Chapter 617: Let Your Child Call Someone Else Daddy
Under that heavy, suffocating vibe, nobody dared to speak. The hallway echoed with hurried footsteps.
Aurelie was sitting there, cool as a cucumber, right next to the emergency room. Her eyes were red, but no tears. She looked like she'd lost her soul.
Cecily knew she was a mess inside, blaming herself, tearing herself apart. Those feelings could drive anyone nuts.
Cecily couldn't even begin to imagine how Aurelie would cope if Nathaniel didn't make it.
Three days and two nights, and it was a rollercoaster of resuscitations.
Aurelie stuck to Nathaniel like glue, refusing to leave. She watched him like a hawk, scared he'd stop breathing any second.
Worried she'd crash, Cecily used the old trick to knock her out, but even the tiniest noise would jolt Aurelie awake.
She sat there, numb, like a zombie.
Cecily had been hanging with Aurelie the whole time. Darian had to bounce back to Silver Frost Capital for some business, and Vivienne had called to check in.
Cecily had a lot on her plate. During those three days in Detroit, Vivienne kept dodging her, and Bryan was being a pain. Every time Cecily got near Vivienne, Bryan would latch onto her and accuse Cecily of causing trouble, which led to a big blowout between Cecily and Bryan. But Vivienne took Bryan's side and even defended him.
Cecily felt like Vivienne was ditching her.
At the same time, she had this nagging feeling of unease, but Darian told her she was just overthinking.
Luckily, Rowan and Griffin, who were with Vivienne, called Cecily every day to give her updates. Hearing that Vivienne was almost back to normal, Cecily finally felt some relief.
The door to Nathaniel's room swung open again, making Cecily jump to her feet.
After days of seeing Nathaniel rushed into the emergency room over and over, she had developed a reflex to get nervous whenever the door opened.
Thankfully, this time it was just Aurelie coming out. She looked at Cecily and slowly walked over.
Cecily blinked, “What's up?”
Aurelie plopped down next to Cecily and shook her head, “I need some air.”
Cecily finally relaxed, sat down with her, and grabbed her cold hand, “He's getting better every day. He'll wake up.”
Aurelie pressed her pale lips together. She was telling herself that every day.
She prayed every day, even willing to trade her life for his.
“Cecily, thanks.” Aurelie said.
After all these days, Cecily had been her rock, even paying off that debt for her, but she hadn't shown her appreciation.
“I'll pay back that money, even if it takes my whole life.”
Cecily lightly pressed her lips together, “Don't worry about the money now. Darian said to consider it a favor you and Nathaniel owe. There'll be a chance to repay it.”
Aurelie replied, “The favor and the money, I'll repay both.”
“Alright, I get it, but don't stress about that now.” Cecily's gaze fell on Aurelie's slightly swollen belly, “If you have a baby girl and she ends up with my son, that money might just be an early wedding gift from Darian and me to your family.”
Aurelie knew Cecily was trying to lighten the mood and smiled faintly, “You're thinking way ahead, already planning for the baby in my belly.”
Cecily said, “Who knows, I might be right. Now my sons both keep saying they can't wait to meet your baby. If it's a girl, she might just be my future daughter-in-law.”
Aurelie smiled, and for the first time in days, the atmosphere felt a bit lighter.
Night fell.
Aurelie still stayed by Nathaniel's side, not leaving for a moment. She looked at him and said softly, “I'll tell you a secret. I lied to you before. Our baby is still here. I don't know if you care about this child, but I remember you said you wouldn't allow your child to call someone else dad. But if you really stay asleep like this, I'll find another boyfriend.”
As Aurelie spoke, she tucked him in, not noticing that Nathaniel's fingers moved slightly.
