Chapter 696 Suspecting a Child of Theft: Conducting a Search

Giselle quickly said, "You should look carefully. Maybe you dropped it somewhere?"

"No, I've been standing here the whole time and haven't gone anywhere else. I've looked around, but I didn't see it," Imogen said nervously.

Imogen's acting was quite good; she was so anxious that tears were coming out.

Giselle added, "Don't worry. If you haven't gone anywhere else, it shouldn't be far. If anyone here sees it, they'll definitely help you pick it up and return it."

Saying this, Giselle looked at the others and said, "Could everyone please check around you to see if there's a diamond ring? That ring is very important to Imogen. If you find it, please return it."

Upon hearing this, the people around started looking, but no one found anything.

Seeing this, Giselle turned to the anxious Imogen and asked, "Think carefully, did you go anywhere or come into contact with anyone?"

Imogen frowned and tried to recall, "I was only standing with you two and had contact with Ms. Bennett's two children. I didn't interact with anyone else."

Hearing this, Giselle looked at Cecily, who had just reached the door, and called out, "Cecily, wait a moment."

Cecily coldly curled her lips and didn't leave, "What is it?"

Giselle walked over to Cecily, "Cecily, you heard what Imogen said. Her diamond ring is missing, and it's very important to her. Everyone has helped look for it but couldn't find it. She mentioned she had contact with your children. Could you ask if your children picked up a ring?"

Cecily's face turned cold. "What do you mean? Are you accusing my children of taking her ring?"

"No, that's not what I mean. I just want to ask if your children saw it or picked it up," Giselle said cautiously, as if afraid of angering Cecily. But her words implied that Cecily's children saw the ring, picked it up, and kept it for themselves.

Imogen and Cecilia also walked over. Imogen said directly, "Ms. Bennett, I only had contact with your two children. Before that, the ring was still on my hand. After talking to your children, I left and stood with Cecilia without moving. So I'm pretty sure I lost the ring while interacting with your children. Could you ask them if they saw it?"

"So you're saying my children took or picked up your ring and kept it for themselves?" Cecily's face darkened, and her pressing question made Imogen feel guilty.

She hesitated but remembered what Giselle had told her and what she had done. She regained her composure.

She had personally put the ring in the child's pocket, so a body search would definitely find it. She wondered how Cecily would explain then.

Thinking this, Imogen straightened her back and said to Cecily, "Ms. Bennett, it's normal for children to pocket pretty things they see. Maybe your children picked up my ring. Why don't you ask them?"

"No need to ask." Cecily's attitude was firm. "I know my children. They wouldn't take someone else's things. Even if they found something, they would return it, not keep it."

"Ms. Bennett, aren't you too confident in your children? What if Imogen's ring is really with them?" Cecilia stood by Giselle and chimed in.

Giselle raised an eyebrow and smiled.

Giselle took a step forward and advised Cecily, "Cecily, why don't you ask your children?"

"What did you say?" Cecily's voice turned icy, and her gaze at Giselle was even colder.

Giselle's heart trembled, momentarily scared by Cecily's look.

But she quickly recovered. Cecilia raised her chin and looked at Cecily with disdain, "Cecily, I was just saying. Don't get angry."

"So you're saying my children stole something?"

"I didn't mean that."

"Yes, you did."

Under Cecily's direct gaze, Giselle felt pressured, forced a smile, and said nothing more.

Imogen quickly added, "Since Ms. Bennett doesn't want to ask, why don't we just conduct a body search? That way, we can stop guessing."

"A body search? Isn't that too much? You haven't even confirmed if the ring is on the children. That's disrespectful," someone said, unable to stand it.

"Yeah, I think you're going too far. Just because they had contact, you're saying the children took your ring and now want to search them? That's absurd."

"Exactly. Besides, the Bennett family is a prominent family. How could children from such a family steal your ring? Miss Fairfax, you're being ridiculous. You were causing trouble outside, and now you're causing trouble here. Don't you think you're going too far?"

"I agree. If those children really liked your ring, the Bennett family could buy them a thousand. Why would they steal from you? Ridiculous."

"Miss Fairfax, let them go. Do you even know who you're talking about?"

More and more people spoke up, thinking Imogen's words were too much.

Besides, the Bennett family was wealthy. Children from such a family wouldn't steal.

Hearing the accusations, Imogen was displeased. "Everyone, I lost my ring, and I'm anxious. Since I lost it after talking to these children, I want to ask if they saw it. Is that too much?"

"Stop it. You clearly implied they stole your ring," someone defended Cecily.

Imogen gritted her teeth. Knowing the ring was with Rowan, she spoke more confidently, "So what if I did? I heard Cecily lived a modest life before returning to the Bennett family. Her children might have picked up some bad habits from that environment. Since I lost my ring after talking to them, it's reasonable to suspect them."
