Chapter 120 Carrying a Fake Bag
James went upstairs and told Donovan about the incident. He clearly showed his strong support for Chloe, while Ellie relentlessly insisted that Mr. Blake make the final decision. Donovan remembered that he had reminded Chloe to be careful about the bag Jacob had given her earlier that morning. He felt that Chloe hadn't paid attention to his warning.
"You dare to investigate my people?" Donovan said to James, leaning back against the chair with a sharp gaze.
"I know, but we can't ignore public anger without conducting an investigation," James said, sweating profusely.
Donovan's attitude made James feel that Chloe was in deep trouble this time. Donovan must have sensed that something was wrong, which was why he was trying to stop James from investigating. Additionally, Ellie's shopping receipt gave James a great deal of confidence.
"If we don't investigate this, everyone else will assume Chloe is guilty of stealing the limelight. If you protect her and prevent an investigation, she won't be cleared of suspicion, but instead, it will be even more embarrassing for her. I'm doing this for Chloe's sake, to clear her name," James said.
Donovan furrowed his brow slightly.
Chloe had been at odds with him for the past few days, and he rarely messaged her. There was no way he could do it now with James here.
The phone rang, and it was Chloe.
"Mr. Blake, Mr. Turner probably wants you to come down and investigate me. So please come down," Chloe said in a righteous tone.
"Are you sure?" Donovan asked, furrowing his brow.
He absolutely didn't believe Chloe could do such a thing, but if Jacob was behind this, she might not be able to escape.
"I'm sure. I want to prove my innocence in front of you," she replied.
"Let's go to the finance department," Donovan said, hanging up the phone.
James was inwardly delighted, thinking to himself, 'if Chloe is found out to be a thief, it’ll leave a bad impression on Donovan. It will become even harder for her to transfer to the auditing department in the future. She’ll most likely have to tread carefully under his supervision.'
This was Donovan's second time entering the finance department's office, the first being when he had dealt with Chloe over the shirt incident.
Ellie wore a miserable expression, glaring at Chloe without wavering.
Chloe had been working at her computer the entire time and hadn't left, indicating that she hadn't done anything during this time.
"This is the tag on the bag Ellie bought. Take a look, Mr. Blake." James took Ellie's phone. "It's this number."
"Chloe," James said.
Chloe reluctantly emptied the contents of her bag and handed it over to James.
"Sure." Chloe seemed to be confident and was very disappointed in the finance department. She continued to sit down and work.
Donovan watched her hands tapping the keyboard skillfully. As she was doing the accounts, she looked at the numbers quickly. She was a very qualified finance person.
He realized that Chloe was angry, but she didn't say a word.
"Well, Mr. Turner?” Ellie asked.
James’s forehead was dripping with sweat. He was afraid to look up at Donovan.
"Well?" Donovan asked James.
"This number seems different," James said.
"What?" Ellie sat down on the chair. "How could it be different?"
"How could it be the same? How could your bag have ended up with me?" Chloe growled at Ellie.
Her face had turned red.
"But clearly..." Ellie's face was filled with anxiety and confusion. Jacob was supposed to have given Chloe her bag. Had Jacob deceived her?
Ignoring everything else, Ellie snatched Chloe's bag from James.
She searched Chloe's bag as if she was grasping at the last straw.
She knew that she might not be able to continue working at New East Group after this incident. Mr. Blake had intervened, and this time, she had lost a lot. She didn't know if she was being played by Chloe or Jacob.
Ellie suddenly laughed.
Chloe felt a chill. "What are you laughing at?"
"I'm laughing at the esteemed CEO's wife who has a fake bag. Look at the labels inside. They've all been faked? It's beautiful on the outside but a mess inside." Ellie threw Chloe's bag onto the ground.
