Chapter 562 Something's Gone Wrong
As Cecily stepped out of the hospital, night had already fallen. She settled into the car and seized the opportunity to call Aurelie.
The car glided smoothly along the road. "Hey, did anything happen at the bridal shop today?" Cecily asked, her voice laced with concern.
Aurelie's tone was slightly defeated, though she tried to sound upbeat. "Nothing much, really. Just don't worry about me. You should be careful when you go out, though. Make sure to bring extra bodyguards."
"Me?" Cecily raised an eyebrow, surprised.
"Didn't you see what's been going on online? The Lockwood family just announced your engagement to Evander. His fans have been going crazy ever since the proposal, and now that they know you two are getting married, they're even more unhinged. I'm worried some of those fanatics might do something reckless, so please be cautious."
"Got it. I'll keep that in mind," Cecily replied, although she brushed off the idea of letting online comments get to her.
Aurelie's words hinted at something darker. It was clear those fans weren't just venting online anymore.
"You really need to take this seriously. Bring more people with you. Some fans can be absolutely nuts. You can't imagine the lengths they'll go for their idols. I'm scared they might be tracking you or even trying to find your address. So please, don't go out alone, especially at night."
Cecily felt a warm surge of gratitude for Aurelie's concern, even when she was feeling down herself. "Okay, I'll remember that."
Suddenly, the car jolted as if it had hit something, and the driver slammed on the brakes.
Cecily gripped her phone tightly, her body leaning forward from the sudden stop. She straightened up and peered ahead, frowning. "Did we hit something?"
"Miss Watson, someone just ran out in front of us. I couldn't stop in time; I think we hit them," the driver stammered, clearly shaken, his face drained of color.
Cecily furrowed her brow, scanning the dimly lit road. She thought, 'The route back to the Lockwood Manor is usually quiet, so how could someone just dash out like that? Are they trying to get themselves killed?'
Ahead of them, a figure lay sprawled across the road, motionless. It was unclear whether they were unconscious or worse.
Despite her confusion, they couldn't just leave the scene without checking.
"Cecily, what's going on?" Aurelie's voice crackled through the phone, her tone suddenly anxious after she head the loud thud.
"It's nothing serious. I can handle it," Cecily assured her, hanging up quickly.
She stepped out of the car, the driver following closely behind, both of them shining their headlights on the person lying on the ground. The figure was face down, obscuring their condition.
The driver, clearly inexperienced in such situations, hesitated, his heart racing at the thought of having caused serious harm. "Miss, are you okay?" he called out, gently nudging the person with his foot.
There was response.
He pushed a little harder on her shoulder. "Hey, please don't scare me like this!"
Still nothing.
Panic rising, the driver turned to Cecily, his hands trembling. "Miss Watson, what do we do? I've been driving for years and never faced anything this serious. She's not moving… what if she's…"
"Calm down," Cecily said firmly, moving closer to inspect the person on the ground. She reached out and felt for a pulse at the woman's neck.
It was steady.
Just then, a flicker of movement caught Cecily's eye. Instinctively, she recoiled, throwing herself back.
A knife whizzed past her face, slicing through the air with a chilling whoosh.
Cecily had always been alert, and her reflexes had saved her from a potentially life-altering injury.
Cecily stood up, her eyes locked onto the figure that had just risen from the ground, a sinister smile stretching across their face.
"Th... this… she…" The driver stuttered, shock evident on his face as he stared at the person before them.
"Get back in the car and leave," Cecily urged, trying to reassure the terrified driver. "Just go."
The driver hesitated, glancing at the woman who seemed unharmed and was now looking like a predator ready to strike. It dawned on him that she had been playing dead.
But she appeared far more dangerous than he had anticipated.
"B... but what about you?" he asked, his eyes wide with fear. "What are you going to do?"
"Don't worry about me. Just drive away," Cecily insisted, her voice steady despite the tension in the air.
The driver's resolve crumbled as he noticed more figures emerging from the shadows, each wielding weapons that glinted ominously in the streetlights. They looked like trouble, and he had no intention of getting caught up in whatever was about to unfold.
Without another word, he scrambled back into the car, fumbling to start the engine. He backed up, spun the wheel, and sped off, leaving Cecily behind in a flurry of panic.
In an instant, the car was gone, swallowed by the night. The only illumination left was the harsh glow of the streetlights, casting eerie shadows on the scene.
Cecily took a deep breath, her heart racing as she picked up her fallen phone and tucked it back into her pocket.
"Cecily, we finally found you," one of the assailants sneered, stepping closer.
Cecily raised an eyebrow, her composure unshaken. "Care to tell me who you are?"
"You don't need to know our names," another one chimed in. "Just understand that we're not letting you walk away from this."
"Stop wasting time—let's take her down!" a third voice shouted, their confidence bolstered by the numbers.
Cecily was outnumbered, clearly in a precarious position, but she refused to show fear.
Meanwhile, the driver, still shaken, rushed back to the Lockwood Manor. Though he had left Cecily behind, his conscience wouldn't let him rest. He had to get help.
Inside the manor, Landon was the only one in the living room, deep in thought.
"Mr. Lockwood! Something's gone wrong!" the driver burst in, breathless.
"What do you mean something's gone wrong?" Landon narrowed his eyes, his expression turning serious.
"I was just about to drop Miss Watson off when someone suddenly ran out in front of us. We had to get out and check, and it turned out she was faking it—she's after Miss Watson! There are a lot of them, and Miss Watson is in danger!"
Landon's brow furrowed as he absorbed the driver's frantic words. "So you left her there surrounded by those people?"
The driver gulped, meeting Landon's piercing gaze. "Miss Watson told me to run… I didn't want to stick around."
"So, you left a woman to fend for herself?" Landon's voice dripped with incredulity.
The driver felt a pang of guilt, but self-preservation kicked in. "I didn't want to die! I had to get out of there!"
Landon glanced at the clock, his mind racing. "When did this happen?"
"About ten minutes ago," the driver replied, anxiety creeping into his voice.
Landon shot to his feet, determination etched on his face. "Lead the way."
