Chapter 656 Legitimate Means, Fair Competition
Since that was the case, why not make things clear? Cecily didn't like beating around the bush.
Keaen snorted, "Cecily, don't think just because you're Vivienne's only daughter, the family head and company heir spot is automatically yours. The Bennett family values capability. Giselle and my kids are all pretty capable. It's anyone's game."
Cecily got the picture.
So, they thought her visit to the company today meant she was gunning for the heir spot, and that made them all jittery and resentful, giving her a hard time.
She realized she was so focused on finding Vivienne today that she didn't think about how they'd see her visit.
Cecily said calmly, "Look, Hunter, Keaen, I never said I was at the company today to become the heir. It was my first day, and I just wanted to get a feel for things. As a Bennett, I don't see anything wrong with that."
After she finished, she noticed them just staring at her, not saying a word, so she went on, "I agree with Keaen. Anyone with the capability should have a shot at being the heir."
Hearing this, the two exchanged a skeptical glance. Hunter spoke up, "Cecily, whether you meant what you said or not, I'm telling you now, becoming the family head and company heir won't be a walk in the park for you."
Cecily raised an eyebrow and nodded, "I'm all for a fair competition."
She made it clear she was up for a fair fight.
Keaen sat down, looking up at her, "Of course, we don't believe in using dirty tricks."
Keaen was pretty calm. He had a son and a daughter. His son, Rufus Bennett, had been groomed for this since he was a kid and was now the company's VP. His daughter, Delphine Bennett, though not working in the company, held shares. His family had a good shot.
Hunter's eyes narrowed slightly. He only had Giselle, but she was smart, had gone abroad for a few years, and could handle things on her own in the company.
But thinking it over, Hunter's family was still at a disadvantage in this race.
Hunter leaned back in his chair, tapping the table faster.
"Right, Hunter?" Keaen raised an eyebrow at him.
Hunter snapped back and said, "Of course."
"Good, now that everything's clear, no one's left feeling uneasy. I'm full, you two take your time. I've got something to do, so I'm heading out." Cecily grabbed her bag and walked out.
With Cecily gone, Desmond had no reason to stick around.
Desmond knew today was a formal declaration of war.
He always knew Hunter and Keaen were eyeing the family head and company heir spots. With the Bennett family's fortune, who wouldn't be tempted?
But he didn't expect Cecily's simple visit to the company to make them so anxious.
In the private room, the two sat quietly, looking like they were on the same team, but each had their own agenda.
Keaen chuckled, "She said it herself, fair competition. When we went up against Vivienne for this spot back then, we lost. Fine, we stuck to the oath we made before the old family head died and played it straight all these years. But there's no way Vivienne's daughter is just gonna waltz in and take this position without a fight. We won't stand for that."
"Do you really buy what she said? Fair competition?" Hunter straightened up, took a sip of the red wine on the table, and looked all mysterious.
"She didn't seem to be lying," Keaen replied.
Hunter laughed, "Even if she didn't, our chances aren't as good as hers. Don't forget who her husband and father are!"
Cecily was Bryan's daughter, and Bryan had a lot of pull in Riverview.
Cecily was also Darian's wife. The Fitzgerald family was the biggest in Silver Frost Capital. After Darian took care of Josep, he took full control of Fitzgerald Group and recently bought out Kensington Group. Darian's got money and power like no one else.
If Cecily really wanted to become the company heir, with herself, Vivienne, and the help of Darian and Bryan, Keaen's and Hunter's kids wouldn't even stand a chance.
"Are you saying Cecily will lean on their help?" Keaen was puzzled.
"What else?" Hunter's eyes were cold as he downed his glass of red wine. "Unless she really does what she says and relies on herself, we're toast."
"I don't care about that. If she doesn't have the chops and takes that position, I'll bring her down," Keaen said angrily.
Giselle had been eavesdropping for a while. When she heard Cecily was about to come out, she pretended to leave and took a walk outside.
The private room had its own restroom, but Giselle knew they wouldn't talk freely with her there, so she had to leave to give them a chance.
Thinking carefully about what Cecily said, Giselle took out her phone. She wanted to figure out where Cecily got the nerve to talk about fair competition. Didn't she know they had grown up in the Bennett family, knew everything about the family and the company, and had been in the company for a long time?
Did she really think she could compete with them?
Giselle found it laughable. As she thought about it and sent a message, a cold smile on her lips, she suddenly bumped into something.
Giselle's phone slipped from her hand and hit the ground. She held her bumped head and looked up, ready to chew out the person in front of her for not watching where they were going.
But the man turned around with a cold expression, holding his phone.
The man was Darian. He was on the phone with Cecily when someone bumped into him from behind. He frowned in displeasure.
Cecily heard Darian suddenly stop and asked, "What happened?"
Darian replied, "Nothing, someone bumped into me. I'm coming to find you."
After hanging up, Darian had no intention of talking to Giselle and walked away.
Giselle held her forehead, feeling ignored for the first time. She stepped forward to block Darian, "Aren't you going to apologize for bumping into me? And you dropped my phone, aren't you going to pick it up?"
