Chapter 28 Gentle Treatment
Donovan found Chloe on the second floor in his study.
She was flipping through a Latin novel.
"I came to talk about something," Donovan knocked on the door of the study.
Chloe was startled. She thought Donovan wanted to discuss what happened that morning.
Donovan headed toward his bedroom.
With trepidation, Chloe followed.
After closing the bedroom door, Chloe surveyed his room, whose size and lavishness exceeded her imagination. It could have passed for another deluxe house.
Donovan was casually changing his clothes, inadvertently revealing his well-defined abs, making Chloe tense.
She quickly turned her head away.
Donovan smirked, a sly twist to his smile, "What's the matter? Can't look? Or are you playing coy? We've slept together and touched each other, and now you start acting modest?"
Donovan's words were a clear jab at Chloe's involvement in their sexual relationship, causing her to blush.
He continued, now wearing a casual gray shirt and buttoning it up, "You're going to move in and live with me."
"Ah?" Chloe was taken aback.
Although Chloe had entertained the thought of moving in, she was still surprised when Donovan suggested it.
"In Samuel's eyes, we are husband and wife. What does it look like if you live outside every day? Are you making a cuckold of me, or are we separating? I don't want to worry Samuel."
Chloe understood his point. After all, five million dollars was no small sum, but that thought was quickly overshadowed by her recollection of Andrew Price's wishes, money she couldn't claim at the moment.
When she would receive, it remained uncertain.
With determination, she licked her lips and said, "It's going to cost you more."
Donovan's fingers paused on his shirt buttons, "How much more? Ten thousand a night?"
Chloe did some quick mental math. If a computer costs four thousand dollars, she would need eight hundred thousand dollars for two hundred computers - five hundred thousand wouldn't be enough.
With resolve, she countered, "Ten thousand a night is too slow. One million, transferred immediately, and I'll move in tonight."
Donovan's shirt still had the top two buttons undone, which he did not bother to fasten, leaving his chest partly exposed. He walked over to Chloe, examining the intern, who was proving to be less controllable than he had anticipated.
"Learning to bargain, aren't you?" His gaze was sharp and probing.
Chloe stood her ground, "Living together every day, it's bound to be mentally exhausting, trying not to slip up."
"So if I don't pay, you'll quit?" Donovan's tone remained cold.
"That's right. After all, that's your grandfather. To me, he is a stranger," Chloe replied firmly.
Last Thursday, every word she had said struck home. Now, with Samuel here, she picked her battles and aimed high, leaving Donovan no room to haggle.
It was the first time Chloe had raised her price so sharply - by a million dollars in one go!
"Aren't you afraid I'll divorce you?" Donovan eyed Chloe's flushed face.
"Samuel likes me a lot. If you divorce me, he will definitely be angry with you," a sly twinkle passed through Chloe's eyes.
"So you think you've got me cornered, or do you think I'm foolish and rich enough to be duped?"
"No, I am worth more than the price," Chloe said with a brazen face.
Donovan took a deep breath, his face turning ashen as he conceded the million dollars and then growled, "Sleep here tonight, and move your stuff over tomorrow without letting Samuel see."
Chloe sighed in relief. The two hundred computers were hers!
At dinner that night, Chloe and Samuel had a great time chatting – she was indeed his bundle of joy.
Samuel even said, "With Chloe here, I could live many more years."
"To a long and happy life," Chloe said with a smile.
Glancing over, Chloe caught Donovan's gaze fixed on her. He was probably thinking: "Live a long life, with decades to go - that means never getting a divorce."
The next day, Chloe took advantage of the noon break to return to her dorm and pack her things. She found herself in a difficult spot upon seeing Andrew Price's diary. In the end, she locked the diary in her suitcase. Not that Donovan had any interest in her things, but even if he did, he wouldn't know the combination to her suitcase. That afternoon, she rode home in Donovan's car, and while Samuel wasn't looking, she carried her suitcase upstairs and placed it in a discreet corner of the balcony after unpacking her clothes.
