Chapter 53 Aren't You Jealous?
Upon returning home, Chloe said, "I'm not hungry tonight. I'll pass on dinner."
Her grandfather was concerned about Chloe, "Why are you not eating? Are you trying to lose weight?"
"It's not that, Samuel. I had something to eat at the office earlier."
"Don't just go on a diet willy-nilly. Your health is the most important thing," he advised Chloe with sincere concern.
After chatting a bit more with Samuel, Chloe went upstairs.
Later that evening, around eight o'clock, Chloe experienced a terrible stomachache.
She was sweating profusely, with her stomach in spasms, curled up on the bed.
Donovan came up and saw Chloe in this condition, his brow furrowing slightly, "Do you have a fever?"
"It doesn't seem so," stammered Chloe, shivering and covered in cold sweat.
Observing Donovan's expression, she always felt she couldn't quite read his emotions. Seizing the opportunity, she grabbed Donovan's wrists, "Have I offended you in some way? I can never get a grasp on your moods."
Donovan looked at her and said, "With the way things are now, you're talking about this?"
His stern gaze silenced Chloe.
"Let's go to the hospital." After saying this, Donovan lifted Chloe from the bed in his arms and carried her downstairs.
They reached the nearest private hospital, and Donovan carried Chloe inside.
Chloe, standing about five foot seven and weighing around a hundred and some pounds, noticed the fine sweat on Donovan's brow as he set her down.
At that moment, Chloe felt his eyes seemed even more endearing.
"You don't have to carry me, it's not a serious illness, I can walk on my own," insisted Chloe, even as her stomachache intensified. She had seen worse ailments, so to her, this stomach pain didn't seem like a big deal.
"What counts as a serious illness?" Donovan retorted.
Chloe was at a loss for words.
The doctor promptly gave Chloe a thorough check-up and diagnosed her with gastritis.
Chloe had always been a fan of spicy foods. Never turning down anything fiery. The cold leftovers she ate earlier that afternoon had triggered her gastritis.
Chloe was quickly settled into a private room.
Donovan stayed by her side, watching over her.
Chloe felt quite guilty.
"What cold thing did you eat?" Donovan questioned Chloe.
Chloe then explained everything that happened that day.
Recalling the office gossip, Chloe aimed to clarify herself, "I didn't mean to frame Paisley. I wasn't faking illness to set her up. The food she brought you was fine. it's just that the office microwave was broken, so I had no choice but to eat the food cold."
By the end, Chloe's voice lowered as if recognizing she had done something wrong.
"Is it my fault? Have I caused you such trouble?" Donovan asked her, frowning.
"Oh, I didn't mean that at all. Whatever you say or do is right," Chloe said with wide eyes and a pale face, solemnly swearing to Donovan.
"Aren't you jealous?" Donovan asked her.
"I don't have any right to be jealous," Chloe said sadly, her eyes downcast.
Donovan stopped talking to Chloe and called the logistics department to have the finance department's microwave replaced.
Then, he called James Turner to arrange time off for Chloe without stating the reason.
There was no need to.
"Do I have to stay in the hospital for a few days?" Chloe asked Donovan.
"Follow the doctor's orders. You'll get an IV for three days."
"Three days? With the weekend coming up, that makes it longer," Chloe murmured, her head bowed.
Donovan was speechless.
The next day, the whole company knew about Chloe's leave because the logistics department replaced the finance department's microwave.
The microwave had been broken for a while, and no one had seen to it, but as soon as Chloe fell ill, it was fixed.
It seemed Chloe's influence was quite strong indeed.
"Look, just yesterday Paisley brought food for the company, and everyone was fine, except for Chloe, who got sick with a stomachache. It's pretty obvious who Chloe is targeting with her cunning plan," the company buzzed with such discussions.
Gossip spread like wildfire throughout the company about Paisley's infatuation with Mr. Blake and how Chloe must have been sly enough to survive in the business world. "Just look at that. The moment she falls ill, all of Paisley's hard work is erased," they whispered with ill-concealed jealousy. When Sofia caught wind of the rumors, she defended Chloe, "Stop making up stories. Chloe's not like that." The chatter ceased in her presence, as no one wanted to cross Chloe, given her influence over Mr. Blake since she had regained his favor.
Behind closed doors, they remained silent, knowing any further talk might backfire on them.
