Chapter 503 Daddy
"I like Chloe. Is that cool?" Derek looked straight at Donovan. "She's divorced. Even if she was married before, that's old news. And she hasn't talked to you in three years, so there's no chance, right, Mr. Blake? Did I say anything wrong?"
Donovan raised an eyebrow and smirked, "Nope, nothing wrong."
"For the past three years, we've been friends and more, always there for each other. I think it's time to take it to the next level. Even if we come to the stage of tying the knot, there was nothing wrong with that either," Derek went on.
"If you two are getting married, why are you still sleeping in separate rooms?" Donovan smirked again.
"I respect Chloe. I don't want to push her. Her ex-husband is into non-con stuff in the bedroom, and she hates that. I don't want to make her uncomfortable, so I haven't made a move. She once wanted to come to my room, but I said no. I know she just got back and is still a bit shaky. I'm not gonna take advantage of her. Isn't that right, Mr. Blake?" Derek's words were sharp, and Donovan felt every jab.
'And Chloe even told him about our bedroom stuff. How close are they?' Donovan wondered.
"Seems like you're quite the gentleman," Donovan mocked.
"Not a gentleman, but I'm not a creep either. You know Chloe is scared of you? Sometimes she's so scared she can hardly breathe," Derek said.
"And how do you know that?" Donovan asked coolly.
"She tells me everything."
"Of course, you're a psychologist," Donovan said, right on cue.
"You've taken three lives without a second thought. She has every reason to be scared. Isn't that right, Mr. Blake? It's like sleeping next to someone with a knife under their pillow. How could you dare to share a bed with them? Her fear is justified. Besides, you don't have deep feelings for Chloe. A random start, a post-marriage fling—you can't even call it a romance. It's just daily life after marriage," Derek said. "Alright, Mr. Blake, I'm tired. I'm heading back to Emerald Isle tomorrow."
Derek had said his piece. Donovan walked out of the Pearl Peak Hotel and lit a cigarette.
'I have indeed met a tough opponent. And what's the deal between Chloe and Pamela? How come Derek hasn't figured it out after three years of digging?' As Donovan was lost in thought, his phone rang. It was Cynthia.
"Hello," Donovan answered.
"Daddy," said the voice on the other end.
Donovan paused for a moment, then said, "I'm not your Daddy. Are you feeling better?"
"Yeah, I'm better," Jake replied.
"No more fever?" Donovan asked.
"No more fever. Daddy, can you come see me?"
Donovan thought for a bit and figured he was almost back to Maple Valley anyway, so he decided to go see Jake.
There were another voice on the phone.
"Jake, who are you calling?" Cynthia asked nearby.
"My Daddy," Jake said.
"Which Daddy?" Cynthia seemed a bit puzzled.
"The Daddy who took me to the hospital."
"Jake, that's not your Daddy," Cynthia said.
"But I want him to be my Daddy."
On the phone, Cynthia's voice came through. "Donovan, I was prepping lessons just now, and Jake took my phone. I didn't know. Don't take it seriously. You go ahead with your work." Cynthia's voice sounded apologetic.
"I'm not busy. I'm almost back to Maple Valley. I'll come see him," Donovan said.
"When? Are you staying for dinner?" Cynthia asked.
"Mom, let Daddy stay for dinner. Let Daddy stay for dinner," Jake cried and pleaded with Cynthia.
Cynthia seemed to give in to Jake. "Alright, alright, Mom will go buy groceries."
Then, she apologized to Donovan, "For Jake's sake, please stay for dinner."
"Okay."
