Chapter 592: Things Are Very Complicated
Barbara leaned in, practically begging Lillian, "Ms. Lewis, we did what you said, but Aurelie didn't budge, and now Joshua's dead. It's just us three left. I don't know what to do. Those debt collectors are gonna be on us soon. Please, Ms. Lewis, help us out."
Barbara never expected Joshua would actually bite the dust. Heck, even Joshua probably didn't see that coming.
But now, Joshua was gone, and his debts were still hanging over their heads.
The casino goons would be knocking on their door any minute. They owed so much, they'd never pay it off in this lifetime, and who knows how they'd end up.
They were out of options. Aurelie wouldn't play ball, and with Cecily backing her up, they couldn't touch her. So, they had to keep begging Lillian.
Barbara reached out to grab Lillian's sleeve, but Lillian yanked it away, "What do you expect me to do? You think I'm gonna pay your debts 'cause you couldn't get Aurelie and Cecily to help?"
Barbara shot back, "But it was your idea. If it wasn't for you, Joshua wouldn't be dead, and we wouldn't be stuck. Don't you think you should take some responsibility?"
Lillian's face turned icy, "When did I give you an idea? Don't put words in my mouth."
Barbara's face twisted in shock, "What are you saying? You're denying it now? You gave us this plan, and now..."
"Got any proof it was my idea?" Lillian asked, cool as a cucumber.
Barbara was speechless, realizing Lillian was trying to weasel out of it. She panicked, "Ms. Lewis, what do you mean by this? Are you trying to dodge responsibility?"
Lillian smirked, "You're mistaken. What responsibility? Even if it was my idea, so what? Did I make your husband jump?"
Barbara was floored by Lillian's questions.
Lillian's smirk widened, "See, I didn't make him jump. Why are you coming to me? What responsibility do I have? Even if you sue me, the court will laugh you out."
Barbara was desperate, seeing they couldn't pin it on Lillian. She started crying, "Ms. Lewis, you can't be so heartless. Even if my husband's death isn't your fault, please help us out of pity."
Lillian raised an eyebrow and grinned, looking at Barbara and her kids. Her eyes sparkled as she said, "Actually, there is still an option for you. I can come up with another plan."
Barbara's eyes lit up, "What should we do?"
"This whole thing's blowing up online. Everyone thinks Aurelie pushed her dad to jump, leaving you guys high and dry. If you make a big stink about it online, people will feel sorry for you. The public pressure will force Aurelie to help you," Lillian said.
"Will that really work?" Barbara asked, doubtful.
Lillian tilted her head and smirked, "It's better than whining here."
Barbara, Nicole, and John exchanged looks. Nicole tugged on Barbara's sleeve, "Mom, let's give Ms. Lewis's plan a shot."
Barbara hesitated. Joshua's death threat didn't move Aurelie, so making a scene now might still be pointless.
Seeing Barbara still standing there, Lillian got more impatient, "Why are you still here? Don't forget, Joshua still owes us money. If you tick me off, I'll demand repayment right now, and that'll make things even worse for you."
Barbara flinched, knowing Lillian wasn't one to mess with. Scared she'd really demand the money, Barbara quickly said, "We'll try it first."
With that, the three of them hurried out.
Lillian watched them leave, her smile turning more mocking and disdainful.
Laura sighed at Lillian's attitude towards Aurelie, "Is it really gonna help to keep them bugging Aurelie?"
"Whether it helps or not, it'll definitely make Aurelie miserable," Lillian grinned.
Aurelie slept until evening. Cecily was watching the video of Joshua's fall online. It was clear Joshua didn't mean to jump; he slipped while trying to climb up.
At that moment, Joshua didn't let anyone get close. The firefighters had to stay back, so when he fell, they couldn't catch him in time.
Joshua's death was his own fault.
Aurelie must've known Joshua wouldn't jump, which is why she acted so boldly.
But now the problem was Joshua was dead, and he died because Aurelie didn't talk him down but kept provoking him.
Online, people were constantly slamming Aurelie for "forcing" her dad to his death, with a flood of hate.
So it was still a big mess.
Just then, Aurelie opened her eyes, her mind blank, staring at the white ceiling.
"You're awake," Cecily walked over and helped Aurelie sit up.
Aurelie looked at Cecily, "What happened to me?"
"Nothing, you just fell asleep," Cecily replied.
"What time is it?" Aurelie asked.
Cecily glanced at her watch, "It's seven. You wake up just in time for dinner."
Aurelie sat up straight, "It's so late. You should go home. Darian's waiting for you, right? Don't worry about me."
Cecily said, "Don't talk like that. We need to sort this mess out first."
