Chapter 169 Chloe
On the second day of the holiday, after lunch, Jacob and Karen arrived.
Jacob appeared very submissive.
Karen kept eyeing Donovan's luxurious mansion.
"Mom, I came to wish you a happy new year. I came back home yesterday, but the door was locked. I thought you might be at Chloe's house. This is my girlfriend Karen," Jacob said, introducing Karen to Amelia.
Jacob looked around the mansion but didn't see Donovan, and Chloe wasn't downstairs either.
Amelia didn't like Karen. She thought this girl looked a bit too seductive, the type that any mother-in-law wouldn't like, and Karen's eyes were greedy and unsatisfied, always wanting more and not content with what she already had.
But Amelia wasn't a difficult person.
She hadn't raised her son well back then. For six years, she had been lying in a hospital bed. What right did she have to judge others?
"Alright." After speaking, Amelia gave Karen some pocket money.
All of Amelia's money came from Chloe.
Karen felt disdainful as the pocket money wasn't much. She looked down on Amelia.
Others would give diamond jewelry as a gift when they first met, but she didn't mind.
"Where's Donovan?" Jacob looked around and didn't see Donovan, so he asked Amelia.
"He's probably in the study upstairs."
Without saying a word, Jacob went upstairs.
Amelia raised her hand, wanting to stop him, but Jacob didn't notice her.
Amelia sighed, feeling she hadn't taught him good manners.
Seeing Amelia's reaction, Karen felt even more disdainful toward her.
Jacob knocked on the door of Donovan's study.
The HR department had sent Donovan this year's personnel appointments, and Donovan was looking at them on the computer.
"Jacob?" Donovan was surprised.
He didn't like Jacob, but Jacob was useful.
"Donovan," Jacob said and half-closed the door to the study.
Chloe had been reading in the bedroom and heard some commotion downstairs and in the study. Thinking that someone had come to the house, she came out to see.
As she passed by the study, she heard the conversation inside.
"Donovan, the big house you gave me is really great. Except for the slightly high property fees, everything else is perfect," Jacob said.
"Someone will take care of the property fees for you, don't worry about it," Donovan said, one hand supporting his chin and the other flipping through pages on the computer.
"That's good," Jacob sighed in relief.
He had come mainly for this today. How could he afford the monthly ten thousand property fee?
"Oh, about the incident with Brayden before the New Year, I didn't mention it to you before. Are you satisfied with it?"
Chloe's ears perked up, knowing they were probably talking about Brayden and Ellie.
"In the future, report such matters in advance," Donovan said coldly.
"Alright," Jacob said with a forced smile. "I was the one who spiked the drink, but Brayden always suspected Ellie from the same office. Ellie also liked him. Brayden drank the spiked drink, falling right into her trap. I've been undercover with Brayden all this time, and nothing has happened."
It turned out that this matter wasn't arranged by Donovan, and he didn't know about it beforehand.
Donovan remained silent.
Jacob walked out of the study door and almost bumped into Chloe.
Chloe stood there, lost in thought, and Donovan also came out.
"Eavesdropping?" he asked Chloe.
Donovan always spoke so directly, leaving Chloe unsure how to respond.
After all the past misunderstandings with him, now that the situation wasn't orchestrated by him, Chloe felt a bit guilty.
"Chloe, come here," Donovan called out to her from elsewhere.
"What?" Upon hearing her name called, Chloe instinctively responded.
"I wasn't talking to you, don't jump to conclusions."
Chloe was speechless.
By the time they returned downstairs, Jacob and Karen had already left.
