Chapter 439 Don't Be Too Sad
Cecily looked at Darian and asked, "Did you say something to Owen? He's actually defending me."
"Just showed him the evidence," Darian replied, getting up and looking out the window.
Cecily nodded. "Makes sense."
A bit later, Owen walked in. Seeing Darian and Cecily together, he snorted and sat on the sofa.
Cecily approached him. "Thanks for sticking up for me."
Owen took a sip of tea. "Don't thank me. I did it for Rowan and Griffin. You were getting trashed, and it would've affected them too."
"Still, thanks."
Owen looked a bit guilty. Cecily had explained things to him before, but he hadn't believed her and even scolded her.
"Enough with the thanks. Focus on fixing this mess."
The situation had blown up, and Owen couldn't just shut it down by scolding a few reporters.
The door opened again, and Sawyer walked in. "Sir, Miss Cruz in the ICU is awake, and the police have a new report. Surveillance shows someone followed Jennifer to the rooftop. The autopsy suggests her death might be a homicide."
"Homicide?" Owen squinted at Cecily. "Did you do it?"
Cecily met his gaze and shook her head. "No."
"Then it was your mother."
"No," Cecily said. "If my mom wanted to do something like that, Jennifer would've been gone a long time ago."
Desmond had also said Jennifer wasn't worth the trouble.
There was another knock on the door.
Darian said, "Come in."
Sam entered and said to Cecily, "Miss Watson, Mr. Whitaker wants you in Miss Cruz's ward."
Cecily's eyes flickered. "Got it."
Sam left, and Darian looked at Cecily. "Are you going?"
Cecily paused. "Yeah, I have to."
"I'll go with you."
"No, you stay here. Don't move around."
"It's fine."
Freya's vital signs had stabilized. Though she was still pale, she was awake.
Bryan sat by her bedside. When Freya asked about Jennifer, he hesitated.
"Dad, where's Mom? Why won't you tell me?" Freya asked weakly.
The room grew tense.
Bryan was silent for a few seconds before saying, "You just woke up. Rest first."
"Dad, I miss Mom. I'm hurt so bad, why isn't she here? Is she sick?"
Bryan tried to smile to comfort her but couldn't say a word.
Freya sensed something was wrong and struggled to sit up. "Dad, what's going on? What happened to Mom? Is she hurt? Sick? Please tell me."
Bryan didn't know how to break the news. She had just woken up and couldn't handle the shock. But he knew he couldn't hide it forever.
A knock on the door broke the tension.
Bryan said, "Come in."
Josep and Olivia walked in, and Aurelia was with them. Despite being furious with Freya for trying to use her, Aurelia had to pretend everything was fine.
"Freya, we heard you woke up, so we came to see you. Look, I brought your favorite flowers," Aurelia said, holding a bouquet.
Seeing Aurelia unharmed, Freya relaxed. She thought their actions had been exposed, but since Aurelia was fine, they probably hadn't found out anything yet. If they hadn't, Jennifer was likely safe.
Freya smiled. "Thanks, Aurelia."
Aurelia put down the bouquet and held Freya's hand. "Freya, don't be too sad."
Freya's smile froze. "Sad about what? Aurelia, what are you talking about?"
"Freya, you don't know yet?" Aurelia pretended to be surprised.
"Aurelia, shut up," Josep scolded.
Olivia quickly stepped forward. "Freya, don't listen to her. You need to rest. We just came to see you."
"What she mean?" Freya's face turned anxious. She looked at Aurelia, then Olivia, and finally, almost pleadingly, at Bryan. "Dad, what are they talking about? Please tell me."
