Chapter 616: When He Wakes Up

Nathaniel got rushed to the hospital, and the second Aurelie saw him being wheeled into the ER, she just crumpled from sheer exhaustion.

She'd been feeling this nagging pain in her gut while at Todd's place, but she was so laser-focused on Nathaniel that she couldn't even think about herself.

"Aurelie?" Cecily was right there, catching her. "You okay?"

Aurelie gritted her teeth, "I'm fine."

"You need to chill for a bit. We'll wait here," Cecily insisted.

Waiting outside the ER felt like forever. Aurelie quickly wiped her tears, "No, I wanna be here when he comes out."

Cecily knew Aurelie was all about Nathaniel right now, so there was no point in arguing. She let her be.

After what felt like ages, the ER doors finally swung open. The doc came out and said the surgery went well, and Nathaniel's life was saved, but he was still in critical condition from all those nasty injuries.

The doc could barely wrap his head around how someone so messed up even made it to the hospital.

"Doc, when's he gonna wake up?" Aurelie tried to keep it together, but her anxiety was off the charts.

The doc said, "That’s up to him. He's still in a really bad spot, and no one can say for sure if he'll wake up. You gotta be ready for the worst."

What the doc said hit Aurelie like a ton of bricks. Tears blurred her vision, and her mind was a whirlwind of guilt.

The only sound outside the quiet ER was Aurelie's heavy, heart-wrenching sobs.

Soon, they moved Nathaniel to a hospital room. Aurelie looked at him, who was all wrapped up in bandages with an oxygen mask on his face. She clutched her chest, trying to stay calm, but it was just too much.

After a bit, Aurelie looked at Cecily and asked, "Cecily, he's gonna be okay, right?"

She was asking a question no one could really answer.

Cecily hesitated, then nodded, "Yeah, he will." It was a little white lie, just to make Aurelie feel a bit better.

Aurelie's eyes dimmed, and she nodded to herself, "He'll be okay." She was trying to convince herself.

Cecily patted her shoulder.

"Cecily, am I just bad luck for him? Eleven years ago, I got him sent to prison, and now I've put his life in danger. It's all my fault," Aurelie said with a bitter smile, her eyes filled with sorrow.

Cecily opened her mouth but then swallowed her words, "It's not your fault. You didn't have a choice in these things."

Aurelie just shook her head and pressed her lips together, not saying another word.

"Go get some rest. The docs are here, and nothing's gonna happen. You gotta think about the baby you're carrying," Cecily gently urged her.

First, she had a meltdown at Todd's place, then she waited outside the ER for seven hours without eating. Even a regular person couldn't handle that, let alone a pregnant woman.

Aurelie slowly lowered her head and touched her belly, but she still refused. She was scared that if she left, she might never see Nathaniel again.

"I wanna wait until he wakes up," Aurelie insisted.

Seeing she couldn't change Aurelie's mind, Cecily felt helpless. But noticing Aurelie's dry lips and exhausted face, Cecily said, "At least eat something. What if you collapse?"

Aurelie nodded, "Okay."

She needed the strength to stay with him.

"Wait in the room, and I'll grab you something to eat," Cecily instructed before heading out.

Darian was sitting on a chair outside. When he saw Cecily come out, he stood up and walked over. Noticing her red eyes, Darian gently smoothed her furrowed brow, "He's fought his way out of prison. He won't give up now."

Cecily closed her eyes in exhaustion, "I hope so."

When treating Nathaniel's wounds, Cecily had realized just how bad they were. Several of them were life-threatening and had nearly killed him.

But she hadn't dared to tell Aurelie at the time. When Aurelie asked about Nathaniel's condition, she could only say he was seriously injured.

After Cecily left, the hospital room was quiet, with only Aurelie sitting silently by Nathaniel's side.

The room was silent, except for the occasional beep from the medical equipment. Aurelie was wrapped in sadness, but her eyes were too dry to cry anymore.

As the world fell silent, so did people. And in that silence, their emotions became immense.

She stared at Nathaniel without blinking, unconsciously replaying the moments they had shared over the past year.

She even thought about that night eleven years ago.

That night had replayed in her mind countless times over the past eleven years. The memory had faded, but the guilt was still as strong as ever.

When Cecily returned with food for Aurelie, the hospital room door opened, and a group of doctors wheeled Nathaniel out.

Cecily's heart tightened as she watched them head back into the ER.

Nathaniel was being resuscitated again.
