Chapter 678 Sorry, Cecily
"What's wrong?" Cecily straightened up and looked at Darian, her gaze meeting his eyes. Cecily looked at the emotions in his eyes with confusion. "What's up with you?"
Darian wanted to tell Cecily, but looking at her joyful eyes, he couldn't bring himself to say it.
Cecily blinked, even more puzzled. "What's going on with you today? You don't seem very happy."
Darian pulled her into his arms. "It's nothing. Knowing we have a baby, I'm very happy."
In the end, Darian still couldn't say those few words.
He had never felt so conflicted as he did at this moment.
Cecily couldn't see the deep sorrow in Darian's eyes; she only felt that he was holding her very tightly.
Cecily thought Darian was just as excited as she was about the news of having another child.
At this moment, in the villa where Vivienne was staying, the heavy curtains were drawn, and the room was dark with a faint smell of medicine.
Vivienne had just taken the medication prescribed by her doctor and was about to rest when her long-turned-off phone, which she had turned on today, suddenly chimed with new messages.
Vivienne forced her eyes open, reached for her phone, and saw the messages from Cecily.
Cecily: [Mom, I have good news for you. I found out today that I'm pregnant. Darian and I are having another baby.]
Through those simple words, Vivienne could sense Cecily's joy.
Vivienne's eyes instantly welled up with tears.
She struggled to sit up.
Then Cecily sent another message: [Mom, when are you coming back? I want you to be with me when I have the baby.]
Vivienne looked at the message, her heart filled with joy.
Cecily was having another baby.
But when she saw Cecily asking when she would come back, Vivienne's joyful expression froze.
A sharp pain shot through her stomach. Vivienne bit her bloodless lips hard, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. She wanted to congratulate Cecily, to let her know she was aware of this happy news, to care for and advise her daughter like any other mother.
But when the words reached her fingers, she couldn't type a single one.
Her heart sank heavily.
Cecily sent her messages almost every day, asking when she would come back and telling her about the things happening around her.
Cecily: [Mom, I'm at the Bennett Mansion. You don't answer my calls, and Desmond won't tell me anything. What's going on? Please talk to me. We can solve anything together.]
Cecily: [Mom, I went to the company today and received the shares you had Desmond give me, but you know that's not what I want.]
Cecily: [Mom, today at the company, Hunter and Keaen gave me a hard time. It was my first official day, and I was really nervous. If you were with me, maybe they wouldn't have bullied me.]
Vivienne had read these messages countless times over the past few days, but every time her fingers touched the screen, wanting to reply to Cecily, she couldn't type a single word. She didn't know how to explain it to Cecily.
Vivienne tilted her head back, tears streaming from her pain-filled eyes. Holding her phone tightly to her heart, she curled up, crying and repeatedly saying, "Cecily, I'm sorry."
Vivienne was filled with self-loathing, hating every decision she had ever made and despising her ailing body.
She wished she could go back in time. If she hadn't been so stubborn with Bryan and hadn't left Cecily with the Watson family, keeping her by her side, Cecily wouldn't have suffered so much.
If she had told Bryan earlier, Cecily would have been a child loved by both parents. And Cecily wouldn't have been used as a bargaining chip, and her other child wouldn't have been lost.
Why did she have to get sick? Why couldn't she be healthy? Why couldn't she spend more time with Cecily?
Vivienne was in unbearable pain, choking to the point where she couldn't make a sound, feeling as if she were suffocating.
"Cecily, I'm sorry!" Her hoarse voice repeatedly expressed her apologies, each word filled with heart-wrenching guilt.
Another sharp pain shot through her stomach, but this pain couldn't overshadow the pain in her heart.
The phone rang; it was Bryan calling.
Today, when Vivienne turned on her phone, she saw countless missed calls from Bryan. He had been calling like a madman, more persistently than ever, as if he would keep calling until she answered.
Wade had messaged her, saying that Bryan knew about her illness.
Bryan was frantically looking for her, she knew, but he probably never imagined she would return to the place where he had once imprisoned her.
Vivienne took a deep breath and hastily turned off her phone.
No matter how anxious Bryan was, she didn't want to deal with him. She hated him deeply.
If it weren't for him, she wouldn't have ended up like this.
When Vivienne found out that Bryan knew, for a moment she thought, 'So be it. Doesn't he love me? Then let him suffer with me.'
She put the phone aside, and in her weakened state, she accidentally fell off the bed.
The doctor and the maid outside heard the noise and rushed in, only to see Vivienne's haggard face, red eyes, and her sitting on the floor with a bitter smile.
The doctor and maid stopped in their tracks, tentatively calling out, "Ms. Bennett?"
They were the doctor and maid Vivienne had brought from the Bennett family. They had never seen Vivienne so despondent.
Vivienne didn't respond, and the room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
After a long time, Vivienne finally spoke, "How long did you say I have left?"
The doctor pressed his lips together, unable to speak.
Vivienne lowered her head with a bitter smile, tears falling. She murmured, "I'm sorry, Cecily. I really want to see you have your baby and share this joy with you, but I really don't have much time left."
Vivienne closed her eyes and sighed softly.
