Chapter 659 Fending Off Some Disasters
After Donovan headed upstairs, he flopped down next to Chloe. "Not happy about this?"
Chloe rolled over. "You brought him here. Do I even get a say?"
After a pause, she added, "This kid, he's probably your secret love child, right?"
"That's ridiculous!" Donovan snapped. "Stop jumping to conclusions."
"Well, I'm not having another kid. You've already got a second one," Chloe huffed, turning her back on him.
Donovan knelt on the bed and gently lifted her. "Is your kid with Jake the same?"
"How is it not? Aren't they both your kids?" Chloe was fuming. Jake's presence made her super uncomfortable. Plus, people would gossip that Jake was Donovan's illegitimate son. The thought of her man having a kid with another woman was humiliating.
"Forget it, I'm done talking," Donovan said, seeing Chloe's stubborn expression.
What Donovan wanted to say was: He had made too many enemies in his life. Who knows when one might pop up? Having Jake around could protect him from some of that. Like Janet. When she gets out of prison, she'll definitely be gunning for him. But if Jake's in the picture, it might soften the blow. He learned this from James and had to be ready.
But if he told Chloe, she'd feel bad for Jake. Even though she didn't like Jake being treated like her own kid, deep down, she believed everyone should be treated equally. Donovan shouldn't use a kid as a shield.
He worried Chloe would call him heartless, so he kept quiet.
Chloe pouted and stopped talking.
Not only did Chloe think Jake was Donovan's love child, but others did too. She really couldn't understand why he adopted this kid!
The next day at a meeting, Mario joked, "Donovan, I heard you adopted a kid. Is he your secret son?"
Mario was just kidding, but if he thought that way, others might too. Mario wasn't from Aurora Isle, so he didn't hold back.
Chloe felt really uncomfortable hearing that.
"Don't be ridiculous. Jake was being abused by his adoptive parents. I had no choice," Donovan explained, glancing at Chloe. She pretended not to hear and kept her head down, taking notes.
That morning, while Chloe was putting on makeup, she noticed one of her pearl earrings was missing. It was an expensive pair, but she didn't worry too much, thinking it had just fallen somewhere. She had plenty of jewelry, most of it gifts from Donovan, so she just put on another pair.
A few days later, Donovan got the kids enrolled in kindergarten.
They both went to an international school. Tuition was over $200,000 a year per kid, so for two, it was over $400,000.
When Jake first arrived at the Blake Mansion, he thought it was way better than Cynthia's place. Plus, his new mom and dad were really nice to him. He started calling Chloe "Mom," though it felt awkward, and Chloe's responses were awkward too. But at least they were building a relationship.
Jake was now the second son of the Blake family.
However, Donovan still hadn't changed his last name.
