Chapter 687 In the Shadows
"Then what are you planning to cook?" the chef asked.
"Noodles," Darian said with a stern face, devoid of any thoughts. "Please teach me."
"Do you really want to do it yourself?" The chef hesitated.
"Yes," Darian confirmed.
Cecily walked in from outside, and the chef looked at her with a troubled expression. "Mrs. Fitzgerald, Mr. Fitzgerald plans to make the noodles himself. What should we do?"
"Darian, I was just joking. You don't have to do it," Cecily said.
"If you want to eat, I must satisfy you." Darian decisively unbuttoned his cuffs, rolled up his sleeves, revealing a strong forearm.
Seeing Darian's serious demeanor, Cecily felt warm inside but also genuinely worried.
"Alright then, I'll help you." Cecily made a move to assist but was stopped by Darian, who grabbed her wrist. "No need, you rest. The kitchen has oil fumes."
"You're really too cautious, making me feel like a fragile porcelain doll. Can I at least sit outside and watch you?"
"Okay," Darian finally agreed.
Darian asked the chef to teach him, and the chef was a bit troubled. They hadn't expected Darian to personally come in and cook.
The chef taught earnestly, and Darian learned earnestly. Cecily couldn't help but lean in to watch.
Darian's well-defined hand held the knife to cut the meat, his movements clearly inexperienced, but he cut meticulously, as if crafting a piece of art.
Cecily stood nearby, not daring to call out to him, afraid he might get distracted and cut himself.
Darian followed the chef's instructions step by step. When it came to stir-frying, Darian asked Cecily to stand back. After the meat was done, Darian, under the chef's guidance, fried an egg.
Although the first one had eggshells in it, the second one was burnt, and the third one smoked, finally, after several failures, Darian fried a perfect egg.
Cecily stood by, encouraging him earnestly, "Wow, it looks great."
Laughter sounded from behind. Rowan and Griffin had appeared at some point to watch.
Cecily quickly went over to cover their mouths. "Your daddy needs encouragement."
What if laughing at him hurt his confidence?
Rowan and Griffin showed a look of agreement.
Finally, after much effort, Darian took the noodles out of the pot, added the meat and fried egg, and placed the freshly washed vegetables on top. A bowl of noodles was finally ready before dark.
Cecily stood by, surprisingly feeling quite hungry.
"Try it," Darian looked at Cecily expectantly.
Cecily took the utensils from Darian's hand, blew on it, and took a bite without hesitation. Although it was a bit salty, Cecily still praised generously, "It's delicious, and it looks great too. You have the potential to be a chef."
Darian, who had been watching Cecily nervously, finally relaxed upon hearing her words.
"Daddy, we want some too."
"There's more in the pot. Have someone serve you." Darian was in a good mood, feeling accomplished.
Cecily also praised him generously. Although she hadn't had much of an appetite recently and didn't eat much, this time she ate half a bowl of noodles.
After dinner, Darian still took Cecily for a walk outside. This time, Rowan and Griffin joined them. Cecily invited Aurelie to join, but Aurelie declined, saying she was tired and went back to her room to rest.
Cecily felt that Aurelie was still downcast, but with no news from Nathaniel, it was normal for Aurelie to be in low spirits.
As they walked, Cecily asked Darian, "Is there still no news of Nathaniel?"
"No," Darian frowned. It had been over a month since Nathaniel went missing at sea. They hadn't given up searching for him, but there had been no news.
Cecily pursed her lips. "As long as we haven't seen his body, I believe there's still a chance he's alive. Keep looking."
"Yes, we will."
With Rowan and Griffin running around and making noise, the walk didn't feel dull.
Back home, Darian took a call and went to the study. Cecily asked Griffin to check on Aurelie. Seeing that Aurelie was still awake, she called her downstairs to watch TV together.
The two pregnant women leaned on the sofa, each holding a plate of fruit, eating slowly. Desmond walked past Cecily, and she asked, "Desmond, where are you going?"
"Mrs. Fitzgerald, I have some matters to attend to."
Cecily glanced at the phone in Desmond's hand, her eyes flickering, and nodded, "Alright."
Watching Desmond leave, Cecily put down her fruit plate and stood up.
Aurelie asked suspiciously, "What are you up to?"
"Keep an eye out for me downstairs. Let me know if Desmond comes back." Cecily said, then quickly headed upstairs.
Aurelie didn't understand what Cecily was up to but stood up as well. She glanced out the window and saw Cecily already heading upstairs quickly.
Rowan and Griffin followed her.
Cecily arrived at Desmond's room. A passing servant greeted her respectfully, "Hello, Mrs. Fitzgerald."
Cecily simply responded to the servant.
Seeing Cecily lingering at Desmond's door, the servant asked, "Mrs. Fitzgerald, do you need something?"
"No, just walking off my meal. You go about your business," Cecily replied.
The servant then left.
Seeing no one around, Cecily quickly slipped into Desmond's room. She had seen Desmond take out a phone from his room yesterday and call Vivienne.
Opening the desk drawer, Cecily found the black phone.
Her eyes lit up as she took out the phone.
Just then, the sound of the door opening startled her, and she dropped the phone in fright.
