Chapter 264 Why Are You Just Crying?
Donovan, seeing Chloe's silence, walked into Chloe's bedroom.
"What do you want for lunch?" he asked Chloe.
But Chloe looked blank, her phone almost slipping from her hand.
Donovan furrowed his brow and took Chloe's phone.
Apparently, he not only read the messages in the group but also those Brayden sent to her.
"Where's your skill? Is crying all you know?" With that, Donovan walked out.
He paced in the living room on the phone, mentioning names familiar to Chloe: Gary, Green Earth Solutions Company, and many project names Chloe had received from him last time.
Chloe heard these, but they just passed by her ears, not registering.
When Donovan walked back into her room, Chloe wiped away a tear.
"You don't want me to work with him, yet you're seeking revenge for me?" Chloe's tone turned somewhat pitiful.
"That's my business. No one else will do!" Donovan replied.
Chloe didn't quite understand what he meant; her mind was in chaos, and she didn't want to understand.
"What do you want for lunch?" he asked again.
"I just had breakfast, not hungry." Chloe shook her head.
Last year, Chloe had a particularly unfortunate time, losing her mother and grandfather. She felt this year would be the same, as the new year started with a series of unfortunate events.
"Come out to eat with me." He took Chloe's hand.
"I don't want to. I'm tired." Chloe slumped onto the bed.
Her hands lay flat under her head as she stared blankly at the view outside the window.
"Tired already? Lying will make your nose grow longer," Donovan said, his tone less harsh than before.
Somehow, when Chloe heard that, her tears flowed even more fiercely.
She didn't know why tears suddenly flowed so heavily, as if her relationship with Donovan had returned to the sweet past, without Amelia's death and with Grandpa Blake still alive.
"What's wrong?" Donovan sat on the edge of her bed, stroking her hair, watching her tears flow more and more, "They won't have any projects this year."
He seemed to be soothing her, offering her candy.
"You did it?" she asked.
"Yes. I just informed the whole Maple Valley."
Chloe glanced at him, thinking, 'He's really something. He managed to spread the word throughout Maple Valley in just this short amount of time.'
"Was Ellie's matter also your doing?" she asked Donovan, "How did she become a corporate spy?"
He answered, "Can't say."
"Is it that you can't say or you don't want to say?" Chloe asked him.
He asked, "Would you like to go out to eat with me?"
Chloe was in a bad mood, feeling irritated being cooped up in her room all day. Maya wasn't around either, so she thought to herself, 'Might as well go out.'
Chloe sat in the back seat as usual, watching Maple Valley's once bustling streets, which now have fewer vehicles.
"Why are there so few people in Maple Valley all of a sudden?" Although it was New Year, in winter, the trees were bare, and with few cars and people on the road, there was no Christmas atmosphere at all.
"Everyone's gone home," Donovan said, "Want to eat?"
Chloe shook her head, "I don't want to eat; I'll watch you eat."
"Don't feel like eating?" he teased Chloe.
"I'm feeling down, have no appetite at all, very discouraged," Chloe said.
Donovan just glanced at her and didn't say anything more.
Last year, they were still a family; this year, only the two of them remained, and they went through months of resentment and anger.
Now, that resentment was gradually dissipating.
