Chapter 346 Someone is Coming
Donovan noticed Chloe's legs shaking, and he felt a pang of sympathy. But he knew she had to step up as a mom. If she didn't, she'd drift further from Francis. Without a child to bond with them, she could leave anytime.
Chloe headed to Kimberly's room. Kimberly was a top-notch nanny, super professional, and serious about her job.
Francis and Kimberly were in bed together.
"Is the baby crying?" Chloe asked.
"Yes, ma'am, he woke up and cried."
Chloe sat by the bed, clapped her hands, and said to Francis, "Come here, let mommy hold you."
But Francis cried even harder, reaching out for Kimberly instead.
Chloe forced a smile, her hands still in the air.
'Is this the mother-child bond? I wasn't fond of Francis at first, and he knew it,' she thought.
She was trying to change her mindset. Francis was her biological child, after all. She couldn't take out her anger on him because of the daughter she never met. During the New Year, she was in a bad mood, and the child's development suffered, primarily because of her.
She'd been trying to pull herself out of depression.
But Francis was still distant.
Because of her past actions, the child didn't like her anymore.
Seeing Chloe in a daze, Kimberly comforted her, "Ma'am, don't overthink it. The child will still be close to his mom. He just woke up and is looking for the nearest embrace. He doesn't recognize people yet."
Chloe just responded with a "Hmm," feeling very disappointed inside.
She stayed in Kimberly's room a bit longer and left only after Francis fell asleep.
When she walked into the living room, the doorbell rang.
'This late? Who could it be?' she thought.
Chloe picked up the intercom by the door, and a figure and voice appeared on the other end. "Chloe, it's Mom."
Chloe started to shiver, her hands trembling.
It was Clara.
Chloe thought she'd moved past the shadow of her biological mother Amelia's death and that the scars had healed. But Clara's appearance brought it all back, and her reaction betrayed her true feelings.
Deep down, she still resented that Amelia's killer hadn't been caught. The resentment was buried in her heart and hadn't faded.
Chloe used the remote to open the main door and the room door.
Before long, Clara and Gordon stood in front of her.
Chloe's legs were still shaking.
"Mom," Chloe called Clara, but the word "Dad" was stuck in her throat.
Gordon kept his head down, avoiding Chloe's eyes.
Chloe gritted her teeth.
Donovan had never mentioned the details of Amelia's death, but Chloe had pieced it together: Gordon mistook Amelia for Sarah and pushed her down the stairs. It was unlikely Donovan did it. He had no grudge against Amelia. Besides, Todd's corneas were given to him, and he had repaid Amelia, although she didn't accept it. So, the most likely scenario was that Gordon pushed her.
Seeing Gordon's guilty look now, Chloe was even more certain.
"Mom, why are you here?" Although Chloe was trembling, she still maintained her politeness.
"You had a baby and didn't tell us?" Clara looked at Chloe lovingly and tucked her hair behind her ear.
"Did Donovan tell you?" Chloe clenched her palm tightly.
"No," Clara said, lowering her head. "It wasn't him. We heard it from Charles's parents. They are all abroad. They mentioned it by chance last time and asked why we hadn't come back to see you..."
Clara suddenly broke into tears. "We're grandparents now. Chloe, this is a gift from Mom. The bank card password is six zeros. Your dad and I didn't save much money abroad these years. Besides, you had a baby, and I should take care of you."
Clara held Chloe's hand.
