Chapter 44 Stand Here

Chloe had been tending to Samuel when Paisley interjected, "You must be tired. Let me take over." Without much thought, Chloe stood up and stepped aside just as Donovan walked in. Paisley couldn't have timed her intervention better.

Seeing Donovan reminded Chloe of the discomfort she'd felt when they were buying the computer. He glanced at Samuel, adjusted the IV drip to a slower rate, and then sharply told Chloe, "Step outside with me for a moment."

Left with no choice, Chloe followed him into the hallway, away from Samuel's bedroom. Donovan motioned for her to stand up against the wall. "Why are you letting her do this kind of work?" he questioned sternly.

Chloe bristled inwardly, ‘Why shouldn't she do such work?’ Coupled with her lingering resentment over the computer incident, Chloe's tone came off rather sharp when she retorted, "When are we getting divorced?" Clearly, her question had caught Donovan off-guard.

"Are you really looking forward to the divorce?" He inquired, furrowing his brows.

"Paisley has already come back, and I have moved out of the Blake family home. I think a divorce is just a matter of time. I just want to know a date so I can prepare mentally," Chloe said, tilting her head up but not looking at Donovan.

"Oh, really? And do you suppose I had no reason to ask you to leave the Blake household? Or maybe you want to come back for the money?" Donovan's tone was thick with sarcasm. "Oh, that’s right, you've bought your computer now, you're not short on cash." Donovan continued.
"Is this all because of Andrew Price? He's gone. What are you still holding onto? And you read my diary. Why don't you admit it? That diary is private. I could sue you for that!" Chloe retorted sulkily.

"Go ahead and sue!" Donovan threatened. Chloe knew her petty threats didn't intimidate Donovan one bit. He probably took them as a joke. She huffed and turned her head away.

"Stand right there!" Donovan demanded.

"When are we getting a divorce?" Chloe asked again.

"Just enjoy being Mrs. Blake!" And with that, Donovan entered Samuel's hospital room.

It seemed she would have to endure being Mrs. Blake for a while longer. She probably was stuck until Samuel passed away, and then he might marry Paisley.

"Jerk!" Chloe muttered under her breath after Donovan had walked away.

To her surprise, Donovan stopped dead in his tracks and then turned back.

"What did you say?" he asked, his eyebrows slightly drawn together.

Her head sunk even lower, "Nothing. You look great."

Donovan knew she hadn't really complimented him, but he clearly wasn't in the mood to argue and left her there.

After entering the hospital room, he found Samuel awake. "Where’s Chloe? Did she come back?"

"She's outside," Donovan replied.

"Call her in," Samuel said eagerly, gesturing with his hand.

"I'll get her," said Paisley, walking out.

When Paisley saw Chloe standing against the wall, she sneered. "He really treats you like an employee, doesn't he? Get moving. Samuel is calling for you."

Chloe felt an overwhelming sense of injustice, especially since it was Paisley who delivered the summons, intensifying the feeling of being excluded.
Samuel's face broke into a smile when he saw Chloe, "Chloe, back from your business trip? Planning to stick around this time?"

Chloe hesitated to respond, casting a sidelong glance at Donovan. "Yeah, I’m back for good." She responded.

"Whoa, you guys are newlyweds! Donovan, that's not cool." Paisley clapped Donovan on the shoulder with a familiarity.

"I’ve got an appearance this afternoon. need to head out." Paisley stood there with a picture of elegance, requesting, "I didn't drive. Donovan, aren't you going to see me off?" She acted as if Chloe wasn't even there.

Out of gentlemanly courtesy, and since it's tough to hail a cab from the hillside villa, Donovan went out with Paisley.
