Chapter 601: Solving It Together with Her
He switched gears outta nowhere, leaving Aurelie totally blindsided.
'He is getting married.'
Aurelie was caught off guard, not sure how to react. After a beat, she forced a smile and said, "Uh, congrats, I guess."
Nathaniel's face turned stormy. "You really wanna wish me happiness?"
Aurelie kept up the smile, "Shouldn't I? You dig her, right? Marrying her should make you happy, no?"
"Why do you think I'm happy?" Nathaniel stepped closer, eyes flashing with anger. Aurelie's eyes went wide, and she instinctively backed up.
Nathaniel was in a foul mood, radiating the same violent energy as when he had roughed up those guys at home earlier.
Aurelie was so freaked out by his glare that she barely dared to breathe.
Was it really necessary for him to flip out over one sentence?
And what did she even say wrong?
He could announce his engagement to Lillian as soon as she got back, and he even said he'd give her kid to Lillian. They were all lovey-dovey in front of her. Now that he could marry Lillian, shouldn't he be happy? Shouldn't she congratulate him?
Seeing the unease in Aurelie's eyes, Nathaniel closed his eyes, trying to calm down. "Forget it."
He didn't wanna keep talking about it.
Nathaniel said, "You can't stay at your place anymore. From now on, you'll live in the apartment here." He paused and added, "The apartment was bought when we were together, it's yours. Consider it your breakup compensation. Stay there with peace of mind, it's not meant to imprison you."
Aurelie was floored by his words. This duplex apartment was bought for her?
"When's the casino's final deadline?"
With Joshua dead, his debt naturally fell on Aurelie, Barbara, Nicole, and John. The casino folks weren't easy to deal with. Just 'cause Aurelie said the debt wasn't hers to repay didn't mean they'd let her off the hook.
One thing was clear: none of the four of them could dodge this debt tied to Joshua.
And none of them had the means to pay it off.
Today, he had even beaten up the casino guys. Terry was right, he had poked the bear, so things were gonna get messy.
Aurelie shook her head, "They didn't say."
Even though they didn't give a deadline, Aurelie knew she was already on their radar. She couldn't dodge this debt.
If they could come to her once, they could come again. The casino folks must have some serious pull, and no matter where she went, she couldn't escape.
Aurelie's eyes were full of guilt. Nathaniel had thrown down with those casino thugs because of her. They probably wouldn't let it slide. She'd dragged him into this mess.
Thinking back to that scene still gave Aurelie the creeps.
Trying to look chill, Aurelie glanced at Nathaniel, "You should go back and get ready for your wedding. I'll figure out my own mess."
Nathaniel chuckled, like it was the funniest thing he'd heard all day. "You? Yeah, right." He shook his head but didn't push it.
He'd gone after the casino guys because of Aurelie. Now they were both on the casino's hit list, so they were in this together.
Thinking like that, Nathaniel felt a bit better.
At least she wouldn't have to face this alone.
This wouldn't have happened if he hadn't lent Joshua 16 million dollars back then. Now it was on him to help her sort it out.
Nathaniel's eyes darkened, "Go upstairs. Stay here for the next few days and don't go out. The housekeeper will handle your meals, and there'll be people outside to keep you safe. Just stay put, got it?"
"Even if I stay in, they'll find me. I can't dodge this." Aurelie knew the score.
"Trust me," Nathaniel said.
Aurelie's eyes wavered. "You're not planning to pay off my debt, are you? No way, if you do, I can't pay you back. Not you, not even Cecily. I can't let anyone else pay this debt because I can't repay them."
This whole thing was a dead end. She had no cash to pay the casino and couldn't accept help because she couldn't pay it back. She couldn't let Nathaniel or Cecily take the hit.
"Who said I was gonna pay it off?" Nathaniel chuckled. "Two hundred million dollars, I can't swing that either."
"Then what's your plan?" Aurelie was confused, her eyes full of worry, not knowing what Nathaniel had up his sleeve.
"Don't ask too much. Go upstairs." Nathaniel smiled. Aurelie wanted to say more, but the guys who'd been tailing them in the car didn't give them any more time.
They got out and cut in, "Mr. Kensington, it's time to head back. Don't make this hard for us."
Nathaniel shot them a look, signaled Aurelie to head inside, and then turned to leave.
Nathaniel went back to the Kensington family home.
Terry was still chilling in the living room waiting for him, and Stanley was there too, ready to watch the drama unfold.
Seeing Nathaniel come back, Stanley couldn't help but snark, "You really managed to piss off someone from Fluvoria Casino over a chick? That's quite the achievement."
