Chapter 283 The Truth About Poisoning

Cecily looked down at Eliza on the ground. Eliza clenched her teeth, thinking about the poison in his pocket, her heart tightening. Darian looked at Cecily, and she gave him a reassuring look, then opened her arms and said, "My clothes only have pockets in the coat. You can send someone to search!"

Since Cecily said so, Desmond sent a trusted servant to search. Apologizing for the imposition, the servant checked Cecily's pockets, only finding a mobile phone inside and nothing else. The servant shook his head after searching in front of everyone. "Mr.Bradshaw, there is nothing."

Desmond nodded and looked at the person still lying on the ground. Eliza's gaze had been fixed on Cecily, and she clenched the bottle in her hand.

Cecily looked at Eliza and said, "It's your turn."

Eliza knew that she couldn't escape the search at this moment. She gritted her teeth and could only take a gamble. Even if she couldn't frame Cecily, she couldn't be caught with evidence.

She pretended to get up, and her body swayed. Desmond, who was closest to her, reached out to support her. She used the force to stand up, and her hand accidentally brushed against Desmond's clothes, throwing the vial into his pocket.

Eliza looked at Cecily and opened her hand. "Go ahead and search."

The servant who had just searched Cecily stepped forward and searched, but also found nothing. The servant shook his head and said, "There is nothing here, miss."

Eliza looked at Cecily and raised an eyebrow, as if provoking her.

Cecily didn't say anything. She allowed the search to not only clear her suspicion but also to observe the other party's attitude. Even if nothing was found on Eliza, it was within her expectations.

Evan had someone check the surveillance, and it was quickly retrieved. The surveillance showed that Elysia had instigated the conflict with Cecily, and in a fit of anger, she tried to splash coffee on Cecily but was stopped and ended up getting splashed herself.

Cecily hadn't even touched the teapot, let alone had the opportunity to poison it. After Elysia collapsed from poisoning, Cecily immediately came to her rescue. It was clear that the coffee pot was poisoned from the beginning, and it was aimed at Cecily.

Everyone present already had a good idea of what had happened.

Desmond glanced at Eliza, furrowed his brow, sighed inwardly, and walked towards Cecily and Darian. He said, "I'm sorry. We misunderstood. I will definitely investigate this matter and give you both an explanation."

In reality, Desmond already knew who was responsible, but because of Eliza's status at the Bennett family, he had to save her face.

Cecily smiled. Everyone present was intelligent and had already guessed who had poisoned the coffee. Desmond was just trying to find a reason to temporarily appease the situation and later find a scapegoat for this woman in private.

As the Bennett family was protective of its own, the whole truth might never come to light.

A chill ran through Cecily's heart, but she didn't plan to take down this woman over this incident. There would be plenty of opportunities in the future. She expected Eliza to keep playing dirty and reveal more of her true colors in time.

She nodded at Desmond and said, "Alright, we'll wait for your explanation. But for now, I dare not stay at the Bennett family. I'm afraid of being assassinated even while sleeping. We won't stay here tonight, but we will attend the banquet tomorrow as scheduled."

Cecily glanced at Eliza as she spoke. Their gazes met, filled with tension.

Desmond repeatedly apologized to them, and Evan, seeing that they were determined to leave, had no choice but to escort them out.

Desmond's serious gaze fell on Eliza as he said, "Miss, please come with me to the study."

Eliza's eyes flickered, and she nodded, following him.

In the quiet study, Eliza asked, "Mr.Bradshaw, what can I do for you?"

Desmond turned around and placed a small bottle on the table, his gaze serious as he looked at Eliza. "Miss, do you need to explain this?"

Eliza's eyelids twitched. The evidence was irrefutable, and she couldn't argue.

Anger filled Desmond's eyes. "Can't say anything? Why did you do this?"

Eliza lowered her gaze, tears soon falling as she looked up again. "Mr.Bradshaw, I had no choice. She is ambitious and wants to replace me. Her appearance this time is meant to cause trouble at tomorrow's banquet. I was afraid, so..."

"So you thought of resorting to such measures?" Desmond's expression darkened even more as he listened. He had never imagined that the future heir of the Bennett family would be so ruthless.

"No, that's not it." Eliza immediately shook her head, trying to justify herself. "I never intended to harm her. The poison would only make her bedridden for two days, ensuring the smooth progress of the banquet without any life-threatening danger."

Of course, this was a lie. She wanted to kill Cecily. Even if there were suspicions about her, as long as Darian didn't find evidence, the elders of the Bennett family would protect her, and she wasn't afraid at all. It was just unfortunate that she didn't succeed in killing Cecily and ended up exposing herself to Desmond.

Eliza could only apologize quickly, "Mr.Bradshaw, I know I was wrong. I was too hasty this time. I promise there won't be a next time."

Desmond was deeply disappointed in her actions this time. "Miss, you shouldn't be like this. If Vivienne knew that her daughter was so ruthless and unscrupulous, she would be greatly disappointed."

Eliza lowered her head again, sincerely repenting, tears continuously falling as if filled with deep regret. "You're right. It's my fault. I can't argue. But please, for the sake of the Bennett family's reputation, help me. This matter must not be blown out of proportion."

"You still care about our reputation?"

Eliza sobbed softly, unable to speak.

Desmond was also troubled. He wanted to save face for her, so he didn't bring up the matter in front of everyone. He furrowed his brow and said, "Go to the hall and kneel. The Bennett family has its rules. No matter who you are, you must be punished for your mistakes."

Eliza understood that Desmond wanted to cover up for her; otherwise, the punishment wouldn't be as simple as just kneeling. "Yes, I will go immediately. Thank you, Mr.Bradshaw. And what about Darian..."

Desmond looked at her with a deep gaze. "I will handle it. There must not be a next time for such things."

"I understand. There will definitely not be a next time." After speaking, Eliza immediately left. She gently wiped away the tears at the corner of her eyes, and the regret in her eyes instantly disappeared, replaced by a look of cruelty.

'Not happen again? How is that possible! Cecily is now the biggest threat, and I will never let her go,' she thought.
