Chapter 75 Cecily Seemed Like... She Was Dead
Listening to Cecily's words, Ophelia's face turned a shade of green with rage.
The onlookers around them buzzed with chatter. They had initially felt sympathy for Ophelia, but after hearing what she had just said, they started to think she was shameless.
It was clear she had recklessly crossed the road and been hit by a car, yet she had the audacity to blame the very person who had reached out to help her.
"You're an adult. Don't you know you can't just jaywalk?" someone remarked. "You think you own the road and can do whatever you please?"
"Exactly. People like her are a hazard to themselves and others. Bet she's looking to milk someone for cash after this."
"Ugh, I hope they're not those scam artists looking for a payout."
"Better stay clear of this mess. People like that are scary..."
Sandra had already fainted, leaving Ophelia alone to withstand the barrage of insults.
Ophelia was frantic. She wanted to escape the crowd that was pointing and whispering about her, but her ankle was twisted, and she was in so much pain she could hardly move. To make matters worse, she had scraped her knee on the pavement, and any movement was agony.
She thought about clutching Sandra and putting on a weepy act of distress, but Cecily stopped her. "Don't you know you shouldn't move an accident victim unless you're a professional medical responder? Do you want to kill her?"
After Cecily spoke, Ophelia's outstretched hand froze mid-air. She gave Cecily a venomous glare and ended up sobbing uncontrollably.
Luckily, the hospital wasn't far, and thanks to Cecily's timely call, the ambulance arrived quickly. Both Ophelia and Sandra were loaded onto the ambulance, and the medical staff, noticing blood on Cecily, asked, "Are you injured as well?"
"No, I just got some on me by accident."
"Do you know these two patients?"
Cecily hesitantly nodded. "I know them."
"Their family should be present. Would you mind coming to the hospital with us? It would make it easier to contact relatives later."
Cecily thought for a moment. She hadn't officially divorced Darian yet, so she was technically still family. Considering Sandra's condition, she agreed to prevent any additional issues for the medical staff.
They arrived at the hospital quickly. Sandra was rushed to the emergency room, while Ophelia was taken to have her leg treated.
Cecily, driven by the maxim that a good deed should be seen through to the end, patiently waited outside the emergency room for news.
However, she really wasn't feeling well that day; she had pushed through at work and was now exhausted, sleepy, and her head was throbbing with discomfort.
In that moment, she could hardly concern herself about the blood staining her clothes. She sat down on a chair, leaned her head against the wall, and closed her eyes to rest for a bit.
Darian rushed from the office to the entrance of the emergency room and caught sight of this scene.
There was Cecily, her body smeared with vivid red blood, her hair disheveled, looking extremely pale as she slumped in the seat, her eyes tightly shut, her hands hanging limp by her sides, appearing as if... she was dead!
Darian's heart clenched as if seized by a forceful grip. Without hesitation, he strode forward and, in his urgency, lifted the woman horizontally in his arms, "Doctor! Doctor! Where is everyone? Can't you see someone has fainted here?"
Darian couldn't hold back his anger. This woman was nearly dying; why was no one helping her? Where were the doctors in this hospital?
Several doctors hurried over at the sound of the commotion, seeing the man anxiously holding the woman, his intense gaze cold and piercing. The doctors shivered under Darian's intimidating presence.
Just when Darian was about to lash out in fury, the woman in his arms stirred.
Cecily had never found herself so speechless as she did today. She had only wanted to rest her eyes momentarily. Was it really necessary to whisk her into the air like that?
She had just been dreaming about stepping into an empty space and appearing to float in mid-air, a dream that had never felt so real.
Upon opening her eyes, the first thing she saw was Darian's handsome and furious face, looking as though he was ready to devour the entire hospital.
Realizing she was in Darian's arms, Cecily's eyes widened as she looked at him, puzzled, "What are you doing?"
Darian heard the voice from the woman in his embrace and knitted his brows, "You're not dead?"
Cecily was almost amused by his outrage. How interesting; she had kindly saved his mother, and the first thing he says upon seeing her eyes open was 'you're not dead?'
Cecily patted his arm, signaling him to put her down, and asked with a cold voice, "Were you hoping I was dead?"
Darian looked at the woman who was nearly jumping back to life, glanced over at Larkin, and Larkin too was staring at Cecily, stammering, "Miss Cecily, are you... alright?"
Cecily's clear eyes twinkled as she looked between the two people and shook her head, "I'm fine!"
Darian narrowed his dark eyes, gazing intently at Larkin.
Larkin had no choice but to look back at Cecily. "Miss Cecily, didn't you say you were in a car accident?"
Cecily paused, "Not me, who told you I was in a car accident? It was Sandra and Ophelia."
Darian's gaze darkened as he frowned at Cecily, "What's the situation now?"
"Your mother was injured more seriously. She's in the emergency room but should be out of danger. Ophelia has lighter injuries and she'll be fine."
Darian asked further, "Why were you all together?"
"Your mom came with Ophelia to see me, hoping I would sign a new divorce settlement, demanding I leave with nothing. I disagreed and was about to leave when Ophelia kept pushing your mom to follow me. They weren't paying attention while crossing the street and got hit."
Cecily relayed the facts as they were.
After she finished, she added, "By the way, the driver who caused the accident is waiting over there. You can negotiate with them about what to do next. I’ve done what I needed to, I'm leaving."
Cecily picked up her purse, ready to leave. At that moment, Ophelia, her leg wrapped in a thick bandage, was brought over in a wheelchair by a nurse. On seeing Cecily, Ophelia's face contorted with loathing, but seeing Darian there, her expression turned pitiful.
Cecily tugged at the corner of her mouth. It would have been a waste if she didn't act.
"Darian..." Ophelia's voice quavered with a sob. She bit her lower lip, tears welling up. "Miss Cecily, where are you going? Aunt is still in a life or death situation. You've caused this to me and her, don't you think you owe us an apology?"
Cecily paused in her steps, turned back to look at Ophelia, and let out a cold laugh, "Apologize? Why should I apologize?"
Aunt Sandra had been angry because of the disrespectful words hurled at her by Cecily. Knowing that Aunt Sandra was chasing after her, Cecily intentionally didn't stop, resulting in both of them standing in the middle of the street, where they were nearly hit by a car. Afterwards, Cecily even took the side of the driver who caused the incident. Despite being knowledgeable in medicine, she did not offer assistance but seemed to watch as Aunt Sandra's life was at risk. "Miss Cecily, you're simply the most malicious woman I've ever encountered," Ophelia declared with righteous indignation, visibly seething with anger.
It was as if Cecily was some unforgivable villain.
A sarcastic smile played on Cecily's lips, "Ophelia, people should have some dignity. Without that, they're unparalleled in the world, aren't they?"
"So you mean to say I should just stand there, take your insults and not defend myself?"
"You two were practically courting death in the middle of the road. Should I have turned back to remind you not to jaywalk? Don't you understand that? Don't you have brains? Pigs?"
"So what if I know medicine? Does that mean I have to save you? While I'm at it, I have to take your insults? Who do you think you are to me? Why should I indulge you?"
Cecily's tone was icy, not giving any ground to Ophelia.
Ophelia's face turned shades of red and white, choking on Cecily's words, "Then Miss Cecily, you think you're in the right? If it wasn't for you angering Aunt Sandra, none of this would have happened— and you even said... you said..."
