Chapter 464 In Short, It's Not His Child

Donovan went to the police station to see Janet.

Janet was dressed in prison garb, devoid of makeup, looking frail and pale.

A young girl like her seemed out of place in this environment.

"Whose child is Jake?" Donovan asked her.

The police had roughly asked this question during the interrogation. Janet had said Jake was hers, that she had him as someone’s mistress, but she refused to say who Jake's father was.

Paisley was assigned to help Donovan deliver something to Janet. They got into an argument that escalated into a heated confrontation. Hence, her act of killing was accidental.

The police suspected that Jake might be Donovan's child, so they called Donovan to come in for a paternity test. However, the results revealed that he was not.

Donovan said the reason he asked Paisley to send the gifts to Jake was that he knew it wasn't easy for Janet to take care of Jake alone. Also, he mentioned that Janet had visited him once before.

"You are Jake's father," Janet insisted.

Donovan snorted coldly. "You still refuse to say the truth? Paisley is still unconscious and hasn't woken up yet, you know?“

Hearing his words, Janet's expression changed slightly, her lips trembled, but in the end, she didn't say a word.

"If she dies, you'll be charged with intentional homicide and might never get out of prison. Jake might be sent to an orphanage, where he would be bullied, beaten, and scolded. With a mother like you, he might also become a murderer in the future. If you tell me who Jake's father is, I might be able to think of a way to help you."

Janet's face showed a slight change, and she thought that if Paisley didn't die, Jake would suffer even more at her hands in the future.

"Will you raise Jake for me?" Janet asked.

Donovan laughed again. "Think it over before you speak."

"My only request is for you to raise Jake for me. If you don't, he will be manipulated by bad people," Janet said.

"Bad people? Who do you mean?" Donovan asked.

Janet's face was etched with stubbornness . Lowering herself to work for Pamela just for money had already been demeaning, but now, committing murder made her mistakes even more profound.

"No one. Or you could find a good family to take Jake," she said, her voice strained with the weight of her decision.

"I'll have to think about it," Donovan replied, his tone noncommittal.

"Who do you have in mind?" she asked.

"That's none of your concern."

Janet seemed determined not to tell Donovan, but seeing that she would be in prison for the rest of her life and would soon lose control over Jake, if Donovan was sincere, finding a good family wouldn't be a bad idea. It was better than sending Jake to an orphanage.

After thinking for a moment, Janet said, "Jake is Elbert's child. After he was diagnosed with uremia, his girlfriend was found to be pregnant. She wanted to have an abortion, but I gave her some money to keep the baby. He is the only heir of the Carter family."

"Where did you get the money?" Donovan questioned.

"Do you need to know that too?" Janet said stubbornly.

Donovan stood up to leave.

"Mr. Blake, will you keep your word?" Janet asked hopefully.

"When I find a suitable family to raise Jake, I'll let you know," came his curt response.

"Can't you raise him?"

"Are you dreaming?" Donovan seethed.

With that, Donovan left.

The reason Donovan agreed to help Janet find a family to raise Jake was that Janet's mistake wouldn't warrant decades in prison; she hadn't done anything wrong.

Now, he finally knew whose child Jake was. In any case, Jake wasn't his.
