'After all, aren't they supposed to be family?'
"Don't let her calm demeanor fool you. She nearly came at me with a knife yesterday. I can't afford to provoke her," Karen replied, her voice low and tense.
"Came at you with a knife?" Cecily's eyes widened in surprise.
Karen didn't elaborate further. "Let's just say she's not quite herself these days. It's best to steer clear of her to avoid any trouble. You can't reason with someone who's lost it."
"Aunt Karen, who are you calling crazy?" Lillian's head suddenly popped up from behind Karen, catching them off guard.
Karen gasped, clutching her chest. "Lillian, you scared me half to death!"
"Aunt Karen, what were you two just talking about?" Lillian asked, her face lit up with a bright, sunny smile, as if she hadn't been the one wielding a knife just the day before.
Karen, clearly flustered, stumbled over her words. "Oh, we were just discussing a TV show. There's a character who's a bit... unhinged."
"Is that so?" Lillian replied, her smile unwavering.
Cecily stole a few glances at Lillian. She didn't seem as unstable as Karen had described. In fact, Cecily recalled Aurelie mentioning that Lillian needed a uterus donation since hers had been removed during surgery. If Lillian were truly as unhinged as Karen claimed, it raised the question of what Nathaniel saw in her.
Cecily thought, 'Why would he break things off with Aurelie and ask her to terminate her pregnancy just to be with Lillian?'
Cecily's gaze drifted to Nathaniel, who was lounging in a chair, idly scrolling through his phone. He appeared indifferent, but she sensed an underlying vigilance. The moment she looked his way, his cold, piercing eyes met hers, sending a chill down her spine.
Cecily furrowed her brows, feeling an inexplicable tension between them. There was something about Nathaniel that felt shrouded in mystery; he was far more complex than he let on.
"What's with that look? Are you interested in me?" he suddenly asked, his voice low and teasing.
At his words, both Lillian and Karen turned their attention to Cecily, their expressions curious.
Cecily forced a smile, trying to keep her composure. "Not at all. I just wanted to wish you both well. I hope you have kids soon."
"Cecily!"
Karen's anxiety was palpable. She thought, 'How could Cecily say something like that in front of Lillian?'
Sure enough, Lillian's expression hardened instantly.
"Miss Watson, what exactly do you mean?"
"Can't you understand? I'm just wishing you both the best," Cecily said with a faint smile.
"Are you trying to stand up for Aurelie?"
"No, absolutely not," Cecily replied, her gaze sincere. "I genuinely think you two are a good match, so I'm wishing you well."
Lillian's jaw tightened. She wasn't naive; she could sense the sarcasm in Cecily's tone.
"Well, I wish you and Evander a blissful and childless future too," Lillian retorted with a raised eyebrow, not backing down an inch.
"Hold on, why are you dragging Evander into this?" Karen interjected, clearly upset. "Why's Evander getting attacked out of the blue?"
"Cecily started it, so Aunt Karen, maybe you should go and give your future daughter-in-law a proper talk."
Karen's face darkened.
Just then, the glass door at the entrance was pushed open once more.
The shop staff quickly moved forward. "Sorry, we're closed today."
Darian's gaze was gloomy, his handsome face shrouded in frost. He cast a cold glance at the staff, who fell silent immediately.
Years of navigating the circles of Silver Frost Capital had made these staff sharp-eyed.
It was Darian!
"Closed?" Darian asked coolly.
A single look was enough to make the staff tense up.
Darian strode in confidently, with Larkin pushing Freya in a wheelchair behind him.
Freya, caught off guard, had thought Darian was going to confront her again. Instead, he brought her to the bridal shop, leaving her puzzled about his intentions.
"What a coincidence," Nathaniel remarked, glancing up from his phone. Seeing Darian walk in, he found it intriguing. "Mr. Fitzgerald, bringing your wife to try on wedding dresses?"
Nathaniel gave Freya a disdainful look and chuckled. "Your wife really is delicate, even needing a wheelchair."
Darian shot Nathaniel a cold look. "What are you doing here?"
Nathaniel gestured towards the inside. "You walked in just after they had their argument."
Cecily was absorbed in the argument between Karen and Lillian when she saw the man walk in through the door. Her heart skipped a beat.
She thought, 'Darian!
'He is really here!'
As Cecily glanced at him, Darian happened to look her way too.
Their eyes locked, and Darian raised an eyebrow, his gaze unabashedly lingering on her.
The bright lights illuminated the intensity of his stare, causing Cecily to feel a jolt of surprise. She quickly averted her eyes, her heart racing.
Darian felt a mix of exasperation and amusement; the whole situation felt like a secret affair, and he wasn't sure how they had ended up here.
Nathaniel's eyes flicked between Cecily and Darian, and he smirked knowingly. "What's going on between you two?"
"You wouldn't understand," Darian replied coolly, a hint of annoyance creeping into his tone.
Nathaniel had never been one to pry into others' secrets, and since Darian wasn't inclined to share, he shrugged it off and returned his attention to his phone.
"Take her to try on wedding dresses," Darian instructed the store attendant, who glanced over at Freya.
Freya looked pale, her body wrapped in thick bandages, and she was seated in a wheelchair. The attendant hesitated, unsure how to proceed with the dress fitting.
"Mr. Fitzgerald, are you sure this young lady is fit to try on wedding dresses?" the attendant asked, uncertainty lacing her voice.
"If I say she can, then she can," Darian replied firmly, fixing the attendant with a steady gaze. She blinked, taken aback, and didn't dare argue.
Meanwhile, Karen and Lillian, who were still bickering inside, caught sight of Darian's sudden appearance in the lobby.
Karen froze for a moment, glancing back and forth between Cecily and Darian, before her gaze settled on Freya beside him.
She thought, 'Is Darian here to help Freya pick out a wedding dress too?'
They had publicly announced their engagement not long ago, so Karen wasn't entirely surprised. But the coincidence was hard to ignore—both couples were here to shop for wedding dresses at the same time.
However, when Karen glanced at Lillian and Nathaniel, the oddity of it all seemed to fade into normalcy. After all, this was the largest bridal boutique in Silver Frost Capital; it made sense that everyone would flock to the same place.
Not wanting to dwell on it, Karen took Cecily's arm and led her away from the scene. It was better to avoid confrontation altogether.
Cecily was eager to try on a wedding dress herself, hoping to keep things light and avoid any drama. They made their way to the second floor while leaving the first floor to the others. Guided by the attendant's recommendations, Cecily picked out a dress she liked and followed her into the fitting room.
The process of putting on a wedding dress was quite elaborate, so Karen settled onto a nearby sofa, flipping through a magazine as she waited. Just then, her phone rang.
Karen stood up and walked to a quieter corner to take the call.
