Chapter 31 Give Me Another Chance
"Let's go." Donovan offered, grabbing Chloe's hand and they both got into the car.
Brayden was dumbfounded, pondering, 'Chloe was married?'
He sent a WhatsApp message to Jacob: "Is your sister married?"
Inside Donovan's car.
"Why haven't you told him yet?" Donovan inquired, pressing Chloe for an answer.
Clutching her bag tightly, Chloe cursed herself for her own foolishness.
"I just didn't have the guts," she muttered, her head bowed. It seemed it was time to clear up the whole "fake boyfriend" situation.
"Embarrassed about being married? Or afraid it would cut off his flirty advances toward you?" Donovan questioned, his words dripped with sarcasm.
"It's not like that..." Chloe explained.
"He isn't he supposed to be at his internship? How come he's attending class with you?" Donovan asked again.
Throughout the day, Donovan's tone was icy cold, sending a chill down her spine.
"He's an instructor at the training program. He teaches me Business Law." Chloe explained." So, every time you go to this program, is it just to have a secret rendezvous with him?" Donovan continued.
"No..."
"No more training classes from now on!" Donovan ordered with a stern rebuke.
Chloe panicked at his words.
"This program, I paid $18,000 for a guaranteed pass class. They don't offer refunds," Chloe asserted defiantly.
"No more classes!" Donovan's voice was cold and firm, "I'll give you $180,000. You are not going! If you dare, I'll break your leg!"
Chloe knew it was futile to struggle, and the more she resisted, the harsher he became. Frustrated, she leaned back in her car seat and closed her eyes to rest.
The car stopped at their hillside villa, Donovan took out his cellphone, and transferred $180,000 to Chloe's account.
Angrily, Chloe grabbed her backpack and left without even having dinner. She went to bed early.
"What's wrong with Chloe?" Samuel asked with concern, "Isn't she eating dinner?"
"She's throwing a tantrum upstairs!" Even Samuel laughed heartily, "Even if she's upset, you should still give in to her a bit. After all, you're so much older than she is."
Donovan didn't respond.
Going upstairs, he saw Chloe lying in bed, covered with her blanket. Donovan yanked the blanket away.
"What are you doing?" Chloe snapped, squinting as she was suddenly exposed to the light.
"Being upset won't change anything. You'd better accept that," Donovan said coldly.
Chloe sniffed, turning her back to ignore Donovan.
It seemed she would have to find another way to attend the training program. It wasn't that Chloe was so attached to the program itself, but the thought of wasting $18,000 on something with no issues between her and Brayden pained her.
Chloe hadn't slept well the night before, and when she woke up in the morning, Donovan was standing by the bed getting dressed.
Chloe got up, picked up Donovan's shirt, and started to help him put it on.
Donovan frowned slightly, unsure of what Chloe was thinking, but her demeanor was gentle, the picture of a supportive spouse.
"Brayden isn't actually my boyfriend. I lied to you about that," Chloe said as she slipped a sleeve over Donovan's arm, her fingers grazing his chest, the warm touch bringing a comfortable sensation that suffused his heart.
"So, is there any truth in what you say?" Donovan asked, looking down at her.
Although his tone was reproachful, there was a softness to it.
Chloe sensed his tenderness, encouraging herself to retort, "Well, when you asked me to marry you, I didn't want to, so I made up the excuse of having a boyfriend. It just so happened that he'd sent a friend request on WhatsApp, which I never accepted. When you asked me his name, I just said the first name that came to mind. I never imagined there was actually a person by that name who turns out to be Jacob's boss's son, who teaches at the coaching center. Jacob wanted to set me up with him, and that's why he added me to WhatsApp."
"You better be telling the truth!" Donovan demanded.
"Of course, I'm telling the truth," Chloe insisted, her hands busy with his buttons, innocent large eyes gazing up at him naively.
"Trying to fool me?" Donovan continued.
"Do you think you're that easy to fool, Mr. Blake? You're smart and intelligent. Who could possibly fool you?" Chloe spoke with a feigned tone of exasperation.
"He's been doggedly pursuing you. Maybe not now, but who knows about the future," Donovan said, his voice milder but still laced with a tinge of discomfort.
"I'm not that kind of person, and besides, I'm married now. If I dared to cheat on you, you'd probably break my legs," Chloe cooed, leaning in toward Donovan's chest.
Donovan fell silent, ready to leave.
"Honey, please let me attend the coaching class. There's nothing between Brayden and me. Jacob set me up that day. Nothing happened between us," Chloe pleaded, stopping Donovan in his tracks.
"Go on," he said.
"Babe, our money is family money, it's just moving from one pocket to the other. Giving it to the coaching center means it's really going to someone else, it's a waste." Chloe persisted.
In the end, Donovan's ire subsided, demanding, "Let me know when you're going to classes, and have Maya accompany you every time!"
"Thank you, honey," Chloe said with a large grin. Chloe was jubilant, planting a quick kiss on Donovan's cheek.
She expected that he might be angry, but Donovan merely looked at her, silent, seemingly appreciative of the gesture.
Through this interaction, Chloe had discovered Donovan's soft spot. As long as she didn't contradict him and instead praised and went along with him, things would be fine.
