Chapter 493 Chloe's Cooking
"I haven't been cooking much lately. Give it a shot and see if it's any good," Chloe said, trying to keep it cool with Cynthia around. Yet, Cynthia felt awkward and out of place.
"Everything's just okay, except for the fish," Donovan commented.
Chloe kept quiet, thinking, 'I bought the fish; I made everything else. Donovan knows this and is just messing with me to make me look bad.'
Chloe ignored him and sat by the bed, watching Jake.
The fish was from the cafeteria, where Cynthia always ate, so she knew. "Quit teasing Chloe. Look, she's blushing."
It was almost December, and it got dark early. Chloe sat by the window, her face a luminescent contrast to the velvety darkness outside. Her long eyelashes fluttered, and her eyes had this innocent, almost naive look, belieing the responsibilities of motherhood she already shouldered.
Feeling Donovan and Cynthia's teasing, Chloe felt a bit hurt. "You two are really good at making people feel bad."
Donovan and Cynthia exchanged a look, and it was this look that made Cynthia feel even more drawn to Donovan.
Cynthia knew it was more for Chloe because she saw his gaze shift back to her afterward. So today, whether it was Cynthia or someone else sitting here, he would have exchanged that look. Cynthia suddenly felt very jealous of Chloe.
"How are you getting home later? Coming with us?" Donovan asked Chloe.
Chloe thought for a moment and asked, "How much longer until Jake finishes his injection?"
"Three hours?" Donovan glanced at Cynthia for confirmation. Cynthia nodded.
"I have to get up early tomorrow, so I won't go with you. Besides, don't you have to carry Jake upstairs when you get home? The family building doesn't have an elevator, and Cynthia can't carry him up alone. You guys hurry up and eat. I'll wash the food containers after you're done," Chloe said.
Just then, Chloe got a WhatsApp message: [Chloe, are you free? I'm in Pearl Peak City.]
Chloe stared at the message for a long time, feeling a tremor in her heart. She pretended not to care and didn't reply.
After Donovan and Cynthia finished eating, she washed the food containers and was about to leave when Donovan asked, "Want me to give you a ride home?"
"No need. I'll just grab a cab. You take Cynthia and Jake home. I need to get back now," Chloe said, turning to leave.
"Don't forget to message me when you get home," Donovan reminded her.
After leaving the hospital and getting into a cab, Chloe replied to Derek on WhatsApp.
Chloe: [When did you get to Pearl Peak City? Where are you now? I'll come find you.]
Derek: [I'm at the Pearl Peak Hotel for a conference. Come over, I have some things to show you.]
Chloe: [Okay, on my way.]
Chloe asked the driver to change direction and head to the Pearl Peak Hotel.
Pearl Peak Hotel was pretty far from Pearl Peak University, almost at opposite ends of the city. When Chloe got to the hotel lobby, she messaged Derek on WhatsApp: [I'm here. Are you in your room?]
Derek: [I just checked. The hotel is quite far from your school. Don't go back tonight. Get a room downstairs, either next to or across from 2036, and go to school directly from here tomorrow.]
Chloe: [Got it.]
Following Derek's instructions, Chloe got a room at the front desk, right across from Derek's room.
