Chapter 139 I'm Sorry, I Can't Assist with That Request
"Really?" Jacob stood up from his chair and moved closer to Donovan. "Are you serious?"
"Absolutely," Donovan replied.
"Are you willing to put it in writing?" Jacob was concerned about losing this opportunity.
"No need for a contract. I'll have my assistant bring the keys," Donovan said before stepping out to make a call.
Jacob was taken aback. How did Donovan change his mind so quickly?
Donovan returned and announced, "My assistant will bring the keys shortly."
Jacob was surprised at how easily he had gained an advantage.
Amelia, feeling uneasy, whispered to Donovan, "You don't have to do this."
"It's not excessive," Donovan replied.
Chloe wondered what Donovan was thinking. Was he trying to impress Amelia by being a good son-in-law? But the cost was too high—two houses in Maple Valley, worth millions.
"Please think it over," Chloe said, tugging at Donovan's sleeve.
Jacob, eager to please, moved a chair behind Donovan and stood by his side.
"Let Mom rest," Donovan said, taking a seat.
Chloe knew Jacob was waiting for Donovan's assistant. As long as the benefits weren't secured, Jacob wouldn't give up.
Amelia and Chloe chatted for a while. Chloe sensed that Amelia had something on her mind, probably because of Donovan's "gift."
Soon, Donovan's assistant arrived with the keys.
"Mr. Blake, here are the keys to the two houses," the assistant said.
"Two houses?" Jacob's face showed his lack of exposure. "Those are..." They were famous luxury homes in Maple Valley.
"If you need anything, just ask Chloe. I have nothing," Jacob reiterated to Donovan.
"Can you leave now?" Donovan didn't want to continue the conversation with Jacob.
Jacob examined the keys and said, "Donovan, let's talk. I can help you in the future, not Brayden." Jacob's expression changed rapidly, and Chloe felt embarrassed.
After Amelia finished reading, Donovan and Chloe left together.
"What do you want me to do?" Chloe's voice trembled with unease. She knew that there were no benefits without effort, and she had to work hard to gain them.
"I haven't figured it out yet. I'll let you know when I do," Donovan's voice remained cold.
Chloe felt that it would be the time for her to face difficulties when he figured it out.
"You didn't have to do it today."
Donovan didn't answer; his phone rang, and it was the HR director, Winslow. Winslow talked about posting a job advertisement on the website for a finance director and went over the detailed requirements with Donovan.
Donovan responded a few times and finally said, "You decide, and I'll handle the final interview."
"So, will you be handling the final interview for the finance director?" Chloe asked Donovan after he hung up.
"Yes. The finance director is a senior position, and I need to be involved."
Chloe thought that it would be difficult for Ann to be selected. After all, she was previously associated with Brayden. Donovan despised Brayden, so he might not give her a chance. But then again, Ann was indeed talented. Was there a possibility for her to be selected?
***
Monday evening.
When Donovan returned home, he brought three resumes. Th three individuals had been handpicked by the HR department from hundreds of resumes. They had already conducted interviews throughout the day and preliminarily selected these three as suitable candidates, leaving the final decision to Donovan.
Winslow from the HR department called Donovan.
"Mr. Blake, among these three candidates, there's one named Ann. She used to work at South Central Accounting Firm and is very skilled. One of the top ten accountants in Maple Valley. But there's an issue. Our job posting was on Saturday, but her resume was sent to the HR department's email on Friday. So, what do you think?"
Donovan frowned, "I'll take a look."
If that was the case, it could only mean that Ann knew in advance about James being taken away by the prosecutor's office.
Although it wasn't a private matter, Ann seemed to know about it a bit too timely.
Chloe walked over and saw Ann's resume at a glance.
"She got through?" Chloe's eyes lit up as she asked Donovan.
Donovan looked at Chloe with a deep gaze, "Yes."
"Can she be selected?"
"Not necessarily. Did you tell her about James being arrested?" Donovan slowly raised his head to scrutinize Chloe.
Chloe thought for a moment, "No, the last time I saw her was when we went to eat together, and you were there too. James hadn't been arrested at that time. Is there a problem? Could it be..."
Chloe remembered that on the day she went to see Amelia, she mentioned to her mother the reason behind Donovan’s absence. Brayden might have heard it and asked Ann to submit her resume.
"Could it be what?" Donovan stared at Chloe.
It was Brayden again! Chloe was afraid of making Donovan unhappy, so she didn't say anything. "It's nothing. Maybe I'm wrong," Chloe said.
However, Donovan had already guessed from Chloe's expression that she might have told Brayden.
Donovan took out Ann's resume and tore it up.
Chloe remained silent, afraid that her words would anger him!
