Chapter 584: Break off the engagement with Lillian and marry me, can you bear to do that?
The doc finally fessed up that the kid could've been saved, but Aurelie didn't want it.
Basically, she ditched her own kid to bail on him.
Nathaniel suddenly let out a bitter laugh, dropping his head, eyes blazing with anger and helplessness. He was so mad, he didn't even know what to do with himself.
He had no clue when Aurelie would wake up, so he just parked himself outside, not leaving, not going in.
Aurelie had woken up last night and hadn't caught a wink of sleep since.
She replayed the past few years in her head and couldn't help but feel sorry for herself.
She gently placed her hand on her lower belly. Just then, her phone rang. Aurelie took a deep breath, shoved all her feelings down, grabbed the phone, and answered, "Cecily."
Cecily let out a sigh of relief, "Thank God you picked up. If Nathaniel had answered, I might've called the cops. What's going on? Were you with Nathaniel last night?"
Aurelie pressed her lips together and lied, "Yeah, I was with him. I'm fine, don't sweat it."
"You sure? You sound kinda rough, have you been crying?" Cecily picked up on something off in Aurelie's voice.
Aurelie quickly said, "Nah, just a bit of a cold."
"Bull. I can tell. What's really going on? Where are you? Should I come over?" Cecily was worried.
"No need." Just as Aurelie was about to brush her off, the doc pushed open the door to the room.
The doc came to check on her, "You're awake. Feeling any discomfort?"
Aurelie didn't even have time to mute her phone, and Cecily heard everything, "You're not feeling well? Where the heck are you?"
Aurelie had no choice but to spill, "I'm at the hospital, but I'm fine, don't worry."
"Send me the address." With that, Cecily didn't give Aurelie a chance to refuse and hung up.
Aurelie put down her phone and looked up to see a man standing outside the room—it was Nathaniel.
'Why is he still here? What is he doing here?'
Nathaniel stood there, looking all calm, but his hands were clenched so tight his knuckles were white.
Aurelie stared at him with a blank face.
The doc must've told him, just like she asked, that the kid was gone.
He didn't need to worry about the kid anymore, he could let her go now, right?
Nathaniel stood there, and when he saw Aurelie, his heart twisted in pain.
Thinking about how Aurelie didn't want to keep the kid herself, his anger flared up again.
Even the doc could feel the weird vibes in the room. After a quick check and a few instructions, she bailed.
So now it was just the two of them in that tense atmosphere, Aurelie and Nathaniel.
Aurelie looked away, "You just gonna stand there and not say anything?"
She could tell Nathaniel was holding back his anger. They'd been together for over a year, and she knew his temper well.
"The kid's gone, you know that, right? Now there's nothing between us. You can be with Lillian properly," Aurelie said coldly.
Nathaniel clenched his jaw, his hawk-like eyes boring into her without a word.
Aurelie's brow furrowed, and her grip on the blanket tightened. The silence was suffocating, so she said, "If you got nothing to say, then leave. I need to rest."
Nathaniel's presence grew even heavier, his gaze never leaving her, "Don't you have anything to explain about the kid?"
"Explain what?" Aurelie looked at him, genuinely puzzled.
Nathaniel gritted his teeth and asked, "Did you tell the doc not to save the kid after you got into the ER?"
Aurelie's heart skipped a beat, but she quickly masked it. She coldly replied, "Yeah, I didn't want the kid anymore. I'd rather lose him now than have him suffer later. So, I told the doc not to save him."
Nathaniel's eyes narrowed dangerously, and he took a big step towards her, grabbing her neck and pressing her hard against the bed. His bloodshot eyes looked like they were on fire, "Why? Just 'cause you didn't want to be with me anymore, you didn't even want your own kid?"
Aurelie felt like she was choking, but she managed a smile, "Yeah, I didn't want to stay by your side anymore. Being the third wheel between you and Lillian is pathetic. I don't want that. Get it? So, I'd rather not have the kid and leave you."
She added, "I said I felt guilty towards you, but I have my limits. When you told me you were gonna marry Lillian that day, there was no chance for us anymore. I couldn't shamelessly stay with you."
Nathaniel stared at Aurelie's face, which was gradually losing color. His grip tightened, but his eyes, filled with rage, couldn't calm down, "What if, even so, I still won't let you go?"
Aurelie ditched the kid just to cut ties with him, but he just couldn't let her go.
Aurelie's eyes narrowed, "What more do you want? Or are you saying you've fallen for me?"
She looked at Nathaniel with a bitter smile.
"If you say you've fallen for me, then go and call off your engagement with Lillian. If you do that, we can be together. Do you dare?" Aurelie challenged him loudly.
Nathaniel was silent for a moment, faced with Aurelie's questioning.
"Speak up," Aurelie shouted. "If you want to be with me, you can't be with Lillian. Call off the engagement. Can you do that?"
Nathaniel raised his eyes and looked directly into Aurelie's, "I can't."
Aurelie laughed bitterly, "See, you can't do it. So what are you saying? No matter how low I stoop, I won't be the third party."
"It's not what you think between Lillian and me," Nathaniel explained.
"Then what is it? Are you gonna tell me you have your reasons for marrying her?" Aurelie looked at Nathaniel, trying hard to keep it together. The doc had warned her not to get too emotional.
Aurelie lowered her eyelids, her hand resting on her lower abdomen, slowly clenching the blanket.
Nathaniel pressed his lips tightly together, not speaking in the face of Aurelie's questioning.
"Get out," Aurelie angrily pointed to the door, "From now on, we have nothing to do with each other anymore."
The doc, hearing the loud argument, came over and saw it was indeed the two of them arguing. She said earnestly, "Miss Miller, you just had a miscarriage. You can't get too emotional. Didn't I tell you that?"
Aurelie took a deep breath, turned her face away, and wiped her tears haphazardly, "I'm sorry."
The doc frowned and glanced at Nathaniel, "Sir, you should leave for now. She just had a miscarriage and can't handle emotional stress. If you keep arguing with her, her body won't be able to take it."
Nathaniel nodded, "I understand."
The doc left after speaking.
Seeing that Aurelie had closed her eyes and wasn't looking at him, Nathaniel clenched his hands at his sides and walked out.
Cecily happened to be bringing Griffin and Rowan to see Aurelie. Seeing Nathaniel leaving Aurelie's room with a cold face, Cecily called out to him, "Nathaniel!"
Nathaniel seemed a bit out of it. It wasn't until Cecily called him that he noticed her.
Cecily let go of Griffin and Rowan's hands, looked down at them, and said, "You two go in and keep Aurelie company. I have something to discuss with him."
"Okay." Griffin and Rowan nodded obediently and ran into Aurelie's room.
Cecily walked over to Nathaniel, her expression cold, "Why is Aurelie in the hospital?"
"Why don't you ask her yourself?" Nathaniel said.
Cecily was angry, "If it had nothing to do with you, I wouldn't be asking you. But you must be involved."
Nathaniel sneered and looked at Cecily, his words shocking her, "She had a miscarriage last night."
Cecily frowned. The news was sudden. She had thought something had happened, but she hadn't expected it to be this serious.
"Don't look at me like that. She was the one who heartlessly told the doc not to save the kid," Nathaniel said.
Cecily was even more shocked, "To make a mother abandon her own child, you've gone too far this time!"
Cecily didn't believe that Aurelie would abandon the kid unless Nathaniel had done something.
"What did you do?" Cecily asked.
"What did I do?" Nathaniel coldly curled his lips, looking rather helpless, "I just wanted her to stay by my side. What could I do? She refused no matter what."
"But you're going to marry Lillian. What identity do you want Aurelie to stay by your side as? A mistress? Are you joking?"
Nathaniel's eyes turned cold, "I'm doing it for her own good."
He admitted that he wanted Aurelie to stay by his side for his own selfish reasons. He didn't want her to leave.
And besides, who else could help Aurelie now but him? She was alone, and the Miller family still owed two hundred million dollars. That group of people couldn't possibly repay it, so they would keep pestering Aurelie. Could she handle it alone?
Cecily stared at Nathaniel, "You want to help her? Because of that debt."
Nathaniel didn't speak, tacitly agreeing.
Cecily was furious, "Did you tell her?"
Nathaniel sneered, "Is there a need to?"
"So you played dumb and just forced her to stay by your side. But Aurelie is stubborn. This led to your arguments. Aurelie was only three months pregnant, so she got emotional and miscarried, right?" Cecily pieced together the general events from his words.
