Chapter 594: Sending Aurelie Away
Cecily glanced at Rowan and Griffin, who looked like they were about to bawl their eyes out, and guilt flickered across her face. "Hey, kiddos, let me explain."
"Mommy, you don't gotta explain. We get it. Daddy took you on a solo trip. It's cool. Next time, it'll be just us three, no him." Even Rowan, usually the calm one, was fuming.
Darian stepped in, looking all smug. "Not happening. Tomorrow, you two are off to Owen and Sandra's. Enjoy your four-person trip with them."
Rowan and Griffin stared at Darian, their lips trembling, tears welling up. The next second, they were full-on crying, wiping their eyes. "We don't like Daddy anymore!"
With that, they bolted into the house, still sobbing.
They'd been promised a quick return, but six hours later, they were still waiting. It was already heartbreaking. They'd been holding back their stubbornness and grievances, and now Darian wanted to ship them off, making it even worse.
"Darian!" Cecily rubbed her forehead. "Didn't you see how upset they were? What you said made them cry. What are you gonna do now?"
Seeing Rowan and Griffin in tears was rare for Darian, and he was caught off guard, not knowing what to do.
"You're sleeping on the couch tonight," Cecily said, walking away.
Darian, paying the price for his big mouth, sat alone in the living room with a blanket, looking all lonely and miserable.
The next day.
Yesterday's drama had only gotten worse overnight.
The big issue was Barbara going online with Nicole and John, live-streaming and crying, accusing Aurelie of driving her dad to his death. There was live footage, and everyone saw it. Even though Aurelie knew Joshua wouldn't jump, no one cared. The fact was, Joshua fell to his death after her words and actions. No matter her reasons, she had no defense.
The Miller family knew this too, so they pounced on it, accusing Aurelie, and many people online felt sorry for them.
Barbara then claimed Joshua left behind a huge debt, and they were being hounded by creditors. They played the victim card, and some kind-hearted netizens tipped them during their stream. With a big audience, the Millers made quite a bit of cash.
Meanwhile, Aurelie took all the harsh words alone.
Cecily was fuming at the Miller family's antics and worried Aurelie might be too upset. She went to see her early in the morning.
When Aurelie heard Cecily's suggestion to leave Silver Frost Capital for a while, she hesitated. "Will that really help?"
"It's for your safety. You're pregnant, and that's the most important thing, right?" Cecily responded.
"But Joshua's funeral hasn't even happened yet. If I leave now, they'll make a big deal out of it," Aurelie said with a bitter smile.
Cecily had thought about this too, but given the situation, why keep worrying about that? Safety was the priority.
"Aurelie, listen up. Your safety's the top priority right now. If you stick around, the Miller family won't let you breathe. Barbara's already pinned everything on you online, and folks are pissed. Sooner or later, the creditors will come knocking, and Lillian's always looking to stir the pot. With so many people gunning for you, it's a mess. If you skip town for a bit, they won't find you, and you can have your baby in peace."
Aurelie pressed her lips together, her hand resting gently on her belly, lost in thought.
Cecily was right. If she wanted to safely bring this baby into the world, she had to get away from all this chaos.
"Alright," Aurelie nodded, making up her mind. "I'll go."
"Glad you see it that way. I was thinking, maybe you could crash at my mom's place for a while? As long as you're out of Silver Frost Capital, they won't find you for a bit. Even if they do, no one's gonna mess with you there. It's safer, and you'll have people looking out for you. Being alone isn't an option," Cecily said, having thought it all through last night.
"Thanks, Cecily, and Aunt Vivienne too," Aurelie said, grateful.
"Don't sweat it," Cecily said, pulling out her phone to book a flight for Aurelie. "By the way, did Nathaniel come back last night?"
Aurelie's eyes dimmed at the mention of Nathaniel.
Cecily hesitated, knowing the person who saved Aurelie back then wasn't Nathaniel. She wanted to spill the beans but decided against it, seeing Aurelie's current state.
'Forget it,' she thought. 'This isn't urgent.'
Cecily didn't tell Aurelie in the end.
Aurelie answered, "He didn't. There's nothing between us anymore anyway. I'm just grateful he helped me yesterday."
Cecily gently patted Aurelie's shoulder. "Aurelie, maybe Nathaniel had his reasons for marrying Lillian. He doesn't seem completely indifferent to you."
Aurelie gave a bitter smile. "It doesn't matter anymore. We're done."
Cecily knew better than to meddle in their relationship, so she didn't push it. The earliest flight was out of reach, so she booked an afternoon one.
Aurelie didn't have much to pack and didn't bother telling Nathaniel about her departure.
Aurelie left in Cecily's car. In a nearby car, Nathaniel sat quietly, smoking slowly. He squinted his eyes but didn't stop Aurelie from leaving.
Nathaniel also knew that leaving was the safest choice for Aurelie now.
In the afternoon, at the airport.
Cecily leaned in to hug Aurelie.
"Call me when you get there. Don't read the online comments. For your baby's sake, keep your spirits up."
"Yeah, I will," Aurelie said, her eyes moist. "I'll be fine."
"Boarding now, go on," Cecily said, letting go of Aurelie.
Aurelie wiped her eyes and forced a smile. "I'm off then."
"Go on," Cecily said, watching Aurelie walk away before turning to leave.
Just as Aurelie boarded the plane and sat down, two bodyguards approached her. "Miss Miller, someone wants to see you. Please come with us."
