Chapter 161 An Eye for an Eye
Under Darian's gloomy gaze, he instinctively looked back at Cecily, and their eyes met in the air.
Darian squinted and tilted his head, "Do you believe it?"
Cecily stood silently, her gaze shifting from Darian to the assassins, "I don't believe it, but what they said is true."
These assassins were finally telling the truth.
Obviously, these assassins were just following orders. They didn't know Darian, let alone have seen him in person.
Now, they claimed that Darian had paid them to do this, clearly indicating that the real culprit maliciously made them say so.
Sending the child to Fitzgerald's Family was meant to discredit Darian, so Cecily was not surprised by their claims.
Darian let out a cold smile and stared at the man, saying, "I am Darian."
"What?" The assassin was shocked and clearly couldn't believe it.
Cecily withdrew her gaze, no longer hopeful about these assassins.
There was no way to get the answers from them.
Their superiors hadn't given them the true situation, and all they knew was this much.
If they were ordinary people, they could at least trace the money that was paid to them.
However, these organized assassins had their money sent to the organization's accounts, and they would receive their share only after completing the mission.
Therefore, there was nothing to find on them, and Cecily didn't want to waste her efforts.
"Mr. Larkin," Cecily called out to Larkin.
Larkin quickly responded, "Yes?"
Cecily's calm and terrifying demeanor now was a stark contrast to the fragile Cecily who cried in front of the emergency room. Her current calmness and constant analysis, even though their child was still in the ICU and could leave them at any moment, proved her strength.
"Just now, you mentioned Anais. Where is she?"
"She is still at Fitzgerald's Family."
"I want to go and ask her," Cecily looked at Darian.
Darian nodded without changing his expression.
...
Anais had been working at Fitzgerald's Family for over thirty years. She used to take care of Owen, Darian's grandpa, and later looked after Sandra and Patrick Fitzgerald. Having watched Darian grow up, she held a certain status in Fitzgerald's Family. Otherwise, Sandra wouldn't trust her so much and let her clean Patrick's study after his death.
Therefore, even though she was under heavy suspicion, without any orders from the owners, no one dared to lay a finger on her. She sat on the chair, unharmed and calm.
When Anais saw Darian and Cecily approaching, there was no surprise in her expression. It was as if she knew they would come. She stood up calmly and respectfully greeted Darian with a bow, "Mr. Fitzgerald."
"Hmm."
Anais glanced at Cecily with cold eyes full of hatred.
Cecily's gaze was also fixed on her, and she was momentarily unable to understand why this servant had such great hatred toward her.
Darian narrowed his eyes and glanced at Cecily and Anais. He reached out and held Cecily's hand, personally pulling her to sit down.
Cecily glanced at Darian.
Anais's gaze fell on Darian, holding Cecily's hand. She lowered her eyes and suddenly understood Darian's intention.
But her attitude toward Cecily remained unchanged.
"Anais, answer the questions honestly, understand?" Larkin said.
Anais shook her head. She thought she didn't want to cooperate, but she said, "There's no need to ask. I did it. I opened the door, and I threw the child in."
Cecily's gaze had been fixed on Anais, observing her expression. When she heard her say this, Cecily's breath sank for a moment.
Darian also frowned, "Who are you protecting? You have no reason to do this, and you can't accomplish any of these things."
Anais slightly bent down, "Mr. Fitzgerald, I have my reasons, and I am not protecting anyone. The key is in my hand, and I am the one who throws the person in. I am the murderer in this case. Go ahead and call the police to arrest me."
Cecily stared at Anais, with deep coldness gathering between her eyebrows and eyes. "Why did you do this?"
Cecily knew that Anais was not the mastermind; Ophelia was. However, Anais was definitely involved in it.
"Her son must repay Mother's mistakes, but I am not capable of doing it, and I can't touch you. It just so happens that I have this opportunity, and I can target your son."
Cecily became even more confused, "I have no grievances with you, so where does this mistake come from?"
"I'm not talking about you," Anais' gaze deepened, staring at her intently as if seeing another person through her.
Cecily furrowed her brows.
Anais didn't want to talk much about this topic anymore.
Anais lowered her eyes and continued, "I have already turned myself into the police, and they will arrive soon."
After speaking, she looked at Cecily again, "But the wrongs have not been fully repaid; one can escape, but fate must be settled. With so many misdeeds done, retribution will sooner or later fall upon the children."
Cecily didn't understand what she meant by this, and she felt that Anais wasn't even speaking to her in the first place. The police arrived quickly, and just as Anais, who was calm just moments ago, was leaving, she suddenly dropped to her knees in front of Darian.
Darian's eyes turned cold, "What are you doing?"
"Mr. Fitzgerald, before I leave, I want to say a few last words to you."
Darian frowned, "Speak."
"I want to speak to you alone."
Darian glanced at Cecily and walked out of Fitzgerald's Family directly.
Cecily, who walked out of Fitzgerald's Family, looked up at the dark night sky and let out a deep sigh.
Every word Anais said had deeper implications. She had a faint feeling that the person Anais was referring to was her mother.
What kind of misdeeds? What bad things have happened?
Cecily closed her eyes.
She didn't have the mental energy to consider these things for now.
It didn't matter if there was no evidence. It didn't matter if no one wanted to confess about Ophelia. She didn't need evidence; she wouldn't let Ophelia go.
Cecily took out her phone and dialed a number, "Are you busy?"
A deep, hoarse voice came from the other end of the phone, "Hmm, I'm in Dorde. Something came up, left in a hurry, and forgot to tell you."
Cecily didn't believe that he forgot to tell her, but they both disliked talking about unpleasant things.
What he called "something" must be a severe matter otherwise, he wouldn't have returned personally.
Since he didn't want to say, Cecily didn't ask further.
Blaise casually asked, "What's the matter? Do you miss me?"
"I need to borrow a few people," Cecily said directly.
The man's voice grew tense, "What happened to you?"
"It's not me, it's Rowan." Cecily's voice became audibly choked up as she said this.
The man didn't hesitate and said, "I'll come back."
"No need. You can focus on your own business, send a few people to me," Cecily said.
Since investigating the evidence couldn't solve the problem, Cecily didn't mind using violence and taking everything back.
"Hmm," the man's voice became noticeably gloomy.
Although Cecily said to borrow a few people, as soon as she hung up the phone, she immediately transferred a sum of money to Blaise's account, according to the price of hiring mercenaries.
Naturally, the people he sent were the top members of his team, and every mission they carried out cost millions.
However, after a few seconds, the money was transferred back. When Cecily messaged him, the other party was obviously angry and blocked her!
Fitzgerald's Family living room.
Darian looked at Anais with a cold gaze and spoke in a cold voice, "What do you want to say?"
"Mr. Fitzgerald, have you fallen in love with Cecily?" Anais asked.
Darian's expression grew colder. "When did my affairs become anyone else's business?"
Anais quickly said, "I am not trying to meddle in your affairs. I know I don't have the right to, but Mr. Fitzgerald, Mr. Fitzgerald Sr. wouldn't let you be with this woman for a reason. Mr. Fitzgerald Sr. would never harm you. Even though he is abroad, he is aware of what's happening here."
Darian furrowed his brow. "Including this matter?"
Anais pursed her lips.
Ophelia was the mastermind behind the whole thing, but even though she was familiar with Fitzgerald's Family, she didn't have much power within the family and couldn't command Anais.
If there hadn't been a higher authority secretly orchestrating this, things wouldn't have gone so smoothly.
In Fitzgerald's family, Owen Fitzgerald was the highest authority, and even if he was abroad, nothing could escape his scrutiny.
Darian's cold eyes stared at her silently, anger flashing through his indifference.
"You said my grandpa doesn't want me to be with Cecily. Why did he make her marry me when I was in a coma from a car accident eight years ago?"
"That's because at that time, Mr. Fitzgerald Sr. did see potential in her, but later he discovered some things."
"What things?"
"Sorry, Mr. Fitzgerald, I don't know the specifics."
Darian asked coldly, "What do you mean by the wrongs you mentioned?"
Anais lifted her head and couldn't help but shiver under Darian's icy gaze, but she still pursed her lips and stopped speaking.
"I am just a servant. I can't answer you," she said.
Darian narrowed his eyes and silently watched Anais being taken away.
Anais had always been under Mr. Fitzgerald Sr.'s control. He knew that.
He also knew that even though Owen, his grandpa, was abroad, he was well-informed about domestic affairs.
However, he couldn't understand what kind of hatred would make them target even Cecily's child.
Now, Anais' words couldn't be connected in his mind yet.
However, he understood that Mr. Fitzgerald Sr. was not the true mastermind behind tonight's events; he only became aware of it and ordered Anais to help discreetly.
Who could this mastermind be?
Could it be Ophelia?
According to Cecily's statement, Ophelia was indeed the prime suspect.
Darian's dark eyes became even gloomier.
After Anais was taken away, Larkin came in and said, "Mr. Fitzgerald, Miss Cecily left on her own."
"Hmm," Darian raised his hand and rubbed his temple, "send someone to the hospital to keep an eye on her."
Although he knew Owen wouldn't do anything further, he still felt a bit uneasy.
