Chapter 146 Should I Apologize to Her?
"I'll look into the incident with the fall into the water. If it turns out she did it on purpose, I'll make her apologize to you."
Ophelia's eyelashes trembled as she listened to Darian's words, a bitter smile spilling from the corners of her mouth. "Darian, you don't believe me?"
Darian looked down at Ophelia with deep-set eyes and pushed her away, "It's only fair to both you and her."
Fair? A cold laugh echoed in Ophelia's mind.
She suspected even Darian himself hadn't realized how much his scales were already tipped in Cecily's favor.
Suddenly, Ophelia spotted someone approaching the door. A scheme popped into her head.
Gritting her teeth, she stood up, braving the pain in her body as she got out of bed. With a determined heart and a feigned stumble, "Oh!" she exclaimed, her dress not quite steady, and she fell right onto him, her hands wrapping around his waist by instinct.
The irritation in Darian's eyes deepened as he pulled her hands away. Out of consideration for her recent injury, he refrained from pushing her off directly, knowing she would certainly take a tumble.
Struggling to stand up straight and feigning hardship, Ophelia's voice was weak but laced with suggestion, "Darian, I'm sorry, my legs gave out, and that really hurt just now."
Cecily had finally managed to negotiate her way past the doorman to find Darian, only to come upon Ophelia throwing herself into his arms. She wore nothing but a bathrobe, casually revealing her shoulders as she whispered suggestive words.
Cecily felt her heart sink a little and quickly curled her lips into a wry smirk.
It seemed her timing couldn't have been worse.
Ophelia, as if noticing Cecily for the first time, called out, "Miss Cecily."
Darian turned, his gaze landing on Cecily, and he pushed Ophelia away, eyeing Cecily with curiosity, "What are you doing out here?"
Cecily offered a cool smile, "I wanted to discuss something with you, but it appears I may have chosen an inopportune moment. Sorry for the interruption. Carry on."
Darian observed Cecily's expression, then glanced back at Ophelia. Could it be that Cecily had misunderstood the situation? Was she jealous?
His face turned cold as he gave Ophelia a sharp look, having just realized how easily her words could be misconstrued.
"You did that on purpose."
Ophelia pursed her lips and looked innocently back at him, "Did what on purpose?"
She bent down, rubbing her leg, "My leg really hurts. You know I still have an injury there, which is why I couldn't stand steady..."
"And what about what you said?"
"I didn't mean anything by it," Ophelia said hastily.
Darian was no fool; he could read between the lines.
"Get some rest," he said, dismissing her before turning to leave.
The door snapped shut behind him as Ophelia chased after him, only to lose her balance and take a harsh fall.
Gritting her teeth, she got up and continued to follow him.
Cecily watched Darian approach, her smile laced with cold amusement, "Sorry for interrupting your good time just now."
Darian eyed Cecily, who sat gracefully on the sofa, one eyebrow raised, "Jealous?"
"Don't flatter yourself."
Taking a moment to collect himself, Darian asked, "What did you want to talk about?"
Cecily reached for her phone, intending to have an honest conversation about her child, when she spotted a glimpse of clothing at the door.
Cecily's brow furrowed. Letting Ophelia know she had another child would definitely put the child in danger. She swallowed the words she was about to speak and looked up at him, "There's nothing wrong now. I was just wondering when you will let me go."
"You will stay here tonight, and tomorrow I'll take you for a checkup," Darian said with an authoritative tone that brooked no argument.
Cecily sighed. "Why do you insist on a checkup?"
"I have my reasons. It's just a checkup, not a death sentence, is there a need to be so tense? Or is there some dark secret hidden in your body?" Darian’s words echoed with a hint of suspicion.
A slight tremor passed through Cecily's pupils.
Darian's gaze never left her, his eyes were deep and dark, his stare too intense for Cecily to comfortably meet.
Cecily forced a light smile, "What dark secret? I just hate how you always force my hand."
"It's for your own good."
"A noble excuse," Cecily scoffed.
He simply did not allow anyone to hide anything or deceive him, couching it in terms of what's good for her.
Ridiculous.
"Explain the incident of falling into the water tonight," Darian said coldly.
"What exactly do you want?"
Cecily didn't believe Ophelia hadn't played the victim in front of him.
From the corner of her eye, Cecily glanced at the door where Ophelia still stood. Was Ophelia so afraid of she revealing something to Darian?
Cecily couldn't help but laugh, "What did Ophelia tell you? That I dragged her into the water?"
Darian didn't answer.
Cecily nodded, "She’s not wrong. I did pull her in with me."
Darian raised an eyebrow, looking at her frank demeanor, "So now you don't even bother defending yourself?"
"I'm telling the truth. She was drunk, lashed out at me, and tried to push me in. Naturally, I couldn't let her succeed. However, I slipped, and since she was pulling on me, we both fell in."
Cecily didn't hide anything; it was the complete truth.
"So you mean to say it wasn't your fault?"
"What do you think?" Cecily challenged Darian with a look, feeling justified in her actions.
"You did that on purpose," Darian stated as a matter of fact.
Cecily crossed her arms and nodded irrefutably, "Yes, on purpose. She wanted to make me look foolish by pushing me into the water. I slipped because of her shoving, and pulled her in with me. I don't think I did anything wrong."
Darian furrowed his brows, pondered for a moment, and then spoke, "You mentioned she was drunk. Couldn't you have just let it slide? She can't swim, and the water was deep. It was dangerous, and you shouldn't have pulled her in with you."
At his words, Cecily first felt a chill, and then scoffed, "So I wasn't in danger? My leg cramped up, and I nearly drowned. So it only matters if Ophelia is in danger, and not Cecily?"
Already irate, Darian's comment only heightened Cecily's fury.
Darian frowned, "That's not what I mean, and there's no need to twist my words."
"Then what do you mean? Are you saying I wasn't in as much danger because I can swim, whereas she can't?" she retorted.
"Yes, that's true. You knew that, and what's the point of this discussion now? To make me go and apologize to Ophelia?"
