Chapter 30 Greed

When the police arrived, Ethan was shoving Chloe around. Both Chloe and Ethan were taken away by the officers. Brayden followed in his car but could only pace outside the police station. The sky grew dark, and rain began to fall, increasing Brayden's anxiety.

Eventually, the police asked for Chloe's friends or family to post bail. Fearing that Donovan would find out and knowing that they only had a contractual relationship without any moral obligations on his part, Chloe dared not call him. Instead, she called Jacob.

"You want money? No money here, but maybe a life," Jacob said before hanging up. After the drugging incident involving Chloe, Jacob had been thoroughly chewed out by Brayden, almost losing his job over it. With the lingering resentment, he was not inclined to help Chloe.

The "beep-beep" from the phone left Chloe feeling tremendously awkward, especially since it was her own brother.

Chloe harbored little hope, but how could she not turn to Jacob, the closest family she had? She couldn't bring herself to trouble Brayden either.

"Can't find anyone?" the officer asked Chloe.

"No one," replied Chloe, her voice tinged with defeat.

The police checked Chloe's social connections and discovered she was actually married to the well-known Donovan. They called him.

"A fight? Her?" Donovan sounded incredulous, but he was level-headed, "I'll be right there."

After arriving at the station, the police briefed Donovan on the incident. As the details unfolded, Donovan's expression grew stormy. Once he paid the fee, the police released Chloe.
Outside the detention center, Donovan lit up a cigarette and looked at Chloe, his gaze questioning, "Did you really not understand what being married means when you went to that workshop?"

"How much is bail? I'll pay you back. I'm sorry for the trouble," Chloe responded, her voice a mixture of guilt and defensiveness.

"Thinking of paying me back? Six thousand," Donovan said with a hint of sarcasm.

The woman who had just taken a million dollars from him a few days ago was offering to return six thousand.

Without a word, Chloe took out her phone and transferred six thousand dollars to Donovan.

Donovan didn't bother to check his phone or accept the money. It was all his money, after all. There was no point.

"Don't tell Samuel about this," Chloe pleaded.

"I can't be bothered to talk about your messes," he retorted.

Donovan walked out of the detention center's lobby. Chloe followed him with her backpack in tow. The night had fallen, and a steady, fine rain was falling.

Donovan didn't bother with an umbrella. He just walked in the rain, his hair collecting droplets like tiny pearls.

Chloe, slightly dazed, had been walking beside Donovan, but was struggling to keep up as he took long strides and gradually she fell behind. Donovan had never liked carrying an umbrella, even in the rain.

Chloe quickened her pace, holding her backpack over Donovan's head to shield him from the rain. She was much shorter than Donovan, so she had to stand on her tiptoes.

"Why do you always refuse to use an umbrella when it's raining?" Chloe asked a genuine concern in her voice. "What if you catch a cold?"

Donovan glanced at her with a slight frown. "I usually go from the underground garage to where I need to be. I don't have to walk in the rain much," he stated tersely.

"You should still have an umbrella, just in case," Chloe insisted.

Donovan remained silent.

When they reached the parking lot, Brayden rushed up to Chloe, eager to know what had happened.

Donovan's expression was stony.

Chloe felt even more awkward, especially after Donovan's earlier jibe.

"What's your relation to Chloe?" Brayden asked, noticing Donovan's indifferent expression as Chloe humbly held the bag for him, feeling indignant.

"Didn't you tell him?" Donovan asked Chloe, his brow furrowed, turning slightly to address her.

Chloe didn't answer. She was too embarrassed, even as the rain poured down.

"Why didn't you bail her out?" Donovan directed his question to Brayden, an inscrutable look on his face.

"I didn't know what was going on inside. No one called me," Brayden admitted.

Donovan's lips curled up slightly, "But the police called me."

"So, Chloe, did you tell the cops he was a friend of yours or what?" Brayden asked nervously. "You could have said I was your friend too. I wouldn't mind the trouble."

Donovan let out a scoffing laugh, his gaze still fixed on Chloe.
Chloe's embarrassment deepened. Brayden had a bad feeling brewing in his heart. "The police found out. He's my husband," she admitted. Brayden remained silent.
