Chapter 438 Owen Defends Cecily

Cecily didn't check the online buzz, but she knew the public opinion was still brewing. With Jennifer jumping off a building in front of everyone tonight, tomorrow's news would be explosive.

"Smart people should focus on their own lives. She's always trying to steal other people's men, even dragging her daughter into it, and constantly scheming. She's the biggest fool."

Listening to Aurelie, Cecily smiled quietly.

Aurelie leaned in closer. "Cecily, don't worry. Bad things pass, and everything will get better."

Cecily looked at Aurelie, who was always comforting her, and her smile deepened. "You're right. So, how are things with you?"

"What do you mean?" Aurelie blinked, pretending not to understand.

Cecily stared at her, eyebrows slightly raised. "Don't play dumb. You stormed off yesterday, wouldn't say anything when I asked, and didn't answer your phone. What's going on?"

Aurelie's eyes dimmed.

Cecily looked at her without pushing. "If you don't want to talk about it, just skip it."

"He's getting engaged to Lillian." Aurelie's voice was flat, but her face showed her true feelings.

Cecily had overheard a bit when Aurelie and Lillian were talking, but she hadn't expected it to be true.

"Cecily, we broke up last night." Aurelie looked at Cecily with a forced smile.

Cecily saw the bitterness in Aurelie's smile, despite her attempt to appear nonchalant.

Cecily pursed her lips. "He's getting engaged to the woman we saw yesterday. Did he tell you this himself?"

Aurelie nodded. "Yes."

She hadn't believed it until Nathaniel told her himself. No wonder Lillian had been so arrogant.

Turns out she was the last to know.

"Aurelie."

"Cecily, you don't need to comfort me." Aurelie lowered her head and forced a smile. "It's no big deal. We broke up, so what? I owed him anyway. If he wants to marry another woman, who am I to stop him? I should be happy for him. It's not like he's the only man in the world. I don't have to cling to him."

Aurelie's words seemed more like she was trying to comfort herself while feeling sad.

"Let's go to sleep. I don't want to think about it anymore. If you hadn't asked, I would have almost forgotten."

Cecily hugged Aurelie gently. "Stop smiling. It looks worse than crying. You should look in a mirror."

Aurelie pursed her lips hard. "What does it matter? You're the only one who can see it anyway."

Cecily patted Aurelie's shoulder lightly. "It's okay. Don't be sad. If worse comes to worst, I'll take care of you."

Aurelie laughed. "I've been waiting for you to say that. If I can't get married, you'll have to take care of me."

"No problem."

After comforting each other, the tense atmosphere eased a bit.

Cecily hadn't slept for a day and a night, and she quickly fell asleep as soon as she hit the bed.

The next day, as Cecily expected, the news exploded online.

The video from yesterday morning and the interview with Jennifer had already caused a huge stir. With Jennifer's suicide last night, everyone was now discussing the reasons behind it.

Fearing that Cecily might encounter reporters on her way to the hospital, Aurelie insisted on accompanying her.

Darian sent four bodyguards to protect Cecily, and Gary also went with her. They thought this would be foolproof, but when the car stopped at the hospital entrance, the swarm of reporters made it impossible to move.

Aurelie, sitting in the car, said, "Why are there so many people? Is someone behind this?"

Even Aurelie could tell something was off.

Reporters swarmed the car, bombarding Cecily with questions, not letting her leave.

"Miss Watson, you were there when Ms. Murphy jumped last night. Can you tell us what happened?"

"Miss Watson, you had a conflict with Ms. Murphy yesterday morning, and she died that night. Do you have anything to say about this?"

"Why did Ms. Murphy suddenly commit suicide? Or was it murder?"

"Yeah, Miss Cruz is still in critical condition. Why would Ms. Murphy commit suicide now? It doesn't make sense. Can you explain?"

The questions were sharp, hinting at conspiracy theories, almost accusing her of Jennifer's death.

"Cecily, there are too many people. The car can't move," Gary, the driver, said, turning to her.

Cecily reached for the car door, but Aurelie quickly shut it. "No, Cecily, you can't get out. They'll tear you apart."

Just then, several cars stopped nearby. Bodyguards in black suits got out, quickly clearing a path.

Owen, leaning on a cane, stepped out of one of the cars, his authoritative gaze sweeping over everyone.

Seeing Owen, some reporters turned towards him.

Owen stood still, his presence commanding attention.

A reporter asked, "Mr. Fitzgerald, Miss Cruz is still in the ICU, and her mother, Ms. Murphy, committed suicide last night. Are you aware of this?"

Owen nodded solemnly. "I know. I came here specifically for this matter."

Cecily looked in Owen's direction. At that moment, the car window beside her was knocked on, and she saw Darian outside and immediately opened the door.

"Darian, why did you get out?"

Darian, with a stern face and deep, dark eyes, took Cecily's hand. "Let's go upstairs first."

Cecily didn't delay, following Darian out of the car. She glanced at Owen, worried. "Will Owen be okay by himself?"

"Don't worry about him."

Taking advantage of everyone's attention on Owen, Darian led Cecily upstairs, with Gary and Aurelie quickly following.

Owen looked at the reporters and sighed, "I just found out about last night's incident. I'm deeply saddened by what happened, but the police have investigated, and the result is that Jennifer committed suicide. Please stop making baseless speculations."

The reporters wouldn't accept Owen's explanation.

"Suicide? Why would she commit suicide when her daughter is still in the ICU and needs care? It doesn't make sense."

"Then what do you think makes sense?" Owen's cold gaze swept over the questioner.

"Ms. Murphy had a conflict with Cecily in the morning. We reasonably suspect there was some grudge between them. Cecily was at the scene last night. Maybe Ms. Murphy offended Cecily and was killed by her."

Owen chuckled. "You said she was at the scene because she happened to be downstairs. How could she have killed Jennifer, who jumped from upstairs? Think before you ask questions. Don't just blurt out whatever you imagine."

The questionerpursed his lips. "I mean she could have had someone kill Ms. Murphy. Everyone knows Cecily's status. She has the means to do it."

"Really? Do you have any evidence? You're quite the analyst. Why aren't you a cop? Being a reporter is a waste of your talent."

Hearing this, the reporter's next words got stuck in his throat.

Upstairs in the ward, Cecily watched the live broadcast on her phone, surprised by Owen's responses.

Owen was actually defending her!
