Chapter 576: Buried Alive
"Yo, stay put and don't go wandering off. Aurelie's gonna swing by later. I'm off to check on Blaise," Cecily said, making sure Rowan and Griffin stayed in the hotel room before heading out.
Outside, Blaise was leaning against a black car, chain-smoking, his black clothes blending into the night.
By the time he lit his third cigarette, Cecily handed him a bottle of water.
"Want some?" she asked, raising her hand.
Blaise paused, then took the bottle, unscrewed the cap, and handed it back to Cecily before chugging another bottle himself.
Cecily walked over, looking up at the dark sky. "What are you staring at?"
"The stars," Blaise replied.
"What stars?" Cecily asked, squinting at the sky.
Blaise glanced at her. "What are you doing out here? Shouldn't you be with Darian?"
"He's busy with something messy, probably doesn't want me around," Cecily said.
Blaise's temper flared. "So you're only here 'cause Darian's not around? I don't need your pity. Go back."
He turned away, fuming.
Cecily rolled her eyes and straightened up. "Fine, I'll go back. You should head back early too."
She started walking away but turned around after a few steps, catching his intense stare, like he was saying, "If you leave, we're done."
"Why you looking at me like I owe you money?" Cecily teased.
Blaise tilted his head back, downed the water in one gulp, and moved aside.
Cecily got the hint and leaned beside him. "I'm serious. Whether you get mad or not, I'll say it. Blaise, you're important to me. I hope you find someone to grow old with."
Blaise's eyes lit up, but dimmed again at her last words.
He chuckled softly, looking down. "Out of all that, only one sentence mattered."
"Why are you mad?" Cecily asked.
Blaise shot her a sideways glance.
He was mad that even kids would be sad if he couldn't always be with them after getting married. Yet Cecily could still smile and congratulate him, showing she didn't care at all.
Blaise looked away, back to his usual cool self. "Nothing, that one sentence is enough."
The wind blew, bringing a chill.
Blaise noticed Cecily was lightly dressed, so he raised his hand but stopped himself, straightening up. "Let's go back."
Aurelie came running with Rowan and Griffin. "Cecily, Aunt Vivienne said she's heading back to Detroit tonight. You should go check."
Cecily's face changed; she didn't expect Vivienne to leave so soon. "I'll go right away."
She turned to Blaise, who raised an eyebrow. "Go on."
"Okay, be careful on your way back," Cecily said, getting into the car with Aurelie.
Blaise stood there, smoking another cigarette before getting into his car and leaving.
When Cecily got home, Vivienne had already packed.
"Mom," Cecily said, rushing into the house with Rowan and Griffin.
Vivienne's eyes were filled with gentle, loving smiles. "Why are you in such a hurry?"
"Aurelie said you're leaving, so I came back immediately. Do you really have to go so soon?" Cecily felt a bit sad.
"Yes, you and the kids can move back in with Darian tonight. I'm in a hurry because I don't want Bryan pestering me again."
Vivienne leaned over to hug Cecily. "Cecily, we'll see each other again. Why are you crying?"
Cecily didn't know why, but she felt uneasy. It felt like Vivienne could disappear at any moment, just like when she was a kid.
"Mom, can you come back after staying in Detroit for a while? Maybe two months?" Cecily asked.
"Two months? That's not possible. I have a lot to do in the Bennett family. Don't forget, I'm in charge," Vivienne refused.
Cecily said, "Then three months, six months."
Six months? By then, Vivienne might not even be around.
Vivienne's eyes dimmed. "I'm sorry, Cecily. The Bennett family really has too much going on. I can't come over often."
Cecily choked up. "Then I'll bring the kids to stay with you."
Vivienne smiled. "What about Darian? Who moves back in with her mom after getting married? Alright, stop crying. I've been with you for so long, I also want some peace, especially not seeing Bryan. So you must keep this a secret for me, okay?"
Cecily nodded with a bitter face. "I won't tell him, but I'll bring the kids to visit you."
"Yeah, Grandma, Mom, don't be sad. We'll come visit you whenever we can, with Dad too. Our family will always stick together," Griffin said, wiping his red eyes and pouting like he was about to cry.
Rowan's eyes were red too as he stepped forward to hug Vivienne. "Grandma, we'll miss you."
Vivienne squatted down and hugged both Rowan and Griffin. "I'll miss you too."
Standing up, Vivienne looked at Aurelie standing behind and gently hugged her.
Aurelie choked up softly, "Aunt Vivienne, I'll come visit you whenever I can."
"Alright," Vivienne said, looking at everyone with a gentle smile. "Okay, no more tears. I'm leaving now."
"I'll walk you out," Cecily said, wiping her tears and stepping forward.
Before getting into the car, Vivienne still had a smile on her face. "Go back. Remember what I told you before. If you can, try to forgive Bryan."
"Yeah, I will," Cecily nodded.
"Gary will stay here to protect you. With him by your side, I feel at ease. Don't cry, Cecily. Your life journey is still long. No matter how far the future takes me, my heart will always be with you." Vivienne had put on makeup, and her face showed no signs of anything unusual.
Cecily still felt very sad, nodding hard in response to Vivienne.
Vivienne got into the car and urged Cecily, who was still standing by the car, "Go back, be good."
"Mom, I'll come to visit you," Cecily cried.
Vivienne nodded, "Alright."
With that, Vivienne instructed the driver to start the car and waved to Cecily, "Go back now."
As the car gradually disappeared from sight, Cecily still stood there.
Griffin wiped Cecily's tears. "So, Mommy also cries a lot when saying goodbye to Grandma."
"I just can't bear to part with your grandma," Cecily explained.
Maybe because she had experienced losing her mother suddenly as a child, even after all these years, Cecily still felt incredibly heavy and anxious every time she parted with Vivienne.
Holding Rowan and Griffin's hands, they walked back home. Rowan looked up and asked, "Mommy, where did Daddy go?"
"He has something to do. He'll probably come to be with us later," Cecily replied.
At that moment, at the Fitzgerald Manor.
Josep sneered, staring at Darian. "Darian, you'll never know where your mom is. If I die, your mom will die with me."
Darian said nothing, his fingers slowly caressing the glass in his hand.
Aurelia, terrified, collapsed on the ground, clutching Josep's hand tightly. "Dad, I'm begging you, just tell Darian where Sandra is. Even if you don't think about yourself, think about me and Victor. We don't want to die."
"Dad, tell him! Do you want us all to die?" Victor also grabbed Josep, shouting.
Josep pressed his lips tightly, saying nothing.
He believed that whether he revealed Sandra's whereabouts or not, Darian wouldn't spare them in the end, so he preferred to say nothing. Because only this way, Darian wouldn't dare to act rashly.
Darian quietly stared at them for a long time before his thin lips spat out a few cold words, "Have you decided to talk?"
"Never," Josep gritted his teeth.
Aurelia cried even louder, "Dad, do you really want our whole family to die with you? I'm still young, Dad, I don't want to die. If you want to die, don't drag me with you."
Josep ignored Aurelia's pleas. "Do you think he'll spare us if I tell him? You're too naive! If I tell him, we'll die even faster."
"No, Dad, Grandpa won't allow him to do that. Dad, as long as you reveal Sandra's whereabouts, I believe he'll spare us. I'm begging you, please tell him," Aurelia cried.
Darian sneered, "Have I been too kind to you all, so you feel no sense of danger?"
"No, Darian," Aurelia panicked instantly.
"Larkin," Darian said.
Larkin stepped forward. "Sir, I remember the coffins Blaise sent last time. We stored them in the backyard, and we just dug a few pits back there, perfect for burying people alive."
Aurelia's face turned as white as a sheet.
Darian leaned forward, looking at the terrified Aurelia. "I gave him a chance, and he didn't take it. If you die, you can only blame your father for being too heartless."
With that, Darian signaled for them to be taken away.
Four bodyguards stepped forward, dragging Aurelia and Victor towards the back.
The two screamed in fear, "No, Dad, save us."
Victor shouted, "Dad, you can't be so heartless. Are you really going to watch us die?"
Josep hung his head low, listening to the screams and pleas. He finally couldn't bear it and lunged forward, grabbing Darian. "Let them go. This has nothing to do with them."
Darian's cold lips parted slightly. "Have you decided to talk?"
