Chapter 653 I Don't Trust Others, But I Trust You

Cecily stopped dead in her tracks and shook her head, "I've got stuff to do, maybe next time."

"What kind of stuff? Need any help?" Giselle asked, eyeing Cecily curiously.

Cecily was always cautious, never one to spill her business to strangers, especially someone like Giselle, who she barely knew. Though they had some kinda blood relation, she wasn't about to get too chummy.

"Thanks, but it's just small stuff." Cecily's cool tone didn't go unnoticed by Giselle, whose face subtly shifted.

Giselle was used to people sucking up to her, and getting turned down wasn't something she experienced often. It bugged her, but she didn't let it show.

"Oh, got it. It's okay, maybe next time. Are you planning to stick around here for a while?" Giselle pressed on.

"Depends, nothing's set in stone," Cecily replied.

Giselle nodded, "Alright then, I won't keep you. Go do your thing."

Giselle was just fishing to see if Cecily had any plans to join the company. Since Cecily wasn't biting, she let it go.

Cecily gave a polite nod and was about to leave with Desmond when a familiar voice called out, "Giselle, Cecily?"

Hunter and Keaen had just come out of a meeting room and walked over. Cecily had to stop again. Her mind wasn't on the company today, and she really didn't feel like dealing with them, so she looked a bit gloomy.

"Cecily, what brings you to the company?" Keaen asked, giving her a once-over.

Cecily didn't fully trust Hunter and Keaen. During her spat with Eliza, they had stayed neutral but had their own share of antics.

"I'm part of the Bennett family too. I think it's fair for me to come to the Bennett family company." Cecily said.

Keaen smiled, no hidden agenda, "Of course, it's fair. It's been a while since we've seen Vivienne around here. We were thinking of visiting her tonight."

"She's not home." Cecily's eyes dimmed a bit, "I'll let you know when she's back in a few days."

Keaen and Hunter exchanged a look. They'd heard Vivienne hadn't been home lately, and no one knew where she was. It was odd.

But since Vivienne had a habit of disappearing and then popping back up, they didn't think too much of it, "Alright, we'll wait till she's back."

"Giselle, what are you doing here?" Hunter asked, turning to Giselle.

Giselle smiled and leaned on Cecily's arm, "I just bumped into Cecily and was chatting with her. It's almost noon, and I wanted to invite her to lunch, but she turned me down."

Hunter grinned at Giselle, "Do you think everyone is as eager as you? This is Cecily's first time meeting you, right?"

"Cecily and I are cousins, so we should naturally be closer. I felt an instant connection with her today." Giselle always played the sweet girl in front of the elders, which is why Hunter had a soft spot for her.

"Cecily, it's almost lunchtime. I've got a table reserved at the restaurant. Join us," Hunter said.

"Yeah, Cecily, come with us. You can handle your stuff after lunch," Giselle added.

With Hunter personally inviting her, Cecily couldn't really say no again. She checked the time and reluctantly agreed.

As they left the company, Cecily and Desmond got into a car. Once inside, Cecily asked the question that had been bugging her, "Desmond, you seem pretty wary of Giselle. Why?"

Desmond thought for a moment before answering, "Giselle is Hunter's only daughter. He's strict with her education but spoils her in every other way, making her pretty self-centered. She doesn't usually care about others. But she's being unusually warm towards you, which is odd. Maybe it's because you're Vivienne's daughter, which makes sense."

Cecily was a bit taken aback by Desmond's words and started to piece things together, "Are you worried she has some hidden agenda?"

Desmond nodded, "You're Vivienne's only daughter, and she's Hunter's only daughter. Even though Hunter's been playing by the rules set by the former head, it's hard to believe he has no ambitions for the company. Giselle is even more ambitious than her father, so you need to be careful."

Hearing Desmond's serious tone, Cecily felt grateful. Desmond was truly loyal to Vivienne.

"Thanks, Desmond. I get it. I'll be careful and try to keep my distance from them outside of company stuff." Cecily smiled.

Desmond's expression remained serious. If Vivienne really wanted to hand the company over to Cecily, it wouldn't be easy. Hunter and Keaen wouldn't just sit back and watch.

Desmond was still worried.

Vivienne was in the late stages of cancer.

And he was getting old. The path for Cecily to become the head of the Bennett family was going to be tough, and he didn't know how much longer he could help her, "Cecily, you have to be extra careful. Don't trust anyone too easily."

"Yeah, I know. I don't trust others, but I trust you." Cecily pursed her lips and gave a perfectly measured smile.

Hearing Cecily's words, Desmond seemed to recall some old memories, and a few more smiles appeared on his aged face, "Vivienne said the same thing when she first took over."

"And you proved you worth trust," Cecily said.

"Unfortunately, I'm old now. If I were twenty years younger, I could stick around a lot longer to help you." Desmond sighed.
