Chapter 400 The Only One You'll Miss

"Ms. Carter? I got your number from Jacob. I heard you have a heart condition, and having a child could be dangerous. You don't need to risk your life for me. I'm out! You can have his child." It was Chloe's voice.

"Are you Mrs. Blake? This is breaking up another marriage, which is very unethical," Janet pretended to decline. She knew the more she pretended, the guiltier Chloe would feel.

"We've been divorced for a long time," Chloe said and hung up.

"Who was that?" Pamela asked Janet.

"Oh, it was Chloe. She wants me to have Donovan's child," Janet said. "I used Jacob to tell her I'm pregnant. She probably won't doubt it."

Pamela laughed heartily, her laughter echoing through the walls. She laughed with a sense of triumph, as if she had finally avenged a great wrong.

"She believed it. She's heartbroken and has given up!" Pamela laughed so hard she almost cried. "I did it!"

When Chloe got home, it was already eight o'clock. She was carrying a bunch of clothes.

She still had some doubts about Janet's pregnancy, but the more people talked about it, the more she began to believe it was true. And Jacob's fervent insistence that Janet was definitely pregnant with Donovan's child—his face twisted with rage as if he wanted to kill Donovan—only fueled her confusion.

Chloe suddenly felt very tired. She didn't want to keep entangling herself in this. She wanted to study.

When she got home, Gordon and Clara were sitting on the couch.

Seeing Gordon's serene demeanor reminded Chloe of Donovan's police station testimony. Amelia had long been laid to rest, yet Gordon was still here, sitting comfortably.

When she entered the bedroom, Donovan was already waiting for her.

"Why are you back so late?" Donovan asked.

"You burned all my clothes, so I went to buy a few new ones," Chloe said calmly.

Donovan felt that her tone and expression were a bit off. "What's wrong?" he asked.

"Nothing. I was just thinking about leaving tomorrow. I'm going to leave Francis, and it makes me sad," Chloe said.

"Is Francis the only one you'll miss?"

Chloe thought for a moment. "I'll miss you too."

"I bought you some things to take with you tomorrow. Look at the place you're renting; it's shabby." Donovan gestured, and Chloe looked at the table, which was filled with things like an electric toothbrush, face wash, clothes, and even sanitary pads.

"Okay," Chloe said.

"If you have any problems, call me promptly."

"Okay."

"I'll tell you if I think of anything else."

"Okay."

Donovan said a lot, suddenly becoming like a caring husband. Chloe could only respond with "Okay."

"When you get to Verdania, rent a better place. The one you have now is too small. I gave you so much money. Who are you saving it for?" Donovan's subtext seemed to be that Chloe rented such a small place that he wouldn't be comfortable staying there.

"Okay," Chloe answered good-naturedly.

Having gotten the answer he wanted, Donovan didn't say anything more. That night, he made love to Chloe for a long time, leaving her body covered in bruises, but she didn't make a sound.

Despite having hardly slept, Chloe got up early the next morning. She packed her luggage and went to hold Francis. Though Chloe was deeply reluctant to leave Francis, her face betrayed no emotion—she was resolute.

At this moment, no one knew what was truly going on inside her mind.

Donovan didn't go to the airport to see Chloe off; he sent Susan instead. He didn't want to be too sad; the farewell scene was too heartbreaking.

Susan had also heard about Pamela framing Chloe. "Mrs. Blake, I never thought Pamela could be such a person. My impression of her has completely changed. I won't like her anymore!" Susan was quite angry. "How long will you be in Verdania?"

"Well, it depends. Maybe I'll come back twice a month," Chloe said, keeping her gaze fixed on the window, her mood seemingly indifferent.

Susan assumed Chloe was just upset about her trip abroad and didn't think much of it.

Chloe walked through customs without looking back and headed to Verdania.

Susan reported the situation to Donovan. "Mr. Blake, Mrs. Blake has gone through customs," Susan said.

"What did she say?" Donovan couldn't muster any energy.

"Oh, she didn't say much. She went through customs without looking back."

Donovan was silent for a moment, then hung up.
