Chapter 497 It Seemed There Was No Chance

Blaise's men quickly subdued Percy's group.

Percy's subordinates were tied up and thrown to the ground, still defiant.

They glared at Darian. "Mr. Fitzgerald, what a disguise, you fooled everyone."

Darian ignored them, thinking, 'What could a few dead men do to leak the news?'

Darian's men also arrived quickly.

Larkin hurried forward. "Boss."

Darian glanced at Percy's subordinates, his eyes cold. "Take them away."

Larkin replied, "Yes."

Percy's subordinates fixed their gaze on Cecily. They hadn't forgotten Percy's orders: Cecily's child must not be left alive.

Louis Turner quickly got up. Even with his hands tied, he still rushed towards Cecily with all his might.

By the time Darian noticed, Louis was already about to collide with Cecily. His eyes narrowed, and he pulled Cecily behind him, kicking Louis to the ground.

Larkin quickly stepped forward to restrain the reckless Louis.

Louis was pinned to the ground, baring his teeth and struggling fiercely.

Darian walked up, his expensive leather shoe pressing on Louis' face, his gaze chilling. "Your target is me. Cecily has no grudge against you, yet you aimed at her. Tell me, who are you working for?"

Darian had initially assumed these people were aligned with Josep. He believed they had taken Cecily merely to test him. With the results now evident, Darian had expected the animosity to be directed at him. Instead, it was Cecily who had been targeted.

Louis gritted his teeth, determined not to speak. Darian chuckled lightly. "Not talking?"

"You'll get a chance to talk." Darian lifted his foot and ordered, "Treat them well. Don't let them die until they tell the truth."

"Yes."

Louis was dragged up, his mouth full of blood, yet he still wore a sinister smile. "I won't say a word. You can give up."

Darian sneered, saying nothing.

Several more cars quickly arrived. Evander hurriedly got out, not even bothering with an umbrella, and rushed to Cecily. "Cecily, are you okay?"

Cecily looked at Evander, feeling a bit puzzled. "I'm fine. How did you know I was in trouble?"

It wasn't surprising that Darian and Blaise knew she was in danger, but Evander had always been busy with work. No one should have leaked the news of her kidnapping. How did Evander know so quickly?

"Evander saw the news online and heard about Freya being kidnapped. He called you, but no one answered. Fearing you might be in trouble too, he inquired around and found out," someone beside Evander answered.

Evander couldn't help but frown slightly, glancing at the person next to him, feeling puzzled, but he didn't voice his doubts at that moment.

Cecily didn't ask further. In such a situation, it was best to leave quickly. "Let's go."

Evander's men, upon seeing their bound comrades stuffed into the car, darkened with grim realization. The sight of Darian and Cecily together confirmed their suspicion: Darian's claim of amnesia was nothing but a lie.

It was clear they had failed in their mission. Darian had captured their people, yet Cecily remained unharmed.

But Percy had issued a strict order: Cecily's child must not be spared.

Darian glared at Evander, his brow furrowing in frustration.

Blaise, standing to the side, clicked his tongue disapprovingly.

It seemed Darian's secrets were on the verge of being exposed.

But that was a problem Darian would have to deal with on his own.

"Let's go. Are we staying to camp?" Blaise said lazily, turning to get into the car. At that moment, he noticed a kidnapper crawling out of the crashed car, aiming a gun in their direction.

Blaise's eyes narrowed sharply, and he drew his gun from his waist.

There were four gunshots in total.

At the same time, Darian also noticed the kidnapper crawling out of the car.

The first shot came from the kidnapper, the next two from Darian and Blaise. The kidnapper was shot dead, and everyone's attention was drawn to the three gunshots. No one knew who fired the last shot, which came just a few seconds later.

A few drops of warm blood splattered on Evander's face. Looking at Cecily in front of him, he froze in place.

The air was filled with a chilling silence.

When Darian and Blaise turned their gaze to Cecily, they were shocked.

As Cecily turned to step into the car, a sharp, searing pain pierced her lower back, like a jagged dagger tearing through her flesh and body.

In that instant, her nerves seemed to go numb, her mind blanking out.

She pressed her hand against the spreading pool of crimson on her abdomen, blood gushing from the wound. Her body gave way, collapsing uncontrollably.

The pain was excruciating, though she couldn't pinpoint where it hurt. It felt as if all sensation was slipping away from her.

But the dull ache in her lower belly was alarmingly clear.

A thunderous noise seemed to awaken everything frozen in time.

His heart, wracked with intense pain, felt like it was being torn apart.

Everything happened too quickly.

Darian's world seemed to collapse entirely.

Instinctively, he rushed toward Cecily.

But it felt like it was too late.

In her blurred vision, Cecily saw Darian's pained and desperate face. She heard many people calling her name.

She heard Blaise's hoarse voice shouting for his men to control everyone present.

Those voices seemed distant, yet right by her ear. Everything seemed so unclear.

She felt someone lifting her body forcefully. In the rapidly moving scene, she saw Bryan.

The Bryan she should have called father was staring at her in a daze.

In her final moments of consciousness, Cecily's focus narrowed to Darian. She felt him lifting her into the car, his voice pleading, "Don't sleep, Cecily. Stay awake, we're going to the hospital. Please, don't sleep."

Cecily gently raised her hand, wanting to comfort the nearly out-of-control Darian.

But she was in so much pain, so cold, her body too weak to even lift her hand.

"Baby…" Cecily whispered, her last attempt to tell him about the child she carried—their child, just a month old. Her throat convulsed, and blood spilled from her mouth, staining her face and blurring her vision.

She was so tired, overwhelmingly tired.

In her last moments of consciousness, Cecily felt a pang of regret.

She wished she could have told him when she got back, that she was pregnant.

She had imagined Darian's reaction, how he would have looked.

But it seemed she wouldn't have the chance.
