Chapter 491 How Much Do You Want?

Donovan hustled Jake downstairs. If it had been just Cynthia, she would've struggled.

Watching Donovan effortlessly place Jake into his car, Cynthia's mind drifted. It felt like she was back in her teenage years, with the mature Donovan by her side. His presence gave her a huge sense of security, especially now, as he held Jake. Cynthia felt like she and Donovan had reconnected more than ever.

Donovan had Cynthia sit in the back seat to look after Jake. He started the car and called the director of the hopspital they were heading, letting him know Jake was sick and needed to be admitted. The director agreed right away.

Cynthia thought, 'Donovan is truly amazing, so organized and well-connected.'

A guy like Donovan was admired by most women, and Cynthia was no exception.

"Didn't Chloe come?" Cynthia asked after Donovan hung up the phone.

"She's at home working on her thesis."

Cynthia nodded. "Chloe is really impressive. With a few more papers, she could become a professor. She can't afford to be distracted now, especially with her projects. Her future is limitless."

For some reason, Donovan felt both proud and irritated by Cynthia's words. Proud because Chloe was indeed impressive; irritated because all of this came at the cost of her three-year absence.

"Do you need to borrow money?" Donovan asked Cynthia.

There was still some distance from Pearl Peak University to the hospital. Jake was asleep with a high fever, and Cynthia gently patted him as they found a topic to chat about.

Hearing Donovan's question, Cynthia snapped back to reality. "Yes, I didn't know how to bring it up, so I asked Chloe to do it. The house is a special offer from the school, not expensive, but it requires full payment. It's a bit difficult for me to cover it alone."

"How much do you need?"

Cynthia roughly calculated in her mind. "I need about $200,000. The house costs $250,000, and I only have $50,000, so..."

"What's your account number?" Donovan asked straightforwardly.

Actually, Cynthia had her card in her bag, but to find another excuse to see Donovan, she said, "My card is at home. I need to go back and check. Aren't you at the school recently? I'll give it to you once I find it."

Donovan didn't think much of it and simply said, "Alright."

At the hospital, Donovan had Cynthia take Jake while he went downstairs to pay and get the medicine. While the doctor drew blood for Jake and took his temperature, Cynthia kept thinking about Donovan.

Jake was admitted to a private room, and Donovan stayed with him, worried that Cynthia couldn't handle it alone. Soon, it was dinner time, and Donovan received a WhatsApp message from Chloe: [Is Jake feeling better? What about your dinner?]

Donovan: [He's getting an IV. You can bring it.]

Chloe didn't reply.

"Donovan, what are you having for dinner?" Cynthia asked.

"Chloe is bringing it."

Cynthia responded with a delayed nod.

Knowing Chloe was coming, Cynthia felt a slight sense of displeasure. This was something she had never felt before. Although she had always used Chloe, their relationship had been good. She never saw Chloe as an enemy and had never done anything to wrong her.

In Cynthia's view, she depended on Chloe and wasn't in a position to be her enemy.
