Chapter 439 They Really Are a Perfect Match
Jeffery completely considered Donovan as part of his family. In his mind, Donovan was knowledgeable and experienced, and right now, he was asking Chloe about her past on Jeffery's behalf.
"I had a relationship once in college," Chloe answered.
"Really? What happened later? Why didn't you stay together?"
"Later, he went to teach. He died saving a child from drowning," Chloe said.
"He was a good young man. What about after that? Did you date anyone else?" Donovan pressed on, like an interviewer deeply interested in a candidate.
"After that..." Chloe thought momentarily. "No."
Donovan's hand trembled slightly as he stubbed out his cigarette.
"It seems Ms. Baker still prefers college romances. How old are you, Jeffery?" Donovan turned to look at Jeffery.
"Me?" Jeffery glanced at Chloe with embarrassment, his eyes full of love and guilt. "I'm twenty-three."
"You're thirteen years younger than me. You should call me uncle," Donovan seemed to mock himself.
"No way," Jeffery said apologetically, feeling his age was a disadvantage. He thought Chloe might not like it.
If someone else had asked, Jeffery would have said, "None of your business."
However, things were different as the person asking was Donovan.
Jeffery was always obedient in front of Donovan.
Chloe kept her head down, fiddling with her fingers.
Every word Donovan said sounded like concern to Jeffery.
But to her, every word was sarcastic.
"Where is Ms. Baker from?" Donovan asked again.
"I'm from Maple Valley. I went to college there."
"I'm from Maple Valley too." Jeffery smiled again, bright and cheerful.
"Both of you are from Maple Valley and met in Pearl Peak City. Isn't that a coincidence?" Donovan seemed to joke.
However, only he knew what he really thought.
"I'm from Pearl Peak City and later went to Maple Valley; Ms. Baker is from Maple Valley and came to Pearl Peak City. Life's opportunities are unpredictable." Donovan squinted, staring intently at Chloe. "What brought Ms. Baker to Pearl Peak City?"
"Oh, the president of the Stellar Corp, who had visited Emerald Isle, invited me. I hadn't decided to come, but someone I knew who teaches at Pearl Peak City University encouraged me to come," Chloe answered properly.
"Is that so?" Donovan said. "I thought you came for certain people or things."
"No," Chloe said.
"My fault." Donovan seemed to mock himself.
"Oh, speaking of the Stellar Corp, my mentor Mr. Reynolds introduced me to a part-time job as an assistant there," Jeffery said excitedly.
Donovan said, "Oscar?"
"Yes, Mr. Blake. Do you know him?"
"Yes, he was my grandfather's student."
"You're going to be an assistant at the Stellar Corp? I'm an independent director there," Chloe said to Jeffery, surprised.
"I know. Mr. Reynolds knows too." Jeffery turned to Chloe.
"It seems your relationship is well-known among your classmates and even supported by your teachers." Donovan raised his hands and slowly clapped them together, producing a slow and heavy sound. "A perfect match!"
Chloe knew his sarcasm was top-notch.
But Jeffery thought Donovan was sincere.
"Let's eat. I'm hungry," Francis said, feeling aggrieved.
He had wanted Chloe to date Donovan, but unfortunately, it was too late.
After dinner, Chloe excused herself, saying she had a headache, and left first.
Jeffery didn't stop her; instead, he stayed behind to talk to Donovan.
"Mr. Blake, can you not tell my Mom about me pursuing Chloe? Just say she's an ordinary student," Jeffery said.
"Why?" Donovan asked Jeffery slowly in the shadow of the Willowbrook Restaurant entrance.
"Chloe isn't much older, but she's still older than me. And she's a teacher. I'm afraid my mom will scold me," Jeffery, having completely considered Donovan as family, spoke sincerely.
"You're afraid your Mom won't approve?" Donovan asked understandingly.
"Yes."
"I won't say anything. One day, you'll tell her yourself." Donovan patted Jeffery's shoulder.
"Okay." Donovan and Jeffery parted ways at the restaurant entrance.
