Chapter 581: Miscarriage, Nathaniel Killed His Own Child
"It has been a few days since we saw each other, and you don't miss me at all?" Nathaniel raised an eyebrow, looking all smug.
Aurelie found it kinda funny.
"You're about to get hitched, and you think I should still miss you after treating me like that?" Aurelie snapped, her teeth clenched. Being held by him like this made her both anxious and pissed. "Nathaniel, right now I just wanna get away from you, got it? I hope you and Lillian have a super happy life together, and I'll just vanish from your world."
Nathaniel felt a wave of anger rise up. He'd been in a good mood when he got here, but her words ruined it in a heartbeat.
She had a talent for it, setting him off with just a few words.
His eyes narrowed dangerously, "Aurelie, do you get a kick out of saying stuff that pisses me off?"
"What part made you mad? Isn't this what you wanted? You want me to say I miss you, that even if you get married, I'll still cling to you? You think I'm that pathetic?" Aurelie shot him a bitter smile.
Nathaniel's anger flared. He was used to Aurelie being sweet and obedient around him. This thorny, hurtful version of her? Not his favorite.
His grip tightened on her, "After leaving me, who do you plan to run to?"
"That's my business. I'm only 29, my life's still long, and there'll be plenty of guys better than you. I can be with anyone. You don't think I will move on?" Aurelie laughed coldly. "Don't be ridiculous. I've always felt indebted to you, but I never loved you so much that I couldn't live without you."
Aurelie's icy words cut Nathaniel deep.
He stared at her determined face, suddenly feeling like they might end up as strangers forever.
Actually, he couldn't offer her much. They started because she was persistent, and he didn't mind playing along. From the start, he figured they'd part ways someday.
But now, it seemed he was the one who couldn't let go.
Seeing Nathaniel staring at her, Aurelie pushed him away, "Just go. I don't wanna see you again. If you really can't stand the sight of this kid in my belly, I can get rid of it, okay? Just don't come looking for me anymore. I've got enough problems."
Aurelie sighed, turned around, and wiped away the tears that had welled up in her eyes.
She took a step to leave, but Nathaniel's icy voice cut through the air, "Did I say you could leave?"
Aurelie froze. Even though Nathaniel hadn't laid a finger on her, it felt like she was tied up, unable to move.
Nathaniel's voice was cold, "If you are willing to get rid of the baby because I think it's a problem, since you're so obedient, why don't you listen when I tell you to stay by my side?"
Aurelie took a deep breath and let out a bitter laugh. "Is it fun to get married while keeping your ex-girlfriend around? What do you take me for, your toy?"
Her heart felt like it was bleeding. Why did he have to treat her like this? Did she have no self-respect, to be manipulated by him? Staying by his side, really becoming a mistress?
Enough was enough.
"Do you not want me to leave because I'm carrying your kid? If that's the case, I'll get rid of it. Will you let me go then?" Aurelie said.
Nathaniel stared at her, a look of helplessness flashing across his face.
Even if she had to get rid of the kid, she still wanted to leave him.
Nathaniel's anger grew, and his gaze at Aurelie became even darker.
"What if I told you that even if you get rid of the kid, I still won't let you go?" Nathaniel said stubbornly and domineeringly.
Aurelie bit her lower lip, her eyes red with tears of anger, "Do you have to disgust me?"
Nathaniel frowned, "You were the one who provoked me first! Now you want to leave, who gave you permission?"
Aurelie shouted in anger, "If I had known we would end up like this, I would rather you hadn't saved me that night. I would rather have died than owe you anything."
What had she done wrong? Since Sarah's death, Joshua married Barbara, and Barbara kicked her out of the house. She was targeted because she was alone, but in a moment of danger, someone saved her. But that person ended up in prison for ten years because of her, and she felt guilty for ten years.
Now the person was in front of her. She had once treated him with all her heart, full of humility and flattery.
Now he was getting married, and she agreed to stay far away, never to appear in his sight again. If he really found the kid an eyesore, she could get rid of it.
She had humbly retreated to the last step, with no more room to retreat. What more did he want?
Did he really want her to stay by his side without any dignity, just as Lillian had said, as the third party between them?
Aurelie closed her eyes, took a deep breath, but still couldn't breathe easily.
They fell into an awkward silence. Aurelie turned around and took a few steps forward, not knowing what to do, then suddenly stopped.
A sharp pain pulled at her lower abdomen. Aurelie slowly looked down, and a drop of blood fell to the ground from beneath her skirt.
Aurelie's eyes widened in shock.
She raised her hand to cover her abdomen. Could the baby feel her emotions, know how tough things were for her, know that Nathaniel didn't want him?
So the baby wanted to leave too, not wanting to be their child anymore?
Aurelie stood still, biting her lower lip hard, tears streaming down her face.
If that was the case, she agreed with the baby's decision. A child born without a father's love was better off not coming into this world. He should find a family where both parents would love him.
The pain in her lower abdomen was excruciating, but Aurelie didn't make a sound.
Nathaniel saw her standing there, her shoulders trembling slightly. It wasn't until he saw the bright red bloodstains on her skirt that his eyes widened, and he rushed over immediately.
"Aurelie!" Nathaniel shouted.
Aurelie's face was deathly pale, her lips marked with bite marks, one hand clutching the fabric over her abdomen as if enduring immense pain.
Nathaniel's heart felt like it was being stabbed. His actions were faster than his thoughts, he bent down and scooped her up, rushing to the car.
"Where are you taking me?" Aurelie asked through gritted teeth, in pain.
"The hospital!" Nathaniel's face was tense. "Hold on."
Aurelie looked at his anxious expression.
'Is he worried about me? I must be mistaken.'
Aurelie laughed, it was a bitter laugh, "I don't want to go to the hospital. Maybe it's better if this baby is lost."
"Are you crazy?" Nathaniel scolded her, placing her in the passenger seat, fastening her seatbelt, and then rushing to the driver's seat. He started the car, and it sped off.
For some reason, he had a feeling that if this baby was really lost, he and Aurelie would become strangers forever.
He didn't want that.
Not at all.
So he gripped the steering wheel tightly, accelerating again and again.
At the emergency room, the doctors quickly assessed Aurelie's condition. Before she was taken in, Aurelie heard Nathaniel urgently asking the doctor to save the baby.
'Save the baby? Why does he want to do that? Is it because he cares? No way. It must be because Lillian couldn't have children. He wanted to give my baby to Lillian. He said that himself.'
Aurelie closed her eyes, then stared at the glaring lights above. Her tears kept falling down her cheeks.
"Doctor, can my child be saved?" Aurelie asked, her voice trembling.
Given her condition, the experienced doctor immediately recognized it as a threatened miscarriage. Although the bleeding wasn't heavy, she was still in the early months of pregnancy, making it very dangerous. "We'll do our best," the doctor said, but there were no guarantees.
"Maybe it's better not to save it," Aurelie said desperately.
"What?" The doctor looked at Aurelie in surprise. "But your husband was just outside, he was very anxious, insisting on saving your child. Are you sure you don't want to save it?"
"Yes," she answered firmly.
The doctor wanted to say something more, but Aurelie continued, "That man outside isn't my husband. He's about to marry his fiancée."
Aurelie's voice was choked with sobs, but her words were resolute.
The doctor was stunned for a moment, then quickly understood.
Aurelie's face remained resolute throughout.
The doctor sighed. She had seen all kinds of situations in her years at the hospital, but if she wasn't mistaken, the man outside was genuinely worried about her and the child.
What a pity.
Outside, Nathaniel was anxiously pacing back and forth, his heart in turmoil, feeling like he was about to lose something.
When the doctor came out, he immediately rushed forward, "How is she?"
The doctor shook her head apologetically, "The child couldn't be saved."
Nathaniel's pupils contracted sharply, "How could it not be saved? She wasn't hurt. She was just standing there, doing nothing."
"She was only a little over three months pregnant, still early. Did you have an argument? Emotional stress can cause a miscarriage. Didn't you know that?" the doctor asked.
Nathaniel's eyes stung. Looking at the doctor and listening to her words, a sharp pain pierced his heart. He couldn't believe that just a few words had caused him to lose his child.
If he hadn't gone to see Aurelie today and pushed her, the child wouldn't have been lost.
But there were no ifs.
The child was gone.
He could say he had killed his own child.
The doctor looked at the man's pained and helpless expression, sighed, and shook her head.
Nathaniel's hands were trembling. He took a deep breath, unable to suppress the pain in his heart, and clenched his fist, punching the wall beside him.
A loud thud echoed. The doctor, who was about to leave, was startled, clutching her chest in shock as she looked at the dent in the wall. She quickly ran away, relieved that the punch hadn't landed on her.
The doctor didn't dare stay any longer.
